I'll go ahead and start a thread since the games have been announced. The USWNT will face Japan three times in April: Saturday, April 11, at PayPal Park in San Jose at 2:30 p.m. PT (on TNT, truTV and HBOMax in English and Universo and Peacock in Spanish) Tuesday, April 14, at Lumen Field in Seattle at 7 p.m. PT (on TNT, truTV and HBOMax in English, Universo and Peacock in Spanish) Friday, April 17, at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Colorado at 7 p.m. MT (on TNT, truTV and HBOMax in English, Universo and Peacock in Spanish) https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...japan-april-matches-san-jose-seattle-colorado
Do you think that japan will win all three matches or, maybe, be limited to only a two out of three victory? I do not remember ever, on the men's or the women's side, having three consecutive matches against the same team. But, not being up on the overall schedule, I could miss things. Shoot I do not even remember the date(s) of the artificial "She Believes" tournament and this, somehow, could relate to that.
SheBelieves is in March (SheBelieves thread); the Japan matches are just regular friendlies. I went back and looked, and the last time the USWNT played the same opponent 3x in a row was, I think, in December 2012 with 3 wins against China to finish off the 2012 Olympic victory tour. It's actually just as unusual though to have 3 matches in the April FIFA window; usually it's only 2 friendlies. I'm not sure why this time is different.
On Nadeshiko Japan's thread we have figured that it could be a way to simulate the timing the teams would have to face at the group stage of a big international tournament (although of course, in that case, the games wouldn't be all against a same opponent).
That's what I'm thinking. Hayes has said there is not much time to prepare so this could be a way to do so. And a couple players post Portugal loss said as much that in a major tournament they have short prep time so need to adjust to that.
It definitely could be, and it seems to be a permanent-ish change in that it is also true for 2027 and 2028. From FIFA's perspective, I wonder if it was also to offer something to the spring tournament organizers for moving many qualifiers to the Feb/March window and screwing a lot of those tournaments. So, possibly Algarve Cup, Cyprus Cup, and SheBelieves could move to the April window and have more teams available? I'm not sure organizers would move an actual tournament for various reasons, but those tournaments did offer a similar structure to the group stage of a big tournament and so for teams that cannot participate in them yearly anymore, they could get something similar in the next window.
Off-topic, but I would like that move, because it could resurrect those tournaments and it would give me the chance to attend them through a potential better weather. I've been in Algarve in early March twice: in one of those circumstances the weather had been anyway great, but in the other one it had been quite constantly rainish (does the word exist in English? I mean not properly fully rainy, but close to).
Me, too; I'm still sad I never got to go to an Algarve tournament while the US played in it. Even if the Algarve moved to the later window, I doubt the USWNT would go back, but I'd still like to visit the Algarve for both soccer and good weather! I don't think I've heard rainish as a word before, but I know what you mean. I think I'd use the words drizzly, misty, or just overcast/gloomy (if no actual moisture in the air).
Most probably the correct word is drizzly, since there used to always be an annoying half-rain in the air.
US has that HUGE advantage of all three games played at home. Plus Japan will have to change to unfamiliar pitches & training facilities from one game to another to another, whereas US players are already used to them
Sorta. There should be a full compliment of European-based players, so I'm not sure how familiar they would be to the training facilities other than the occasional match being played there. And with the notable Japanese contingent in the NWSL, I would think some of them would be as familiar as the US players.
I'm in Oregon's Willamette Valley, where it's the rainy season from November into April (temperate rain forest) and we have many names for liquid precipation depending on its characteristics. For what you are referring to, I think our term would be rainy on and off. For intermittent rain and sun, we call it liquid sunshine. We're used to rain enough that we seldom use umbrellas, although we all have at least one and probably several.
I posted the FOTMOB power rankings(for best performers)of the respective Japan/USA players from the top, neutral WSL league 3rd. Fujino……….:….16 Fox 8th. Hasegawa………32 Thompson 15. Seiko…………….47 Tullis-Joyce 24. Miyazama……….65. Macario 35. Yamashita………111 Girma 74. Ueki……………..136 Coffey 86. Koga…………….—- Nighswonger 93. Kumagai 117 Minami 120 Nagano 123 Miniki edge maybe to Japan?
Edge to Japan if you accept (for example) that Girma's ranking - 111 - is in any way reflective of her quality (when healthy). I am not doubting the numbers, but I'm not sure what they're worth.
And will Nighswonger get a call? She'll only have been playing regularly for a couple of months, top. Coffey's number seems really low as well.
That's what I thought-- not so much to train for it as to see how this year's team reacts, and to see if anything special must be planned for with this version of the organization(s)
Move Girma up about 60-70 spotss (min), 40-50 for Coffey. Wilson, Rodman, Lavelle, and Sonnett cannot be on the list..
As soon as I saw Girma at 111, my 'fraud meter' for this ranking went off the scale. Thanks, but no thanks. LOL.
The only other website player ratings that I know of is Sofasoccer but they only go to top 50(which Girma didn’t make it) Dunno why Girma is so much in the dump in the ratings: Chelsea has had a lot of injury problems this season, so team chemistry(which usually jacks up stats) might not be there. And then not a fan of Girma’s main partner, Millie Bright, wn over bloated CB who will often crash into/knock over her own teammates to get the ball—so I can see Norma getting out of the way anytime there’s an high ball coming their way. And there’s always an difference between playing for club & country
Girma was also out for a lot of 2025. That was also reflected in her lack of placement in the best of 2025 rankings.
