I would be very surprised not to have a WCQ in the new Crew Stadium this cycle. Maybe even Mexico if a win is needed and it is during a cold month.
I'd be tempted to agree, except for the last home game vs them when we pissed away our home field advantage. Plus, the cold weather doesn't matter as much now that their roster isn't entirely based off people who play in the Mexican league. In 2001, it made sense. Of course, I'd be happy with it, but we definitely don't have the mojo for obtaining that game that we once did. But now that we have a new stadium, we're definitely in line for premier US games, the All-Star Game, perhaps CONCACAF, etc.
At the expense of home-field advantage? They may be dumb, but they have to be smart enough to remember what happens when they put US-Mexico in LA or Houston. Save the cash grabs for the friendly matches. They can put that in an NFL stadium, sell 70k tickets to Mexican fans at $100 and up and then make a huge payday while exposing the team to a hostile environment.
I bet US Soccer wants to qualify a bit more than packing the Rose bowl. It might depend on where it falls in the schedule and if we need points or not. I doubt they announce the full locations until part way through qualifying. If things are going well, bigger southern stadium, if we are not assured then here, KC, or Minnesota would be my bet.
We should certainly get a match, most likely US-Mexico. Although they won last time, we've had more success vs them in Columbus than any other city. If we manage another Dos a Cero, that helps a lot in the standings.
The game will go to whichever part of the country that allows the most fans into the stadium at that time. If all is equal or close to normal, then we might get a shot due to the 2-0 history although the last game wasn't as successful.
I'm shocked y'all still think anyone at US Soccer or SUM has "winning" as their top priority when it comes to the US v Mexico World Cup Qualifier. US Soccer Priorities: 1) Broadcast Revenue 2) Ticket Revenue 3) Reputation of US Soccer 4) Impact on Relevance of MLS Players 5) Winning the match
Their priority should be qualifying for the World Cup, as everything flows from that. I would suspect SUM took quite a revenue hit when the USMNT failed to qualify for Russia.
I totally agree, as revenue will increase with continued World Cup success (as defined by entry to the Round of 16). But US Soccer has had its priorities out of whack for quite some time.
I believe SUM also has a financial interest in airing Mexican National Team games. Maybe I’m making this up. Instead of Googling it I’ll let one of you do it.
Trying to figure out where the matches are going to be held before the pandemic is under control is mental masterbation.
