Japan 2-0 Austria sets the table very nicely … USA v Mexico Germany v Argentina Brazil v Cameroon North Korea v Austria Japan v Nigeria Spain v Canada France v Netherlands Colombia v South Korea Some interesting matchups in R16, with some heavyweight matchups looming in the quarterfinals.
From US Soccer ... USA v Mexico on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Estadio El Campin in Bogotá (9 p.m. ET on FS2 & Telemundo Digital). The USA will remain in the Colombian capital for Wednesday’s Round of 16 tilt with Mexico although it’ll move about 5 miles across town to the much larger Estadio El Campín -- the site of the World Cup Final. The U.S. fell to El Tri, 2-1, in the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship final in June 2023. In a pair of July 2024 friendlies between the teams in Athens, Ga., the Americans earned a 1-1 draw thanks to a goal from Tordin before defeating Mexico, 3-0, three days later with goals by Sentnor (2) and Riley Jackson. Mexico went 1W-1L-1D during Group A play at the World Cup, drawing Cameroon, 2-2, before beating Australia, 2-0, and losing to host Colombia, 1-0.
Japan is an sual favorite to win this tourney. One of the main reasons is that high school soccer is HUGE over there, just look at the crowd sixe in this match ive been to many an high school game over here, and we're licky if we can 100 people to attend even though it's both boys & girls games event. How can we make soccer grow like Japan in this country?
here's info from last year's Concacaf u20 finals(which counted as well as qualifiers for the WC) I count six starters among the eleven players that aren't part of the this year's roster. Mexico U20 vs. United States U20 - 4 June 2023 - Women Soccerway wouldn't it be better to turn the Concacaf into an u19 tourney instead?--that way those responsible for qualifying us can play at the World Cup as well)(as I'm taking in part that the eleven players from last year are now past the age mark to particpate in the WC)
The CONCACAF tournament and the World Cup had the same birthdate cutoff, Jan. 1, 2004. No players from last year were left off due to age. In fact, Ally Sentnor (2/18/04) is the oldest player on both squads. A lot can happen in 15 months at this age level. That's over 6% of their lives. Several of the new players are 06s who may not have been ready last year but are now.
The first two R16 matches are in the books: Spain 2-1 Canada Brazil 3-1 Cameroon Coming up soon: USA v Mexico Colombia v South Korea
Well the first two matches were horrible to watch and i expect the next two to be better. But I "could" well be wrong. I do kind of think they will be better but you never know. Colombia, at least, will have a decent crowd. I do hope they forget the horns and drums however.
On a GK error, failing to cover near post, the USA goes up 1-0. In the other match it looks like neither team is at all dominate but Korea seems a bit more likely to score right now.
Now Mexico scores on a horrid defensive breakdown by the USA. I guess one good error deserves another.
Now we have the Mexican GK making another error. The Mexican GK is having a horrible match. I would suggest giving her as many chances as possible to screw up again. I think she will oblige. Her foot work is horrible.
well at least we have consistency. Another defensive error results in a goal for Mexico. 2-2 and it is errors rather than good play that is showing at this time. 4 total goals and the really good plays can be counted on the thumbs of one hand. But at least it is exciting.
It is 2-2 at the half. The first half has been a comedy of errors except it is not funny to watch some good play completely negated by really stupid errors. The USA seems to be afraid of Mexico and I am not sure why. Mexico is not playing either hard or dirty. The other match 0-0 and it appears closer than that. If the USA match does not get better I may switch to the other match to watch as my primary. It is kind of strange when a 0-0 match seems more exciting than a 2-2 match. At least it is soccer (real football) so all is not lost.
Thompson just put in one of the worst halves I have ever seen. and she is uselessly offsides on that goal. Need to bench her ASAP on principle at this point. She is -3 goals right now. Thompson off In the 65th. Should have happened in the first half after the second Mexican goal.
We are going to have a LOT of stoppage time in the USA match. The other match does not seem to have as much coming but I have not been watching that match as closely. Since it is a Columbia lead 1-0 there I do not expect extra time as Korea is not looking threatening. But they do have some really good skill as so could score on something brilliant or on some random Colombia error. It also looks like, baring another error somewhere Mexico vs USA could also enter overtime in a few minutes. But, as I said, there will be a lot of extra time. If the referee has been paying attention and actually can count and wants to call the match correctly. 12 minutes is the decision so, good job ref.
The Colombia match ends 1-0 for Colombia. The USA match is nearing the end of Extra time but there "should" be an additional 2-4 minutes after that due to time wasting by Mexico.
The extra time ends. The ref added very little more to the extra time so Mexico's delaying tactics did not cost them anything. The overtime should be interesting as both teams look tired and Mexico have a couple of players, including their GK, that seem to be carrying a knock.
USA scores after a very bad giveaway and a great strike by Dudley (I hope I got that name right) and an assist that was great as well. Now the question becomes: Will Mexico make another comeback?
There is a review of a possible PK. The contact was hard but it also was shoulder to shoulder. I guess the power was enough to negate the shoulder to shoulder. PK. A very bad PK was saved by the substitute GK.
Pretty obvious penalty. Shouldn’t need a challenge for that. Review does its job though. And the PK is blown. Still 3-2. Pretty good save I have to admit.
Are these games available on demand? I am mostly interested in non-US games because I have been able to watch their games live. Thanks.
I know there's no much traffic these days, but I thought it would be good to move from this 2.5 year old wwc qualifying thread, so I started a thread for the knockout matches. 2024 WWC U-20 Tournament - Knockout Matches | BigSoccer Forum
I think most matches are available via the Fox sports app. I think they have all the knockout matches but, if any are not there NBC will probably have them at least in Spanish.
