I second this. Foudy…needs to take Lalas and coach some team somewhere, so she can get some rep for all her incessant blabbing. You can make a drinking game out of her comments reliving the 99ers too.
Any of the commentators from the other games will do. I’m just happy for now that JP Delacamera isn’t there with her too.

And the match went to extra time (and indeed all the way to PK's). Our players won't be the only ones with lots of minutes on their legs. Also Germany has, I think, been starting the same front 6 every game (but had a bit of rotation in their defense). But, they did sub a few of them out earlier than we did (They made 4 subs in the last game, but that includes subbing out one of the subs, Endemann).

Arm does not count. It has to be a body part with which you are allowed to play the ball.

"Automatic suspension in next match" means at least 1 match; it can be more. Marta received a 2 game suspension, as is the norm for a straight red for serious foul play:

However, with Brazil guaranteed 2 more games, she will get a chance to play in one more Olympic match, whether its the final or the 3rd place game.

Since we are dreaming, I fussed over not putting a true better CB on the roster. But, who are we to have an opinion.

You would have been 8 shots in by the halftime. I did it the last game.

I enjoy Lalas, he played the game well and understands the game, he wants what we all want, the USA men to stop under performing. Onward and upward!

Why can't Krueger play central defense?

A couple of days ago I saw a clip of players getting off the bus. Davidson was hobbling. I don't think she plays again this tournament. Hope I'm wrong.

Are you sure he wants that? My guess is he's quite happy having terrible performances to comment on. Brings more attention to him. This is the guy that in a kind of braggy way said on the American Fiasco podcast that he actively tried to undermine the team's performance in WC98 out of spite, since he wasn't starting. I can't believe he has a soccer-related job in the US.

She is soooooo overexposed. There was a promotion for some show about the US Women's performance in the '96 Olympics, in all sports. Sure enough, there's Foudy blabbing away. Someone.Else.Please! And, ya, all the self-referential stuff gets nauseating. One thing has improved, with Ian Darke especially, watching a match with her announcing is like watching the match in a bar. The person next to you is talking about anything and everything but the match. There have been countless shots that Foudy has talked over, talking about something other than the match. This go-round seems better, more discussing the match. Even this last one, where there was nothing to talk about for much of the match.

ya, Sonnett was beaten for pace twice both times she got the job done. Sonnett keeps things simple. She's not flashy but she's good.

A couple of remarks about tactics. I'm with Julie that we should have tried a few over the top balls. I don't know what we're trying to accomplish having 4-5 players statically standing along the restraining line doing nothing. At least play the occasional ball behind the defense. Japan was sending midfielders through our restraining line, and playing them in. And, we weren't tracking those runs. Look for Germany to do the same. And, we should do the same. Sadly, the only time we played balls through, the intended recipient was ........ Horan. The waddling one is not going to beat anyone in a footrace. We gotta play the other advanced midfielder through sometimes. Good news is that I don't think we won't play anyone playing Japan's tactics the rest of the way.

Foudy isn’t a good announcer, but it’s hard for me to be too down on her because that’s not what I like her for. Folks keep putting her on tv, that’s not her fault.

I has the same questions. Lining 4 up on the back shoulders and never playing it over the top seemed very odd.

I would not trust any of them really to check in the half space either, but it was odd. And so evident compared to whenever Japan had the ball. Japan got the ball in the box at a much higher percentage rate than the US.

She doesn't have to say yes every time. She could say, "I'll pass, but you know who would be great ....."

It seemed to me that Japan set their defenders so that it would be hard to play over the top. There was some space behind, but not very much, so it was going to be hard for attacking players to get the ball and do anything. But, on the Dunn over the top ball to Rodman, Rodman scored by a brilliant control of the ball, cut back, and shot. One could make an argument that all the conservative play lulled Japan into letting that happen.

Also, if you try to play over the top, most of the time you are going to turn the ball over. The US clearly wanted to dominate possession. Their conservative tactics allowed them to do that, limiting Japan's possession severely.

I am really surprised no one here has criticized Japan's tactics. We are missing a starting center back and our starting defensive midfielder and they nevertheless cede us possession? They must have been really fearful of how our triumvirate would match up against their backs, if they sent their players forward.

The Dunn pass was the great example of how to do it. If that behind the line pass is vertical, then you're rarely going to win it. A diagonal pass from one side to the opposite side AW has a muuuuuuuch better chance of being successful. And, how many times did we try that? Once? How many times did it work? Once?

Another thing I mean to add, at some point, I feel like we should have been playing more for corners. You're down by the endline with no options? Bang it off your defender and get a corner out of it.

Because she's needed to play in Fox' place.

At least, that did not look like Fox will be seen again this tournament. Or maybe she does play the middle and Sams plays outside?
