In all 3 games this year in which Bastia has let in 3 or more goals- 2 times 4 goals, 1 time 3 goals. Van-eeeeeee did not start in any of them, and he only played 20 minutes in one game after the score was already 3-1.. So the Bastia fans who think Van-eeeeee is the source of their problem... are being wacko... Or maybe just true Froggies...
No, just going on the clear evidence. If a guy starts for you much of the year, and the most goals you let in are 2 a game... And 3 (of the handful of games) he doesn't start...you let in 4, 4, and 3 goals respectfully. You need to be looking at other parts of your team first....including an offense which is just abysmal. To single out Vanney, and hang him as 'the problem'...is ludicrous. Maybe they can do better in the position, maybe his position is one that will have to be addressed (at some point), but the evidence is that they have FAR MORE AND MUCH BIGGER PROBLEMS ELSEWHERE... Nope, don't need to watch to figure this out....
For the record, Auxerre is currently third in the league and thus in a different class than Bastia. Note also that the match was at Auxerre. Curiously, neither L'Equipe nor members on the Bastia forum rated the defenders as being god awful - for l'Equipe: 4, 4.5 (for Haas from WBA), 5 for Vanney's replacement Sauget and a 6. Both agree that the midfield sucked. With the score 1-1 at HT (according to the forum) an offensive midfielder was pulled for a fifth defender and the team lost all cohesiveness. Considering that another defender Yahia who can play on the left was suspended for this game, it looks as if Greg may have dropped well down the pecking order.
Compare the goals conceded when he plays to when he sits. He's either one helluva good luck charm, his replacement is horrible, or he's pretty good. Or some combination thereof. I know jri's a lovable nut, but he's right...it's just amazing how different their defensive record is.
