    • Williams is "potential to move to a higher level" simply by returning from injury and getting in the rotation rather than moving to a better club.
    • I don't think any dual national should consider permanently joining the USMNT now given how early it is in the cycle. If Siebatcheu determines that he's not going to make the French team, he'd be well-advised to consider the USMNT if not for the opportunity to come to MLS on the backside of a national team career.
    • You may be right wrt Chandler, especially given his age, but I think that would be a mistake. He's a high ceiling player and we need more of those.

    • Corona/Tijuana (248)
    A Level Top 600 (Yikes)
    • Kevin Lankford/St. Pauli (426)

club rank by 538 [exact ranking doesn't really matter but broadly works]

Green = potential to rise to higher level
Red = risk of falling to a lower level or getting benched
Italics = American born/raised outside of the US, whose USMNT success apparently indicates that the US' "developmental system fails to produce good players"

I hope Ream moves from Fulham when they are relegated. He is a lone bright spot on that squad. Really good one v one on the tackle.

I'm not so sure. Watch the highlight reel, he was responsible for the 2nd goal scored on Fulham last match.

They really love him there.... but he completely choked against Equador in the 2nd half. Had his pocket picked and should have resulted in a great chance at a goal. Luckily, Equador just seemed compeltely out of sorts w/ respect to offense.

For those of you who missed Tyler Adams dominate again against Berlin this past weekend.... here is a video of his amazing 75 yard assist:

    https://the18.com/soccer-news/tyler-adams-assist-vs-hertha-berlin

They also list several of the advanced stats that are finally being used around the league to describe players that are not strikers. Perhaps the most important... RB Leipzig is undefeated with Adams in the lineup. 7 wins and 3 draws since the end of January when Adams broke into the starting 11.

    Here are the stats:

    1 assist
    85 touches
    67/76 (88%) passes
    4/8 long balls
    7/9 duels won
    3 aerials won
    8 recoveries
    3 tackles
    1 interception
    11.39 kM distance covered
26 sprints#RBLeipzig still unbeaten with him in the lineup. #RBNY still struggling without him.#USMNT

Adams is the best American player in the world right now. You should watch him play on Tuesday on ESPN News in the German Cup Quarter Finals.

    Here's a completely subjective question:

Based on whatever standard you have for how good you expect or want the team to be in Qualifying and hopefully the World Cup, what players in the complete pool are currently meeting that standard in your opinion?

Don't worry about factoring age into it, and don't project improvement in the future -- just if qualifying started today, which players are you completely happy with their ability? As opposing to just the best option we have.

Some surprises: Joe Gyau, Miles Robinson, and the fact that McKennie's middle name is James Earl.

    Cue the imperial march.

Yeah, I actually like Robinson. I meant to type Marlon Fossey, I think, but was honestly just excited over the James Earl element that I screwed it all up.

Kik might get a cold shower with his American birth, as for some reason the VSA deems people born in the VSA and not registering for a tax number as criminals and threaten Dutch banks with hundreds of millions punishment if they give those people a bank account or financial services like a mortgage. Most of those born as a kid in the VSA never knew they had that nationality too, until they got a threatening letter from their banks to get asap an American tax number or their bank accounts and their mortgages would end.

@Eleven Bravo and @DHC1 , thanks for putting all that work in! It's interesting to see where people are on the team, and who everyone is comfortable with / trust.

I don't think you'd believe it, given my general lack of panic with call-ups, but I think I actually trust fewer players than either of you.

For me, it simply comes down to Pulisic, Adams, McKennie, Brooks, Jozy, Miazga and maybe Yedlin and Sargent for me. Fabian would likely make it if he had been healthy for the last couple of years.

It's a thin list. I think our talent level is pretty terrible in the "prime" years across the board. It neither has top end talent nor depth.

I'm interested to see if this younger generation can create both the high end talent (and Pulisic, McKennie and Adams are a GREAT start) but also the depth.

Lack of depth and the injuries that made it an issue were as big a part of 2018 as anything.

Compared to the best in the world, we are weak but compared to historical USMNT teams, this squad (and the last) is far deeper and has no players below the Ralston line.

I’m guessing you’re younger than me and don’t remember directly how poor the low end of our pool was yet we were always able to punch above our weight.

There’s no question in my mind that we are far deeper with decent (although not good by international standards) players and that’s primarily due to MLS.

The last cycle was missing top end players but hopefully Pulisic is leading a new wave.

Btw, given your assessment of the pool, I think it’s highly naive to want to play an aspirational possession style. Style doesn’t matter - only the scoreboard does.

I don’t care about your opinion (not meant derogatorily towards you just that you’re not the coach) but the fact that our coach wants to do that without having elite players is lunacy. Even worse is if he thinks he has the players to do that.

You have to be able to play both ways. We are in the CONCACAF and need to be able to handle our business just to get into the tourney. As such, you will be playing a lot of clubs that have less talent than us and will likely serve the counter-attack role... low block... tons of guys in the box etc... They need to be able to beat that style consistently and not allow another TT debacle like in the last cycle.

When they face more talented teams they need to be able to switch roles.... prevent goals and make the most of counter-attack opportunities.

This seems like a solution in search of a problem. We have had to face low level CONCACAF opponents for decades and our challenge hasn't been beating bunkering teams. Look at our home games vs. lesser teams (where they are most likely to bunker): we easily outscored them.

Wrt T&T, the issue wasn't that we weren't able to possess the ball, we had a significant advantage there. Our problem was that we gave up goals while trying to play attractive possession soccer and T&T took advantage of us.

We need to get back to winning at home vs. Mexico and Costa Rica - the new strategy doesn't help us do that at all.

Well... what do you suggest? In the end, I still think the gameplan needs to be adaptable... and that the quality of the players is far more indicative of success.

I believe in building around core players and retaining what has traditionally been the USMNT’s strength - a highly organized defense coupled with athletic and speedy attackers who can punish less organized defenses irrespective of whether or not they bunker.

I think that relying on a possession game is particularly difficult in away CONCACAF venues given the crappy field conditions and brutish opponent behavior that doesn’t get called by the refs. Therefore, I’d focus on aerial play and winning direct/corner kicks in dangerous areas.

Again, the skill of our players should be more than enough to beat the vast majority of teams in the CONCACAF. The blame for the TT debacle was largely on the guys on the field. I don't understand what it means to focus on aerial play? A good team should be able to cash in on set pieces regardless of the overall style of play.

I can certainly understand why you would want to go back to a more defensive style of play though... Trying to get cute by playing the ball out of the back consistently will result in opposing goals when the correct pressure is applied... but if the squad plays the same way all the time then it is easy for opposing teams to gameplan against them. I am in favor of mixing it up according to the team we are playing and being able to adjust said scheme in the middle of a game when necessary.

I don’t think we have to be overly defensive but rather we should be designed to be well organized at all times. We should still have majority possession in most CONCACAF games and can still flood the midfield (as long as we communicate and don’t rely on poor defenders).
