He's better than Sargent as a striker or wing. Sargent is Werder caliber. Morris turned down Werder, then got dramatically better in a multitude of areas, to be beyond their level regardless where he plays now, & has badly out-played Sarge with the NT. We can make a direct comparison at Canada for example, in addition to their production the past couple of years internationally.

The US has issues at striker. It's what Morris would be if not for the circumstance of him getting injured & Seattle buying Ruidiaz to replace him. He solves the problem at striker for the US. Sargent has been more effective at wing actually. But if it's a choice between the two, it's the easiest decision ever made by a US manager whose sole goal is winning.

He's also head & shoulders above every wing but Pulisic & Reyna (who may be better off at 10) right now. KDLF has proven nothing. Ledezma little more & he's far more effective as a 10. Llanez same & he doesn't play defense right now like you need to in the modern game. Musah appears more an 8 or 10, which is what he played w/ the NT. He also has far from committed to the program.

Morris should be a lock in the starting xi now. And projecting out a couple years that has to mean at the very least he could figure in, even if some players do evolve passed him. They should have to take his spot on the xi, let alone bench/roster.

He is not a lock because Reyna is probably or at least possibly ahead of him. We will see where he is in March possibly, maybe in June.

He is one dimensional, so isn't head and shoulders above anyone. There is a place in Berhalter's set up for one dimensional players though. But I think that place is reserved for Zardes.

He might be a better option to start against Mexico than most of the other Ocho opponents. He might be more useful against very good teams than a team like Honduras. So, he might get more use at the World Cup than in Qualifying.

He is a good problem to have but is not a lock. I don't think you can be a lock based on MLS play anymore. KDLF just played in the UCL for Barcelona. Whatever you think of that, if it continues, that is a serious challenge to Morris's relevance.

Just to give you an idea of how young our team is.... players in red will be (most likely ) too old for 2026. Blue they will be past their prime, but still young enough to contend for a spot.

    2022:

    GK:
    Steffen, Turner, Guzan

Steffen is head and shoulders #1 right now. I figure the advanced stats crowd will stamp their feet if Turner isn't on the roster. I feel like you want one guy with big game experience, in case the two newbies can't handle the moment. Guzan will be one of the few players who has even gone to the World Cup. Also seems to be good with the press.

    D
Dest, Reynolds, Brooks, Richards, Otasowie, Ream, Robinson, ?

Dest and (a healthy) Brooks are locks. I worry about Richards' upper body strength but a contributor at Bayern Munich. makes our XXIII. If the strong interest in Reynolds among blue chip clubs is genuine, he gets the nod over Cannon and Araujo and Scally. I take Robinson over Cannon, etc. because you can't teach speed and we don't really have many left footers. Why Ream? Because he can cover two spots mildly inadequately and that gives you an extra center back. The ? stands for some MLSer in the Long spot, and I just don't know who.

    DM
    Musah, McKennie, Adams, Yueill,

McKennie is a lock. On his current trajectory, Musah is a lock if he joins us. Everyone wants to replace Yueill, but he continues to hold the spot, and there's probably a spot for a long switch passer. I'm the only guy on the board who doesn't think Adams is a lock for the 23. But is it that hard to imagine Otasowie or Kayo taking his place? That said, he's such a smart player, and with a young team a smart player is going to be needed.

    Bedoya
    Arriola

This spot is for a guy who vacuums loose balls, locks down a wing on defense, and maybe contributes a little bit going forward. I call it Bedoya. Bedoya could still be the Bedoya. And I thought it might be Morales. But I think Arriola is the leading contender.

    AM
    Pulisic, Reyna, Morris, Aaronson

Pulisic is a lock. Reyna should be a lock, but needs to improve from his debut. The other two spots, as I see it, consist of an MLS veteran spot and a Euro spot. The veteran MLS spot is among Morris, Mueller, Lletget. The Euro spot will be a younger guy among Aaronson, Konrad, Ledezma, maybe Llanez.

    FW:
    Zardes, Sargent, Weah
Zardes and Sargent are close to locks. Weah might be a momentary thing, but it looks like he's finally finding his feet again. He has speed, magic, and he can cover at wing.

Turns out it was not the pool. 18 of the 49 listed are in the pool three years later.

    things have changed dramatically.

In the formation that we are currently playing which is 4-3-3 ...
I don't see 4 of your picks making it.

    Youell, Bedoya, Arriola, Aaronson

Reynolds and Aaronson are barely starting with their clubs. They have a chance but the odds are against them because of time. They would need to hit the ground running.

Because Otosawie can play either midfield or CB. GB may go with 7 defenders instead of 8 and have an extra specialty midfielder or forward.
I would think GB would take Lletget over Bedoya any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
As it stands, I think Weah will be the back up to Pulisic instead of Ariola. Again, because Weah can play more than one position. Morris will probably back up Reyna as a right-winger. The rest of the backup positions are up for grabs. Is Johny better than Youell? We should have a better picture after the next friendly.

    Largely agree on WCQ.

Bedoya is out of the pool. And especially for two years from now.

Weah has looked good, and while I have seen a general role for Arriola at times, I struggle to see what he is going to bring that Weah doesn't at this point. Weah is a good defensive winger AND has a level of athleticism and skill that Arriola can't reach. Healthy, Weah will beat him out, I think.

Not sure about Reynolds, but I think with 2 years to the WC, Aaronson has a real shot at a roster spot.

I don't think GB is going to wait until the very end to have his team set. I think 22 players will be set months before the WC.
Aaronson's competition is Lletget assuming Otasawie has the advantage because he can play more than one position. If GB goes with 7 in the back Aaronson may make it or maybe GB goes with an extra CF besides Sargent and Zardes like Dike or even Nico.
If Reynolds is still playing as an RB then his competition is Cannon, GB likes Cannon a lot, hard for him to switch to an unproven kid.

I still have high hopes for my dark horse...Bryang Kayo. He is the type of midfielder that we don't have. 6'1/170 fast and strong. I wish there was more time but the odds are against him. He would need to get promoted to Wolfsburg this January to have a chance. Rumors are he might but who knows how true those rumors are.

Agree that Reynolds has a hard haul.

I don't think that Berhalter is going to throw someone in a few months before the WC unless they are amazing, but Aaronson has time to go to Salzburg and displace someone like Lletget. He may, he may not, but if by December next year he's a better player, then he'll get in. He's already been introduced and he'll play somewhere this summer in the system.

The keyword is better. If Aaronson is as good as Lletget, GB will go with Lletget.
GB may go with a true CB and drop Otasawie and keep both Aaronson and Lletget. GB sees things differently than most, like using Lletget as a false 9 instead of using a true 9 from his squad.

If Bedoya makes the roster, Berhalter is just trolling us. There’s no reason whatsoever that he should even be considered a contender for even a January Camp. But Berhalter has done some dumb things in the past.

    USMNT Player Pool
    2021 Preview

    GOALKEEPERS

#1 Zack Steffen - the clear cut #1 goalkeeper in our pool. We really need him to stay healthy and in form; or we will be really desperate.

#2 JT Marcinkowski - I don’t think Marcinkowski is our second best keeper, but he’s our only Olympic aged keeper playing anywhere and the rest of the goalkeeper situation is the worst it has ever been in modern USMNT history.

#3 Bill Hamid - Hamid’s career has really not been what we hoped it would be, but he’s one of only a few American keepers playing well anywhere. Plus, Berhalter seems to rate him so he’s in the picture.

#4 Matt Turner - He seems to be a solid MLS keeper, but Berhalter does not seem to rate him. Nonetheless, because of lack of other options, and the fact that he’s youngish, he’s in. Otherwise, Brad Guzan gets the nod because of his experience.

#5 Ethan Horvath - Because he still has potential and no one else has made a case for themselves, Horvath is still a contender. But Horvath really needs to figure things out. He is at high risk of becoming a nobody very quickly.

Comments: Fortunately, Steffen is a good-enough goalkeeper. But we are one player-removed from absolute disaster. All eyes should be on our goalkeeping situation in 2021, and pray that someone finally shows they’re worth a damn.

    Positional Confidence: D-

    RIGHT BACKS:

#1 Sergino Dest - There’s no doubt that Dest is our best fullback. However, because of our depth at right back, and Dest’s versatility, it’s highly likely that Dest will be playing left back for us.

#2 Reggie Cannon - Cannon has quietly had a decent career in Europe and he has consistently been trustworthy for the USMNT. He needs to be careful because he faces a lot of competition at right back. But he should feel confident right now as a rotational starter.

#3 Bryan Reynolds - Alright, I’m promoting him early, but when your transfer value as a fullback gets into the eight digits and clubs like Juventus and Roma want you, you get bumped in the pecking order. Still, he needs to prove he can play at that next level and he needs to force Dest to play on the left - or learn how to play there himself.

#4 DeAndre Yedlin - what the hell happened for Yedlin? He wasn’t spectacular at Newcastle, but I don’t know what he did to be frozen out all together. Fortunately, he seems to reverse that misfortune; although signs point to him moving away from the PL. Still, he’s one of our most experienced defenders and we cannot sneeze at that.

#5 Julian Araujo - Araujo equipped himself well enough to make his case for inclusion. He has an uphill battle, but he’s still very young and very promising.

Comments: Someone is going to have to learn how to play left back. It’s that simple. Right back is now the most competitive position on our team, and even after Dest, Cannon, Reynolds, Yedlin, and Araujo; there’s Tim Chandler, Kyle Duncan, Aaron Herrera, Joe Scally, Shaq Moore, and some others who will want to be included.

    Positional Confidence: A

    LEFT BACKS:

#1 Antonee Robinson - If Dest is starting as a right back, then Antonee is locked in at left back. Right now, the young Jedi has done well in the Premier League and he is deserving of a starting position on our team, although he still has to learn how to be a little more consistent and steady.

#2 Sam Vines - Okay, things fall off after Robinson. Vines has done well enough to be considered a good MLS, CONCACAF, and Olympic aged level defender. But that’s not good enough for where we should want him to be. Nonetheless, because of a lack of other options, here he stands as our number #2 left back - unless we convert someone.

#3 Chase Gasper - Gasper has done well enough to be considered a good MLS level left back. I doubt he’s international quality, but he might do in a pinch with limited responsibility. Because of a lack of reliable options, he’s in the mix. In other words, he’s my guy who you break the glass in case of emergency, but no one is too thrilled that he’s there.

#4 George Bello - Bello’s career has stalled because of injuries. And it doesn’t help that Atlanta United has earned the reputation as the least USMNT friendly club in the world (I’m ashamed of my home team). But Bello is showing signs of maturity. And I’ll say about Bello - he has the potential - to be that next level youth prodigy from MLS, a la Adams and Aaronson. He just needs to prove it this year. If he lives up to the hype, we should all be feeling very good about our fullback situation.

#5 Kyle Duncan - He’s Olympic eligible, he’s done well enough in MLS, and he can play comfortably on the right or left. For those reasons, and because of a lack of other options, Duncan gets the temporary nod for now.

Comments: We have reason to both feel optimistic and worried about left back. In theory, we can play Dest or Robinson there
and feel confident to get a result. But depth is a problem. And it’s not long into the player pool before we start looking to convert or promote players to play the position. I’m also watching Gloster, Kobe, and a few others to see if they’ll make the leap this year. If they do, they will allow us all to breathe a little easier to know we have depth in this squad.

    Positional confidence: C+

    CENTER BACKS

#1 John Brooks - Without a doubt, Brooks is our most esteemed center defender. But for as good as Brooks can be, he can also be guilty of mental lapses and injuries. For this reason, Brooks has always seemed to me more of a luxury defender than a bedrock defender who you look to lead a backline.

#2 Chris Richards - For as worried about Brooks that I am, I feel sure about Richards. He’s getting minutes now for one of the best teams in the world and I believe he could become a world class defender. Still, he’s very young and raw. And it’s one thing to throw a forward into the fire and see what happens... it’s another thing to throw out an unproven center defender. For that reason, Richards still has work to do.

#3 Matt Miazga - Miazga has all the potential in the world, but what’s between the ears has got in his way. Also, he’s not the quickest defender, so it would be essential to pair him with someone who has little faster wheels on them. For these reasons, I’m cautious about Miazga. Still, he’s had a solid year so far for a respectable Anderlecht side.

#4 Aaron Long - Berhalter’s boy. 2020 was not a good year for Long, and I’m worried that his failed move to Europe really set him back. I’m not ready to pull the plug on him yet. He’s got the athletic tools, he’s a solid defender, and he seems to have a good leadership presence. He just needs more experience performing consistently at a high level to justify him being locked into the team. I trust that he’s good enough for CONCACAF, but I’m not sure if he’s ready for the next level.

#5 Walker Zimmerman - pretty much the same story as Long. And where he’s not as fast, he’s stronger and he provides an even more steady leadership presence on the field. Still, he needs to prove he’s better than MLS and CONCACAF, or he could see himself on the outside looking in.

#6 Mark McKenzie - I think McKenzie is a pretty solid center defender. But he needs to go ahead and make his move abroad. Right now, Long and Zimmerman are more reliable than him, and if it came between an MLS defender, he’s on the out. But he’s got the upside of youth. And if he can finalize a good move abroad for a respectable side, he could see himself emerge as a necessary component to this squad.

#7 Erik Palmer-Brown - Honestly, I compare McKenzie and Palmer-Brown about equal, but Palmer-Brown has already done what McKenzie has yet to do: start to earn respect in Europe. That said, Austria Wien isn’t Bayern Munich. And Palmer-Brown should be looking for a greater challenge if he wants to up his game and make a case that he should be one of center defenders.

#8 Kik Piere - Okay, this is where it starts to get interesting. Piere seems to favor the Dutch national team, and his career kind of stalled in 2020. But lately, he’s been turning it back around, and demonstrating the talent that made Ajax take interest in him. Plus, he’s still incredibly young. So, the question will be - can Berhalter successfully recruit Piere? The path to starting for the US is a lot easier than starting for a team that possesses DeLigt, Van Dijk, De Vrij, Botman, and Veltman. So, that’s going for us.

#9 Ventura Alvarado - The forgotten man who has quietly made a decent career for himself in Mexico. I don’t know why Berhalter has ignored him, but in my opinion, he deserves a look - especially because no one has really put their stamp on the position yet.

#10 Tim Ream - Reluctantly, I’m including Ream for now. Berhalter rates him - even if signs are pointing to the death of his career. It helps that he can play left back in a pinch, and that he’s done well enough when he’s played for us. Still, I prefer the younger Carter-Vickers whose time at Bournemouth been stalled by an unfortunate injury. Outside of him, Atlanta is not going to release Miles Robinson (who is not good enough) and the other Olympic eligible defenders: Henry Kessler, Donovan Pines, Mauricio Pineda, and Justen Glad need work. That said, I don’t see a need for him - unless as an emergency left back, but evidently, Berhalter sees differently.

Comments: I’m not very confident about center back. At the moment, we have some reasonable talent making a case for inclusion, but it concerns me that we lack a leadership presence on the backline who has the level of experience we need from him to have. Still, the potential is there. We just need to hope that we see some improvement in 2021.

    Positional confidence: C+

    MIDFIELDERS:

#1 Wes McKennie - Our 2020 player of the year has really taken the next leap forward with his play with Juventus. At this point, I think any rational coach would go ahead and nominate him as the captain of the squad. He’s earned it.

#2 Tyler Adams - Finally getting his career back on track. Adams looks to be the indispensable man next to McKennie. With these two, we look to have one of the best midfield combos we ever had.

#3 Yunus Musah - is he a winger or a midfielder? Valencia says winger but fans say midfielder. Either way, stealing Musah away from England was a huge boost to the US squad.

#4 Owen Otasowie - The bull in the China shop has finally started to get minutes for Wolverhampton. And let me say, we could really benefit by having a physical destroyer and ball winner like Otasowie coming off the bench.

#5 Johnny Cardoso - Johnny is an incredibly young midfielder playing for one of the most storied clubs in Brazil. Right now, he’s an option off the bench, but he could push himself as a starter on the squad if he continues to improve.

#6 Jackson Yuiell - I don’t know if he’s good enough for that next level competition, but Yuiell is the perfect guy for CONCACAF with his deep-lying playmaking skills. Personally, I expect Yuiell to be that guy who is an important part of qualifying, but who gets cut when it comes time to the final 23. Still, I wouldn’t count him out entirely. He just needs to improve his defense, his athleticism, and get more experience.

#7 Darlington Nagbe - Okay, so I’m still holding out for Nagbe. But in my opinion, there is no other American player in MLS who is at the level that he’s at. He is a champion wherever he goes, and that’s for a reason. He is world class at helping teams maintain possession of the ball. In this regard, he might be considered a bit of a luxury player, but there’s about no one else that I think could help this team as a luxury player like Nagbe.

#8 Fredo Morales - the last man listed and it’s a head scratcher. There’s a lot of other options - James Sands, Kelyn Acosta, Eryk Williamson, Chris Durkin, Bryang Kayo, Tanner Tessman, Paxton Pomykal, Christian Cappis, Andres Perea, and Frankie Amaya, (not to mention the guys who have proven to not be good enough - Cristian Roldan, Wil Trapp, and Michael Bradley). But Fredo is another luxury player who I like for this team. He brings tenacity and experience. And even though he’s not the first name I want to see on the team sheet, I see a role for him in the daunting places in CONCACAF in 2021.

Comments: I’m a little worried about our depth, but with the emergence of young talents Musah, Johnny, and Otasowie, I’m starting to feel more and more confident about our midfield. That said, I feel very confident with McKennie-Adams bossing teams around in 2021.

    Positional confidence: B+

    PLAYMAKERS:

#1 Gio Reyna - Gio has emerged as one of our most important players, even if he has yet to prove it for the USMNT. The upside of Reyna is that we can finally move Pulisic to his preferred left wing position.

#2 Brenden Aaronson - I could not be higher on Aaronson. He’s extremely quick and agile and I think the sky is the limit for his career. I don’t know if there’s room for him to start, but he’s exactly the type of super sub we want to bring off the bench.

#3 Sebastian Lletget - Lletget has consistently been one of the best USMNT performers, and even though I think his spot in the 23 is in jeopardy due to intense competition, we need him to take on a leadership role for this very young team.

#4 Richard Ledezma - Man, his injury is so unfortunate. Ledezma was emerging at PSV as a first team player, and he’s also been the kind of guy who produces every time he stepped on the field. I don’t know if he can rebound in time for the 2022 cycle, but he’s so young that I still expect big things from him at some point. For 2021, I just hope he has a speedy recovery and he picks up where he left off.

#5 Julian Green - quietly, Julian Green has turned into a solid pro in the 2.Bundesliga. Still there are questions about his limited athletic ability. But he’s got the skill and flair, that if he was called in, I could envision him producing for us.

#6 Cole Bassett - With Pomykal’s injury history, Bassett has emerged in MLS as one of the most important playmaking prospects. Bassett really needs to turn it up a notch in 2021. He has the ability to do so. And even though things are crowded as they are; he could breakout as a player we need to get into the rotation.

#7 Gianluca Busio - Like Bassett, Busio is one of our most important prospects. Still incredibly young, Busio should be expected to produce in 2021 and should start entertaining offers for Europe very soon. At this point, like Bassett, his career could go either way: either stud or dud.

Comments: Aside from Lletget, we’re relying heavily on a lot of young faces to be the creative force of this team. But some of those young faces are really starting to break through on the world scene. Meanwhile, there’s some others who are still very young - such as Alex Mendez, Djordje Mihailovic, Jesus Ferreira, Anthony Fontana, and Luca de la Torre - but their prospects are not as bright.

    Positional confidence: A-

    WINGERS:

#1 Christian Pulisic - Pulisic needs to get healthy and stay healthy. His injury history is really starting to burden his career. And he is no longer the teenage phenom he once was. Now, he’s expected to be the leader and main producer of this team. In other words, if Pulisic does not run away with player of the year in 2021, because he excelled in every game, he should feel very disappointed in himself.

#2 Tim Weah - We should all be so grateful that Weah has recovered from his injuries and has continued his trajectory as an elite level international player. That said, I don’t know if Weah needs to play on the wing or at CF for us, but he’s definitely making the case that he should be in the XI regardless.

#3 Jordan Morris - I don’t know of a player in the USMNT pool that has more of a cult following than Jordan Morris. That said, I argue that he’s on the inside, but he needs to up his game, or he risks being surpassed by a lot of hungry youth prospects. Aside from that, like Weah, I don’t know if he’s best at CF or wing, but he’s likely to feature in both positions in 2021.

#4 Konrad de la Fuente - Budding as a rotational player for FC Barcelona, there’s no way that Konrad misses out if he can take his game to that next level. Still, he has a lot of work to do. But he seems to rise to every challenge in front of him.

#5 Chris Mueller - Mueller has quietly became a consistent and reliable performer in MLS. After an excellent showing in his first cap, Mueller should be looking to build on his career in 2021. That said, I think his ceiling is limited, and I don’t know if he’ll ever be better than MLS/CONCACAF. Still, he might prove to be a key player for us in qualifying.

#6 Paul Arriola - Arriola seems to have recovered well from his unfortunate ACL injury. Nonetheless, there is arguably no other player that screams - probably will never be better than MLS/CONCACAF, but he will bust his ass off every game and run until his heart gives out. And it’s that heart that he possesses, the reason that he might prove to be a very important player in 2021.

#7 Uly Llanez - Llanez has done well in his USMNT appearances but his club story does not look good. Even though he’s still very young, he should be getting on the field and producing for Heerenveen. But he’s not doing so. I’m worried about that. And afraid if he doesn’t turn it up a notch in 2021, we might soon forget about Uly Llanez.

#8 Efrain Alvarez - Did Berhalter successfully persuade Alvarez to switch to the US? Obviously, I hope so. But let me cast a dark omen on Alvarez. Personally, I predict that he flounders in MLS and never reaches the level of his hype. I just don’t see what all the fuss is about. Still, I hope he chooses the US and I hope he does well for us.

#9 Tyler Boyd - I’d be furious if I was Boyd - stuck in purgatory at Besiktas. Nonetheless, chances are high that we’ve seen the last of Boyd. Not many players can rebound from where he’s at. But what Boyd does have in his favor is that he’s still youngish and he’s already demonstrated he can be a producer. Stranger things have happened than to see someone like Boyd turn things around and become a productive player.

#10 Emmanuel Sabbi - There’s a lot of difference of opinion on Sabbi. Some say he’s not good enough. Meanwhile, I’ll argue on his behalf that he’s a physical freak who is still Olympic eligible and producing at a decent enough level in Denmark to get noticed. I don’t think he’ll ever become a key player for us. But I could see him working his way into being a speedy option off the bench that manages to do good things.

Comments: Wing is a lot like forward - it’s a matter of what you’re doing now, not what you have done for me. In other words, there’s a lot of opportunity for a flavor of the month to earn an opportunity to make his way into the team. Aside from that... At this point, I think we’ll see Pulisic and Weah running the wings with Morris as the first option off the bench. Also, eyes are peeled on Konrad de la Fuente to force his way into the picture. Meanwhile, we still might need to rely on some MLS lifers (Arriola and Mueller) to come up big for us in 2021. Lastly, I haven’t forgotten about Caden Clark and Duane Holmes who could play a role - not to also forget about Alex Mighten, Sebastian Saucedo, Nick Taitague, Jonathan Amon, Cade Cowell, Cameron Harper, Indy Vassilev, Jonathan Lewis, Lynden Gooch, Memo Rodriguez, and Corey Baird who will be competing for time.

    FORWARDS:

#1 Josh Sargent - Our top forward needs to start producing for club and country. I know he’s young, but the pressure is on. He has to start consistently scoring goals. He has improved the rest of his game. And because of a lack of legitimate competition, he should feel confident.

#2 Gyasi Zardes - Let me be clear: Gyasi Zardes isn’t my second choice striker. But if no one else steps up this year, I imagine Berhalter is going to revert back to what he knows... Gyasi Zardes. If that’s the case, we should all be worried about qualifying, because I don’t know if Zardes is even up for CONCACAF.

#3 Haji Wright - Quietly, Haji Wright has started to turn into a solid forward in Denmark. I know that’s not the level we need our center forward to be, but it’s a start. If he keeps scoring, he should get a look. That said, he needs to learn how to be more physically imposing in games and score when the opportunity presents itself.

#4 Daryl Dike - Dike had a very good rookie year for Orlando where he demonstrated the potential to be the Romelu Lukaku (light) version of this team. I don’t know yet what his ceiling is, but if he builds off 2020, we should be hopeful.

#5 Niko Gioacchini - Scoring 2 goals in your debut is going to get you noticed. Still, the French second division is not good enough for where we need him to be. He needs to prove he can produce in Ligue 1 or a similar league. That said, he’s earned another look.

#6 Sebastian Soto - Similarly, scoring 2 goals in your debut will get you noticed. Also similarly, playing in the Dutch second division is not good enough.

#7 Andrija Novakovich - What the hell is up with all our best strikers playing in the second divisions? Someone needs to take their game to the next level. Of the bunch, Novakovich seems the most consistent for his club. But unlike the others, he’s months too old for the Olympics which cuts his opportunities to impress.

#8 Matthew Hoppe - I know Schalke is going to hell in a hand basket, but Hoppe has emerged as a rotational player for them. Because of a lack of other options, that might be enough to earn a cap. Still, we want to see him get on the score sheet and become the type of player that can rise to be a quality international player.

#9 Ayo Akinola - Flirting with Canada knocks him down a bit, even though he did score in his NT debut. At this point, I’d say Wright-Gioacchini-Soto-Hoppe-Akinola-Dike are all about tied. One just needs to catch fire. And in Ayo’s case, commit.

#10 Folarin Balogun - There’s some other possibilities. Jozy could return to form. Aron can stay healthy and keep producing. Pepi could continue his breakout. Kelman could become a regular for QPR. Sanogo could emerge as a star for Union Berlin. And Koffi, Efford, and Ebobisse could still breakthrough. But right now, Balogun is a head of all them. If he commits, and he finally becomes a regular for Arsenal - or manages a successful move away - where he’s scoring and producing... Balogun could quickly rise in these charts. Still, he’s more of a raw prospect at the moment.

Comments: We need someone to start scoring goals for club and country. We need Josh Sargent to start producing. We need goal scorers. Otherwise, we are going to have all this attacking talent, and no one who can do anything with it.

    Positional confidence: C+

    I like your list.
I just make a remark on Balogun, he is 5'10 and only 148 lbs. I don't think he is strong enough to handle international CBs. I think his future is more in the ACM position.

I’ll have to add Josh Cohen to the list. A 1992 goalkeeper playing for Maccabi Haifa. Right now, our only keeper starting in Europe.

I’ve been working on updating the player pool again. I wanted to go through the u-20 players, and also through the USL-C and USL-1 to scour potential youth prospects.

But before I post the updated player pool. I want to post the key on the player’s categories...

Note: Bold players represent players who are on the shortlist of a USMNT call-up. This includes primarily the Frontrunners and Contenders. Also, it includes the Elite Prospects and Promising Prospects who might get a shot to prove themselves.

Note: All Olympic-aged players have an asterisk by their birth year.

Note: The age in parenthesis is the player’s age on June 1, 2022. (out of convenience, I am not going to adjust the date to the WC 2022).

Note: the player positions is based on a 4-3-3 formation. This seems to be Berhalter’s most preferred line-up, so I’m sticking to that formation. There is the goalkeeper, right back, left back, (2x) center backs, (2x) midfielders, playmakers, (2x) wingers, and forward. The midfielders are the 6 & 8 player position. And the playmaker is the 8 & 10 player position. I don’t differntiate between left and right center backs nor do I for left or right winger due to the interchangeable nature of those positions. However, because fullbacks tend to stick to their side of the field; I do differntiate between left and right.

Note: I appreciate when I receive feedback to make a correction. It takes a lot of work to keep up with all these players, and the feedback helps me compile this list and keep it updated.

Note: I try my best to rate players based on the coach’s preference, what the data supports, and what fans say about the player. Although it’s impossible to avoid my own bias, I try not to make that the main deciding factor on where a player rates.

    Okay, so the categories....

-Frontrunner: A trustworthy, international-level player who should feel secure about his position in the 23, and is likely to start.

-Contender: A player who is competitive to secure a spot in the 23, and maybe even start, under some circumstances. This player still has work to do, as other players can easily take his spot. But these are the main players besides the frontrunners to earn minutes for the senior team.

-Pretender: These tend to be first team players, usually in leagues equivalent to MLS, and they might receive a random call-up to fill out a roster, but they have a very slim chance of making the final cut. Pretenders should be competitive for the January Camp and other times when the player pool is stretched thin. Also, expect Pretenders to become Contenders with a good streak, and Contenders to become Pretenders when they’re in poor form.

-Longshot: These players tend to be first team players, who are very unlikely to ever receive a call-up (even for a January Camp). In MLS and equivalent leagues, they tend to be squad players and not anyone special. Nonetheless, it’s still worth it to keep an eye on these players because if they hit a hot streak they could sneak up the charts. But don’t count on that anytime soon.

-Doghouse: At this point, I quit following a player unless their name pops up (so I’m sorry if there are a lot of errors). Often, they’re retired, out of a club, or simply just buried so far on the bench that they are forgotten. I normally don’t delete players because #1 in rare circumstances a player will dig himself out of the doghouse and #2 to measure the players who fall from grace in the World Cup cycle.

-Elite Prospect: This is an Olympic eligible player who has not yet broken out, nor pushed their way into the 23 discussion, but they project to have a very high ceiling. This spot is reserved for only the most hyped youngsters (who have yet to break through the glass ceiling onto the national team).

-Promising prospect: Most of our top Olympic-aged players should find themselves in this category. These players probably don’t have the biggest clubs in the world knocking on their door, but they still project to have very respectable careers and to be competitive to make it onto the national team. Note - these players are typically a little more polished than a very promising u-17 prospect and closer to a national team call.

-Fringe Prospect: These Olympic-aged players may or may not make it, but signs are that they are on track to at least be a player good enough to make it in MLS or an equivalent league. Also, this group includes highly touted players, who are in that high school age where it’s hard to tell their trajectory, but they seem to be on the right track. So, expect to find the best u-17 players who have yet to become first team players in this group, and who might have to wait until the next cycle to contend for a spot. Also, expect to find the older Olympic-aged players who seem to be buried on the depth chart, but still seem to be a respectable player.

-Outlook: These Olympic-aged players tend to be players who are starting to emerge on the scene, or they were once hyped young players who seem to be struggling with their club team. Unlike the fringe prospects - who could contend for a spot with the senior team this cycle, these players are unlikely to feature until next cycle - even if they will play for the youth teams.

-Dreamers: These Olympic-aged players are either #1 your older Olympic-aged players who have fizzled out and seem to be in the discussion of ‘they didn’t make it’; OR, #2 they’re so young and/or unproven that I am unable to predict their trajectory. Nonetheless, all these players are young enough to still dream that they can make it on the senior team, some day.

Notts County have signed a left-back who was released by League Two Oldham. Have asked the club about US eligibility. :p

Liverpool have signed two defenders to fill their defensive gap. Aaron Long isn't one of them.

    Eleven Bravo repped this.
