Well…it’s an upward move. It’s month 0 of 48 in the next cycle so we’re all interested in everything obviously.

It would be great if young man acclimatized well and established a starting spot.

This is the point in the cycle when a Matthew Hoppe move is notable.

dest brings + attacking from the rb position, is about average for a "balanced" wingback...but theres a reason no one other than poch thinks hes a winger- and that reason is hes not.

a lot of you are probably hoping these world cup threads fall off the first page pretty quick, cause theres a whole of "dest as all-time american rw" posts out there...

It may be more that Poch doesn't think Dest is a RB at levels beyond Eredivisie.

I have long wondered why isn’t just a winger.

I think we saw that this World Cup. He's more dynamic and effective coming from deeper as more of a ball progressor than chance creator.

That, and the fact that his offense is more valuable at fullback than at winger relative to other players.

Yeah, I feel like this is why he didn’t stick at Barcelona. Compared to pure wingers for this caliber team, he’s not great. But compared to pure RBs for this caliber team, he’s also not great. So, I think he’s best for teams looking for some deep lying offense from the flank without being an out and out winger who can also live with some defensive shortcomings. That suits a team like PSV, but I find it hard to imagine him making it at a super club.

Yeah I believe Xavi flat out said (maybe was Koeman dont remember) that Dest is serviceable as a winger but for ehat you want a winger to do thats bot his skill set in the final third

The United States full-back said Xavi didn't give him enough opportunities to prove himself, restricted his playing style and went back on promises he had made to him.

"I wouldn't say regrets, because how it ended didn't depend on me, but I don't feel I had the necessary chances with Xavi," Dest told Diario Sport of his four years as a Barça player.

"I felt like I had to play with limits; that I could not be myself. I want to join the attack, which is my biggest strength, but he asked me not to go forward.

"I don't think he was honest with me, either. We had several conversations in which he told me one thing but after I had doubts whether he really told me the truth.

"In the summer [of 2023], before going on holiday, he told me: 'I am counting on you, don't read the press.' And as soon as I returned, he told me: 'You have to go.'"

I can see why Xavi didn't like him.

Bayer Leverkusen not Bayern Munich is the better fit for Dest.

PSV is the perfect fit because they really don't need the defense much at all, and they hold the ball so much his offense is valuable.

I think worse teams at the top 5 level would struggle to play him at fullback -- they don't have the ball enough or bring men forward enough to justify him. And better teams can get a two way player or an elite winger.

Where I could see a fit is Dest at winger for some of these middling to bottom table teams -- is he really not better than Kevin Paredes. But then it becomes a question of cost relative to production. And while Dest is very talented, he has not been super goal productive.

While this quote doesnt really back what im about to say, Dest's personality is an acquired taste for many clubs. I dont think Dest is unprofessional but I do know his year at Milan he had the reputation of not taking things serious enough ofd the field

It just seems weird that he’d go from not being good enough in League 1 to Ligue 1. But more power to him if it gets worked out.
