Old news. The email in early August that welcomed Brian Hall wished Rick Eddy well on his future endeavors.

People actually read those emails? They just remind you that safesport is required again even though you took it 2 months ago.

I'm in journalism. It might take me less time to tell you who HASN'T been laid off in the last 25 years.

We once had a pretty generous buyout offer based on years of service. I knew one guy who was hesitating, and it was all I could do to avoid screaming at him to take this one because the next round was going to be less generous and he would surely face the axe. Sure enough -- he didn't take the buyout, and a few months later, he was gone.

    Possibly, yes.
It's pretty slim pickings out there for someone in their early 60s.

Loyalty? You're "expected" to give 2 weeks notice when you're moving on to bigger and better things but they can tell you to take a hike on the very same day you walk in, despite the number of years you've been with them and despite the amount of money you brought their way.

I like the current trend, which is to announce you are resigning on your last day, after you have accepted a new role. The reasons given why you should provide advance notice never made sense and are mostly antiquated.

Yes, they can lay you off without notice. They usually also give a few weeks severance package. (sometimes more). Just like people quitting with no notice, there are exceptions where the company doesn't give any severance. I hear people say this all the time these days even though they got paid for the next 2 to 6 weeks.

Actually, it depends on the size of the layoff. Above a certain size, the law requires prior notice of layoffs.

It also depends on the company. Some companies have more humane layoff/severance policies than others. It’s always good to know what the severance policy is at the company you work at, just in case.they may be posted subtly on company internal websites.
