Two players should be moving up in your list.Aaronson and Richards. Not yet starters but getting there.
Watching Man City today, and I think they're an instructive case for why the obsession with finding THE captain of the USMNT is misplaced. Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Sterling, and Walker (and maybe Aguero?) have all captained the side in games this year. You couldn't pick out one definitive alpha. Yet the team seems to have a high degree of mental toughness as a group. In a group like that (or like the USMNT at the moment, imo), where there is a broad distribution of leadership and accountability, there's no need to artificially elevate one person. Pass the band around between Adams and McKennie and Altidore and Long and Steffen and Pulisic and Lletget and Cannon and others that want it. Denormalize the lionized leader and use the band to emphasize that the whole team is responsible for setting the standard.
Fernandinho is Man City's captain. His powers of motivation were tested early in the campaign when a poor start threatened to derail City’s season before it had even begun. City were in the bottom half of the table with just three wins from their opening eight Premier League matches after a defeat to Tottenham in November. Without Guardiola or his first-team coaches present, Fernandinho delivered a rousing speech to the squad that included a brutal reality check on slipping standards. City used the captain's harsh but inspirational words as a springboard. They haven't been beaten since that setback in north London and are now on a 19-game winning streak in all competitions that has seen them progress in three cup competitions and open up a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League. According to Guardiola, Fernandinho's role in the remarkable revival cannot be underestimated, given his influence over his team-mates. “[Assistant coach] Juanma Lillo said to Fernandinho, 'The locker room and everything that happens must be for you and the captains; we must not be involved,'” the Catalan revealed. "That's why Fernandinho since the beginning was brilliant, on and off the pitch." Those leadership qualities have led to speculation that Fernandinho’s eight-year spell at the club could end in the summer to pave the way for a move into coaching. Goal.com 2/26/2021

I hadn't seen this detailed, but I thought this was interesting for some of the player pool choices: Article: https://www.si.com/soccer/2021/03/24/usmnt-captain-gregg-berhalter-leadership-council
Just wanted to commend you for how thorough your work is on this and the post above it. The sound to noise ratio on the boards can sometimes be a little poor, but it's really useful to have this all in one place, especially for someone who has checked out for a while on following the MNT closely. I'm sure I'll disagree on some of your rankings, and because of the detail I wouldn't begin to know about how accurate some of it is (can't pretend to have watched Alex Borto in action ), but it is very helpful and reinforces my optimism for this group over the next 5 years. Thank you (from a former 12 Bravo).

If anybody wants evidence for why Cristian Roldan would be a valuable backup on a 23-man roster, tonight Sounders match was a perfect example. He set up two goals, cleared a ball off his own line, played effectively as a #10 in place of Nico Lodeiro (even though he's normally a #6), and ran himself ragged all over the pitch while leading the Sounders to a 4-0 win. He's never going to be good enough at any one thing to be a starter for the USMNT, but he could be a very effective Swiss Army knife of a substitute off the bench because of his energy level and all the different positions & roles he can play. I'd take him as a backup over players with more talent but less experience....players who have won as much as he has with the Sounders bring the type of intangibles than any tournament roster needs.

De La Torre with the frontrunner? He has only played once for us and in a friendly. His role at club level has cooled off.
He can always drop. But we need the help in the midfield, I believe he’s continued to do well for club, he impressed in his USMNT showing, and for now, at least, he’s surpassed his competitors. Again, things can always change, but we’ll see.

At this point, your player pool should be down to around 40-50 players in contention for the final 23 spots....here's how I see it, based on who has gotten USMNT playing time in 2020/21: Locks are in bold. GK: Steffen, Horvath, TBD LB: A. Robinson, Vines, Bello, Aruajo CB: Brooks, Long, McKenzie, Richards, Miazga, Zimmerman, Ream RB: Dest, Cannon, Yedlin, Reynolds DM: McKennie, Adams, Acosta, Yueill, Roldan AM: Pulisic, Reyna, Musah, Aaronson, Green Wingers: Morris, Arriola, Weah, Ledezma, Llanez, Konrad Forwards: Sargent, Zardes, Siebatchu, Soto, Gioachinni, Altidore, Dike, Lewis, Ferreira, Mueller, Mihailovic, Lleget So I've got 14 players as locks, and 32 players contending for the final 9 spots. Some people may question my inclusion of Arriola and Zardes as "locks", but given that Brooks will be the only person with World Cup experience, you need some other veterans with big-match experience to balance out all the youngsters. Even if they rarely see the pitch, you need them in the locker room. I'd note that Pulisic, Ream, Acosta, Arriola, Altidore, and Yedlin are the only six players in the current pool who have EVER played an away CONCACAF qualifier (Zimmerman & Morris were in several match day squads during the 2018 cycle and travelled but did not play).
I'd ignore everything from before the pandemic other than the 2019 Gold Cup roster. It's data that is too old and no longer relevant.
