I have good word that some Houston Dynamo faithful have made the road trip to Austin today to support our naranja boys in this Open Cup match up! GET 'ER DONE TONIGHT BOYS! VAMOS HOUSTON and DALE DYNAMO!!!
Hard to look at the starting line up and believe Ol Ben was serious about this game. Maurer? Seriously? Austin is either last or next to last in scoring and we gave up 3. Brooklyn getting 2 yellows within like 10 mnts was kinda special. We trotted out 3 starters and our 3rd string keeper and got killed for it. I guess now we gotta hope to go from worst to first in the same year. Game ended 3-1 and it wasn't even that close. Barf
I was shocked at how changed the lineup was but I also realize that 9 games in May meant something has to give -- those players all were going to have to get some minutes somewhere. The penalty call was beyond mystifying. The rule book was amended in recent years by IFAB to directly address the facts right there -- and IFAB clarified it is NOT a penalty. Never. For a sliding defender the bottom arm, supporting the player, is not a handball, the top arm is. The following is from IFAB's website: First goal was some really poor defending. Vasquez is back-to-goal there. Ortiz took himself out of the play. Young defender mistake. Third goal was rough: Bartlow gave the ball away, then gave the endline away. Ouch. Umm, Duenos & Lodeiro. I'm just not seeing it from them. Jack looked great at the Artur role -- deep on the right. He was immediately dangerous.
I was able to watch live almost all of the Open Cup matches via Golazo Network last night with drop in coverage of the various matches. NJ Red Bull vs FCD was a barnburner for example! So was the DC United vs. Charlotte match. Since our match was the late one, they played pretty much the entire second half. Like y'all mentioned, that thrown together line up was not used to each other and very unexperienced. Austin's people showed up, unlike other MLS grounds that were very empty, so their players really had something to play for and it showed. The game got hectic towards the end as two reds were handed out so the match ended 10 v 10. We had some chances to pull level late on after we did finally score 1, but again, our forwards just did not finish after that. Our goalie did make a tremendous double save on that PK the ref gifted them late on. Correct. His run of play and dead ball service was top shelf! Thing is, with the Gold Cup soon, and veterans from the team sitting out, Poch might select our Jackie Boy and he is the last player we need gone for a month.
To be fair if Raines doesn’t get those two yellows there’s a good chance the final score is 1-5. Both were necessary and likely saved goals.
Your right. First yellow was taking one for the team. Good professional decision by him with the team caught upfield pressing for a goal. Second yellow was on Lodeiro. He made a horrible turnover and put Raines in the crapper.
