Damet is actually starting to manage! Last night, he pulled Sangbin even though he had some more minutes in him because he didn't want to use another window. Today he's talking about rotating the squad with an eye on Tuesday, and understanding that it's not just throw your same guys out there over and over. We have hope!!!
Weather. Ugh, It looks like a soggy mess for the USOC match. The thunderstorms should move out by early afternoon but it's looking like a humid breezy drizzle at least through kickoff.
Here's the MLS Match Information for tonight's match. No confirmation on this, but I'm guessing that KYKY Y98.1 will have the radio broadcast of the match, since they did the first two USOC matches.
Starting XI: Burki-MacNaughton-Baumgartl-Polvara-Wallem-Totland-Durkin-Edelman-Sangbin-Hartel-Cordova Bench: Lundt-Becher-Fallou-Mbacke-Joyner-Lowen-McSorley
What a win (well draw if you're being accurate)!! Knockout football isn't always about being the best team. Freaking Polvara was immense. Ben Lundt provides more reasons to be upset about Burki being a DP. Everyone clamoring for more McSorley, yikes...his finishing makes Becher look like Harry Kane. Damet and co have given me hope heading into the World Cup break. Wray better go get a bona fide 9 that can win us a semi final. I asked and asked Damet to go all in to win the USOC, and now I will appropriately adjust my expectations for Saturday. That's gonna be a tough turnaround, in a massive bottom of the table 6 pointer. Oh well!! We will celebrate this one and then Wray better get to work!
So many seemingly small things built to the win. Burki's injury put Lundt in goal, and he did Lundt magic on the PKs. CITY's early goal gave confidence that we could break down Houston's low block. That made a one-goal deficit less scary than it would have been in a nil-1 match. Totland sacrificed himself for the team defending. Edu's presence late in the match seemed to lift the team. Becher baited Houston into getting whistled for a couple key fouls that disrupted their play. He also had a great pass that should have led to a goal. Right after Polvara's amazing save, Wallem fouled Ennali and baited Ennali into a reply foul that resulted in his mustard-and-ketchup. This allowed CITY to ride out the extra time with Houston getting only one more shot. All of our guys made their PKs. Baungartl as our #3 pen taker will become part of CITY's lore forever. And Lundt proved why he is the best backup keeper in the MLS. We have a coach, and the players clearly trust him. We have a solid core group of players, and the upgrade needs have gone from "maybe everything" to "we can see the needs more clearly now.". We have a system that has proved it can break down defenses and get shots (which we badly need to finish). We have a team that can play from behind. And we have a team that just keeps clawing and gnawing away at the opponents. There's a lot more that needs to be done to rebuild, but this isn't nothing. It's a foundation.
Watching these will never grow old. Here are the Match Highlights and Post-Match Press Conference videos.
