This is one of the interesting things about modern thought. It used to be that if a person held two conflicting viewpoints, that person would see that there was an issue of logic. Today? People are capable of doing so--and not seeing that there is any issue at all.
"The only problem with the scientific method is that a lot of folks are treating it like magic (or deity)--a corollary of Clarke's Third Law, methinks. Some scientists, too, tend to think that the D in Ph.D. stands for deity." - kgilbert78 As posted in the coronavirus thread.
(1) Quite a few people are expecting a cure or a vaccine. Soon. Along the line of "scientists will do some sciencey thing, and we'll have one". Maybe there is, maybe there isn't. All science gives us is the method. There's no guarantee we'll get a vaccine. AIDS has been waiting for one some time now, though there have been some successes. (2) The second point is based on my experience as to how some scientists act (and in the thread, a reply to some of those folks who thought that scientists were humble, as some are--many are not).
It is political but also USSF related... Gaetz is floating bill to force US soccer players to stand. Now it's political theater because there is no way Gaetz's bill makes it to the floor of a Dem House (and he knows it). But FIFA's dislike of government interference in the past may rear its head because they probably would like a chance to take their own shot at the US.
You'd be surprised if you line up the rusty pitchforks and ask for a volunteer, how quickly the line would form.
You're asking for a scientific basis for believing that certain people act in a way that is subjectively determined? You want data on arrogance?
Their statement is boilerplate reiterating things they've previously said. I wouldn't call it trying to pick a fight with the US, USSF, or Trump. I am curious to see how FIFA reacts if someone criticizes China over the Uighurs, or Hong Kong, or Tibet, or threats to Taiwan, or the Chinese troops who crossed the Line of Actual Control into India. My guess is FIFA will shut it down rather than follow their policies on racism or violence.
Well, my late father was a scientist and a great guy. I knew many of his friends and colleagues, and they were generally pretty good people themselves. My career was in a science-related field, and I found that the highly intelligent, credentialed people I knew were far and away more interesting and fun to be around than those of lesser intelligence.
