    Leave it to Louie!

They'll have to include his Psychiatrist's bill into the negotiations, because the guy is suffering serious depre in Portugal after the split with his wife.

I hope LvG signs him up!

But the guy always seems to find the back of the net vs El Madrid, so I hope he comes nowhere near the Cuitat Condal!

    Tragicomic.

    From Team Talk:

Jardel future decision in "48 hours" ^top
Sporting Lisbon striker Mario Jardel could be on the verge of ending his Portuguese nightmare with a move to Barcelona.
Jardel stunned Sporting fans when he issued a statement last month, saying he wanted a transfer and citing "psychological problems" resulting from the break-up of his marriage as his reason for wanting to leave The Stadium of Light, where he scored more than 40 goals last season.
Jardel's problems have alerted several of Europe's top clubs, with Barcelona now set to move, according to Spanish daily Marca. The European Golden Boot winner is not a priority signing for Azulgrana boss Louis van Gaal, but he would definitely be interested if the player could be brought to the Nou Camp for a reasonable fee.
When asked about the striker's future, Jardel's agent, Jose Veiga said: "In 48 hours everything will be solved."

    But there is this...

NO WAY!!! I do not want Jardel. Not at 3 million pounds AND Geovanni. He's had a good career and done the business in the CL, but he's having personal problems right now. Furthermore, he always seems to have problems with his clubs. Now that Rivaldo is gone, we don't need that anymore. And where's he gonna play in LVG's system? I'd prefer they go and get someone else or just see how Dani does this season and wait until next summer.

I guess I'd have mixed emotions if be came to Barça. There's no denying that the man is a goal machine, but how many strikers do we need? Maybe the Barca management have been watching old Edmonton Oilers tapes from the early '80s- who cares if we let in four, Gretzky, Kurri & co. will just score six or seven.

On a related note check out the hilarious typo in the 2nd paragraph of this news piece:

I agree with you guys. I have never really had jardel that highly rated and I hope that Barca come to their senses and dont sign him.

I feel that we have seen Barca mature over the last two years in regards to player signings and that this would be a step in the wrong direction. Two years ago when Barca lost figo to madrid they then brought in a bunch of players without any real strategy behind the purchases. (this was the petit, overmars, alfonso year) Now most of these guys are gone. Last year we bought good young players, (Saviola, Rochembeck, Geovanni, Christanval) and Andersson, a CL winner who was supposed to steady our defense. This year we have also done well (Riquelme, Mendieta). Both of these players are very good signings in my opinion and will hopefully contribute greatly for many years at the Nou Camp. I think the purchase of Jardel would push us back a couple of years in terms of signings.

Unless Barca can swoop for Ronaldo (which I would love to see), I think they should leave the attacking portion of the squad alone. We really need that linchpin in the back a lot more than we need another striker.

    A better J for Barca

I'll tell the real J i'd like to see Barca in a bit. First though, I think we are fine with who we have. We have Kluivert, Saviola and Dani. I'd rather Barca went after Reyes of Sevilla or some other young prospect who can be had for a decent price and will give the club many years of service. Furthermore, I'd prefer he was a Spaniard. No offense to anyone hear from South America or who is South American, but until some sort of "footballing calender" is devised we are going to have problems. I hate it when players return to the club late, or worse they pull a Ronaldo and jet home to rehab while they are injured. Anyway, I'm getting beyond my point. I also think if we got a player like Reyes who can play more than just an out and out striker, we will be adding versatility to the squad. And about Ronaldo, FORGET IT! He's all about the money and I don't even think he'd want to come back.

I agree with Mike that at this juncture we really need to shore up the defense a bit. I would prefer a defensive signing and I'm sure you're all aware that I think Chivu is the man. I say move for him now (sell Christanval) and tie him up to a long term deal with a HUGE buyout clause.

Now to my J signing. Barca should really go for JOAQUIN!!! He'd be an absolutely brilliant signing. He's gonna be a real star. He just turned down another contract extension offer from Betis. Real are tracking him as well. He'd cost a lot, but we could include Geovanni and perhaps someone else in a player plus cash deal. Joaquin would be my top priority in the transfer market if I were Barca.

Probably in the order of 50 or 60 million dollars. Joaquin has already been on record saying he'd like to play for Madrid. I imagine he'll go there when he moves. Barça have shown no interest in Joaquin.

I knew you'd shoot me down!!! While i've not read of any official interest, I have read in some articles that Barca are monitoring his situation. I'm sure they must be. Real would probably get him though. However, if we moved quickly and in the very near future, we could snatch him. I don't know where the $ would come from though.

I would love for Joaquin to go to Barça as well (for two reasons ;) ). But the truth is that Joaquin has stated before that he feels like a merengue, he then retracted that after he got too much attention at Betis for saying that but the fact does remain that he would select Madrid before anybody else. As far as real interest from Barça, I just have never read anything other than opinions by editors (i.e. Diario Sport).

True that Juanele, just in a blaugrana newspaper could you find an opinion like that.

I read the newspaper in a regular basis and sometimes can't stand the blindness (bias), but I also find news that aren't available in any other places, not even the official site!

I agree. There are something like 200 beat writers for Barça alone. How many stories can they come up with? I do enjoy the interviews sometimes and some other tidbits that they have though. However, most of the time it is all garbage. It is the same in Madrid with their multitude of beat writers.

Yep, $55 million dollars, if the rumors are true. For that price you could buy Chivu and a good striker or mid.

But back to Mike's point earlier in this thread (and something I usually harp on)...Barca need to build consistency from a core group. They could and should build around Puyol/Xavi/Saviola, etc. Look at Bayern. They don't spend 1/2 as much as Real or Barca and that core of Kahn/Effenberg/Lizarazu/Elber/Jeremies was solid for several years.

Re: Re: Re: A better J for Barca

I agree about building the squad, but LVG should ring in the changes in his first season rather than a season or two later. There is some deadweight we could get rid of and replace. I'd sell Geovanni, Reiziger, Andersson and Christanval.

Bayern do spend very little. It's really a mystery to me though how they do it. When Barca were rumoured to be after Ballack last season, it was for much more than what Bayern paid for him. It's really odd though how Bayern get these good players for so cheap. It's not great scouting either. The players' transfer fees are always dilluted.

Re: Re: Re: Re: A better J for Barca

Barça could've been able to get rid of Reiziger, Andersson and/or Christanval if LVG didn't already sack Sergi, Abelardo & Coco. Sure, all 3 were injury-prone, but compared to the others, they were the smarter, more experienced defenders of the bunch. As far as Geovanni goes, he's useless and will probably see little action this season if no one gets seriously hurt. Same with Rochemback. They can both go.

That's where I don't get Van Gaal. He liquidates his defensive core, even though everyone knows good defenders are very hard to come by in the transfer market. He then complains that Barça is lacking a center-forward (even though the club's supposedly tightening up their belt financially)? For a manager who is very good at bringing youngsters to prominence, you'd think he'd find a center forward to groom from the B squad, and concentrate on finding an able-bodied defender or two. Scoring isn't going to be the problem this season. They conceded some bad goals last season & have done nothing positive to improve for this campaign.

I too wish he would have kept Sergi. Coco would have been too expensive to buy (we only had him on loan last season) and I've never been a big Abelardo fan. Damn though, I really wish he would have kept Sergi.

    Latest from Team Talk:

Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has claimed his team are in negotiations to sign Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
Hasselbaink is eager to link up with former Holland manager Louis van Gaal, who is back in charge at the Nou Camp and there has been growing speculation that a £7m move to the Catalan giants is imminent.
And Gaspart has now confirmed that he is keen on signing the Dutchman - but only if the price is right.
He told The Sun: "We are in talks with Hasselbaink's people. We are interested in signing him and we think he will be complementary to fellow Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert.
"He could be the piece we need in our team but it depends on the economic aspects."
Hasselbaink's departure would be a major blow to Chelsea, who would have little time to secure a replacement before the transfer window closes on August 31.
His agent Humphrey Nijman, meanwhile, insisted that no move had yet been discussed and added: "There has been no contact whatsoever between Barcelona and me and, as far as I know, no contact between Barcelona and Chelsea. Jimmy loves Chelsea and loves the fans and London is a great city. It is all speculation and Jimmy has no reason to consider a move at this moment."
But speaking after Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Friday night, Hasselbaink admitted would consider a move back to Spain.
"It's not that I want to leave or put in a transfer request - I don't," he said. "But I'm just saying you never know.
"I was asked by a Spanish newspaper if I would be interested and I said that if a club like that comes to you then you are going to be flattered and you'll listen to the offer. That's all I've said."

Price could be cheaper though. Chelsea still owe us 5 million pounds from their purchase of Zenden and Petit.
