I was not comparing the two, I was comparing your judgement of the two, there is a difference.

I just find your critiques of US players and the style of play here condescending in a lot of your posts, and while I normally don't respond to you, I couldn't help myself this time.

Pele not Pepe, and I don't believe that players cared more about etiquette than winning in the 60's, 70's and 80's versus nowadays. There were some nasty players and ugly games during the aforementioned decades.

 

Sad. I had a lot of respect for Brazil after the first game with their speed and press, but after the second game, I lost all respect. One of the worst displays of sportsmanship that I have seen across coaches and players. Other than the a few players (GK and one player who respectively shook the officials hands after the game), the team was a collective bunch of whinners and poster child of entitlement. Embarassing!

Huge credit to the US who should have won 2-0 or 3-0. I was very impressed with Wesley and Sonnet came back from a poor first game. Heaps was not good in either match (better in the second though). Good coaching to move Copper into defense later in the game. Yohannas was probably my biggest disappointment. Yes, she is still 18, but the upside may not be as great as I was thinking. Too slow in both foot and thought.

 

I find it interesting how disagreeing with another opinion automatically makes me incompetent. I don’t know you to have any opinion on your background. I just disagree with you. You make all sorts of assumptions as to who I am and what I know. Let’s just leave it there and accept we see things differently. It is perfectly normal and can be done respectfully

 

where did I say Marta could do no wrong? I feel like you are reading things I have not written. I make no apologies for my opinions and you are free to yours.

 

Fair enough, you didn’t say those exact words. But when you excuse one player's behavior with 'you do what it takes to win' while holding another to a standard of flawless execution, it creates that impression. Also, saying someone 'will always be class' right after they lose their cool feels like a blank check, which is why it sounded like she could do no wrong in your eyes.

My point is that as a legend and vet, Marta had an opportunity to lead by example and show the younger players how to handle defeat. We clearly have different bars for what constitutes 'class' on the pitch. I’m not asking you to apologize for your opinions, just explaining how they came across when contrasted against each other.

 

There are facts and there are opinions, you are factually wrong. It is not being respectful to not call out obvious ignorance and falsehood. I know people can feel upset when challenged, if you are one of them, the public forum may not be a place for you.

That's weird because we always put the Brazilian national team on a pedestal. They are soccer royalty, which makes it so disappointing when the Brazil team that shows up at the World Cup is often more Richarlison than Zico.

 

Yeah, I was reading that comment and was thinking about the way Brasil was described and treated couldnot be more in contrast with it.

 

Nostalgia based on Joga Bonito. Brazil have not been that team for years. Football was about 10s, expression, freedom. Now it is pragmatic and about winning at all costs. For me, it began to shift In 1982 - Brazil vs Italy. World Cup

 

Yes, nostalgia, but it's based on continued admiration and respect. That anti-Brasil racism shit was and is very much absent.

At least we have some consolation with the men's team looking really good in their first match of the world cup. I haven't been following them until this week and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality.

 

I do have some concerns about the men's side namely that they will not play with the needed intensity against Australia and therefore get in a match that Australia will feel more confident in when the play deteriorates. However Australia really does not have the athletes to play straight up against the USA.
They surprised Turkiye and beat them handedly 2-0 with only about 30% possession. I have concerns that they could do the same to the USA. Australia is a very concerning team because they do not need the ball to control matches.
We will see what happens Friday. I wish Turkiye played before the USA on Friday because I would like to get a better feel for what to expect from Australia.
But this ain't a men's forum so I will desist. I find posting in the men's forums difficult because there ae a LOT of folks there that do not think much at all.

I also hope next year is a bit more fun for me.

 

Huge moment for US soccer tonight and I imagine that many are focused on the men at the moment like I am. But this came up in my feed and it is really well done. Got me even more amped up for the game tonight. GO USA!!!
