no revenge - 1-1 final scored WHITECAPS GAME REPORT Whitecaps Men 1 - Calgary Mustangs 1 Friday July 30, 2004 Swangard Stadium, Burnaby, BC (attendance: 4,853 ) Overview The Whitecaps Men saw a win against Calgary slip through their fingers as Mustangs striker Stefan Holdt scored a last-second equaliser, ending Vancouver's shutout streak at a team record 561 minutes. The game finished 1-1 after 20 minutes of overtime, as Vancouver extended their unbeaten run to six. Jason Jordan scored Vancouver's lone goal, while John Sulentic saw his penalty kick attempt saved by Calgary keeper Lutz Pfannenstiel. The Whitecaps record goes to 12-5-3 for 39 points, three points up on the 12-7-0 Portland Timbers, who make up their game in hand tomorrow in Milwaukee. Vancouver slips to third place overall as the Rochester Raging Rhinos move a point up on Vancouver after defeating the Minnesota Thunder 2-1 Friday night. Calgary's record now stands at 2-14-4 for ten points, last in the league, but the tie ends the Mustangs' seven-game losing streak. Vancouver now heads off for the first of four games on the road starting Friday August 6 in Montreal. The Whitecaps Women play their big playoff match on Saturday at Swangard in the Western Conference Championship against the Seattle Sounders, starting at 7:00pm. Win or lose, this will be the Women's last home game of the season. Game Notes In a tightly played first half, Vancouver had early chances on headers from free kicks, with Dave Morris going wide at 14' and Justin Thompson powering one right at keeper Lutz Pfannenstiel at 17'. Morris then blasted a volley just wide from in close at 20'. Calgary's best chance of the first half was a powerful 20-yard shot by team captain Geert Brusselers at 25' that curled just wide of the near post. Vancouver almost opened scoring at 53' when referee Dave Gantar awarded a penalty kick after Jason Jordan was fouled from behind by defender CJ Peszneker to the right of goal. John Sulentic took the spot kick, but Lutz Pfannenstiel dove to his right to make the big stop. Pfannenstiel also stopped a dangerous shot from Sulentic at 67'. Both teams had great chances in overtime. Jason Jordan at 96' from a very sharp angle on the left, flipped the ball past the onrushing keeper, but CJ Peszneker made a superb play to hook the ball off the goal line a split second before it went in. Then in the final minute (110') Calgary's Steffen Holdt almost scored again, but pulled his shot just wide from good position. The Whitecaps', and goalkeeper Alex Marques', shutout streak ends at 561 minutes, breaking the previous mark of 504 minutes set in 1990 by Paul Dolan and Rob Merkl. Whitecaps defender Justin Thompson left the game at 67' after a clash of heads opened up a gash above his left eye requiring seven stitches. This was the first time in nearly two years that Vancouver has failed to win a game in which Jason Jordan has scored, ending a streak of eleven wins. Carlo Corazzin came in as a substitute at 75' for his 50th career game for Vancouver. The tie eliminates Vancouver for contention for the Voyageurs cup, the fan-sponsored trophy given to the Canadian team that finishes first in over a series of eight interlocking games. Vancouver's record in the cup is 2-1-3 for 7 points. The Montreal Impact have it virtually locked up at 4-2-0 for 14 points, with Edmonton FC the only team left with a mathematical chance of catching them. Scoring Summary 60' Vanc Jason Jordan (Winston Griffiths) Griffiths fed the ball to Jordan at the edge of the box and he rifled it low inside the right post for his fourth of the season. 92'+ Calg Steffen Holdt (Nicolas Reyes) Holdt sent a 22-yard screamer into the top right corner of the net past a diving Alex Marques.

what happen to Fonseca? IMPACT TIES VANCOUVER 0-0 MONTREAL, August 6, 2004 — Playing in front of over 10,000 spectators for the first time in club history at Claude Robillard Sports Complex, Friday, the Montreal Impact played the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 0-0 draw in a match-up it dominated offensively — 15-7 in shots. The game was played before 11,019 fans, an all-time club record for an Impact home game. The old attendance record of 9,894 was set last July 14. "It was like a playoff game tonight," said Impact captain Mauro Biello. "It’s frustrating not to score the goal that would have lifted the crowd, but the positive side is that we created a lot of scoring chances against a good team with a lot of experienced players and that’s well-organized defensively." With the tie, the Impact is undefeated in its last five games (4-0-1), while the Whitecaps are now unbeaten in seven (4-0-3). All of the Impact’s last five games have resulted in a shutout. The five straight shutouts — four by Greg Sutton and one by Andrew Olivieri — are a new club record. As a team, it was Montreal’s 16th shutout of the year, also a new club record. Sutton extended the record he already holds on a personal basis by collecting his 15th shutout of the season. Vancouver goalkeeper Alexander Marques-Delgado picked up his ninth shutout in 15 starts this year. The Impact buzzed in the Whitecaps end of the field for most of the game. Eduardo Sebrango and Antonio Ribeiro saw their shots blocked by defenders in scrambles at the goal mouth, at the 15th and 34th minutes respectively, while Nevio Pizzolitto hit the post after picking up the rebound on Sebrango’s shot. Free kicks by Sandro Grande forced Marques-Delgado to come up with big saves at the 34th and 44th minute. The Montreal players kept the same pace in the second half, as Ribeiro saw his bullet deflected away by Marques-Delgado at the 62nd. Ribeiro then found Biello at the edge of the penalty area, and the captain healed the ball forward to Sebrango, who was stopped at close range by the Vancouver goalkeeper. Sutton also came up big at the 71st, as he dove to his left to stop Steve Kindel’s shot, and then at the 83rd, when he blocked a 25-yard shot from Davide Xausa. At the 13th minute of overtime, Biello and Sebrango both couldn’t find the handle right at the goal mouth. On a night where the top four teams in the Eastern Conference were playing, the Impact remained in first place, two points ahead of the Richmond Kickers, who beat the Charleston Battery 2-1 in overtime. Meanwhile, the Rochester Rhinos played the Syracuse Salty Dogs to a 1-1 draw, while the Atlanta Silverbacks lost 4-3 to the Virginia Beach Mariners. In the Western Conference, the Whitecaps are now two points behind the first-place Portland Timbers. Fred Commodore, who came into the game at the 61st, had to come out for Darko Kolic at the 75th because of a sprained ankle. The Impact’s next game will be on Saturday, August 14 at Laval University’s PEPS Stadium in Laval, against the Puerto Rico Islanders (2:00 pm, CKAC). -30- SOURCE: bcomm INFO: Stéphane Banfi 514-328-3668 (ext. 27)
what happen to Vancouver another lost Thunder Defeat Second Place Whitecaps 2-1 Castellanos Scores Game Winner in 77th Minute August 10, 2004 (Stillwater, Minn.) – The Thunder snapped a four game losing streak Tuesday night in Stillwater, defeating the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps by a 2-1 score. Midfielder Kevin Friedland led the Thunder with a goal and an assist, while David Castellanos scored the game-winner for the Thunder in the 77th minute. The win is an important one for the Thunder who reclaim third place in the Western Conference, moving past the Seattle Sounders. “It was a good win for us after a tough stretch where we lost four league matches in a row,” said Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos after the game, “To come back home and get the win against the second place team puts us closer to Vancouver in the standings and separates us more from [fifth-place] Milwaukee. It was a good result for our team and now we look forward to playing Portland. The Thunder now prepare to face the first-place Portland Timbers at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul on Saturday (August 14) at 7 p.m. The Whitecaps started Tuesday evening’s game quickly when forward Jason Jordan carried the ball deep into left side of the Thunder goal box in the 5th minute of play and lofted a ball towards the top of the box. Midfielder Johnny Sulentic cracked a first time shot from just outside goal box that went a few feet wide of the goal. The Thunder got on the board first when forward Johnny Menyongar collected the ball 25 yards from goal and played a ball into the right corner of the field for the streaking Godfrey Tenoff who played a first time ball across the mouth of the goal that snuck past the Vancouver defense and goalkeeper Alex Marques to Kevin Friedland who easily slid the ball into the far side of the goal for the 1-0 lead. It looked as though the Thunder would take that 1-0 lead into halftime when Vancouver forward Jason Jordan collected a poor Minnesota clearance with just a minute left in the half and carried the ball deep into the Thunder goal box. Jordan drew goalkeeper Joe Warren to the left side of the net and slid the ball across the goal to a wide-open Martin Nash who easily put the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at one. Vancouver out-shot the Thunder 8-3 in the first half. Jordan again created an early chance for Vancouver in the 48th minute when he stole the ball from Tenoff and took off down the left side of the field with several Thunder players racing to catch up to him. Jordan slid through the Thunder goal box and hit a low shot towards the far post that Warren was barely able to grab as he dove to his left. The Thunder’s Jeff Matteo created a great opportunity to score when he collected a Vancouver turnover and slid a ball across the goal box to a wide open Johnny Menyongar who cut back one defender and slid the ball to a streaking Tenoff who rocketed a shot past goalkeeper Marques and just over the cross bar. With just over ten minutes left in the game Friedland threaded a ball through the Vancouver defense to a sprinting David Castellanos who carried the ball about 10 yards into the goal box and hit a shot past a diving Marques to put the Thunder up 2-1. Castellanos’ goal would prove to be the game-winner. “It was a good result for our team and now we look forward to playing Portland,” said Lagos. With the win the Thunder improves to 11-8-3 (W-L-D). The Thunder’s final home game of the season takes place this Saturday (August 14) at James Griffin Stadium. The Thunder face off against the first- place Portland Timbers.
