How the hell does a third division Austrian club afford THAT!?!?!?

Man, Football Manager has been lying to me all these years.

Another player possibly on his way to Mexico. Liga MX sure seems to be ramping up their recruitment of Americans. No?

My guess on Tessman is $8M with Dallas getting $1.6 million.

This seems like a good deal. Wiley on the verge of being sold to Chelsea and then loaned to Strasbourg in France. Sounds good.

I think he'd be better off going straight to Strasbourg rather submitting to perma-loan hell.

    Remember Matt Miazga
    2016–2018→ Vitesse (loan)
    2018–2019→ Nantes (loan)
    2019–2020→ Reading (loan)
    2020–2021→ Anderlecht (loan)
    2021–2022→ Alavés (loan)
    2021– FC Cincinnati

Wiley to stratsbourg is a very good day. Makes the need to call up Dejuan jones for Olympics all the more important if that goes down

That would be better but I imagine there are financial considerations. For this season, it’s a very good move. After that, it could go Miazga and that’s a worry for another day for this fan.

Chelsea throw talent against the wall to see what sticks. Poor old Gaga spent the season playing with a terrible team in a tiny stadium that looks like a public park.

The upside is that if either does break into the Chelsea squad then they'll be in the elite.

Stratsbourg at least provides a very clear path and plan. Versus having to try and find a new loan each year.

I dislike the Chelsea part, but like the Strasbourg part. :)

The Chelsea "loan army" thing doesn't seem to work for many players.

It's worked for plenty of players. I posted the below seven years ago when this same topic came up.

While I don't have the time or interest right now to go back and look in detail at Chelsea's loanees since then, off the top of my head I can think of players like Gallagher, Tomori, Guehi, Gilmour and Maatsen who spent time on loan and have since found success either with Chelsea or at a different top flight club. Like I said seven years ago, when I look at Chelsea's loan "army" I see a whole bunch of players playing at an appropriate level for their skills who are developing as players(e.g., 30+ matches for a 19 year old Gabriel Slonina in a top 8 European league). Is it ideal? Probably not, but it could be a whole lot worse.

The most likely path is he spends a couple years at Strasbourg then moves on to a bigger club. Whether that is a loan or a buy move remains to be seen. I don't think his talent is pitched high enough to be a Chelsea player. I see him topping out as a regular for a team in the top half of the table of a Big 4 league.

From a financial point of view, signing with Chelsea is probably a no brainer. I will never second guess a player for taking the money.

Happy to see the next gen guys making European moves. I hope some of them disrupt the status quo on the senior roster. Too much complacency in that pleasant club.

The loan army thing is just how European football works these days. Everyone is doing it. We only talk about Chelsea. What was the point of Arsenal buying Auston Trusty? Of Man City buying Erik Palmer-Brown?

Talent is just being concentrated at the big European clubs. As we saw in the last transfer window, the money isn't great right now even at the mid-tier teams in big leagues. Nobody was spending.

Who can afford to pay the price tag that Wiley was/is commanding? 8-10 million?? And which clubs are going to spend that amount on a "project." Wiley isn't ready to play for Chelsea. Which clubs in Europe are spending 10 million on a guy that they don't expect to star right away?

And people say that if he wants to play in the middle of LIgue 1, he should just transfer there! Why go to Chelsea?

Cuz middle-tier Ligue 1 isn't paying that price. I'll pick a club at random. Toulouse. Finished 11th last year in Ligue 1. Caleb Wiley would be their all-time transfer record if the price tag above is accurate.

Yes, its true. San Diego doesn't exist and they already crushed Tolouse's all-time transfer record. They paid 12 million for Lozano (reportedly).
