As i implied in my previous post Curacao's bribe money just ran out and Canada's didn't. The ref and the VAR was horrible.
Yes yes, I remember that semi-final vs Jamaica. For comparison, Eloy Room got to carry the ball out into the D, vs. Brad Guzan dropkicks the ball at the edge of the box...
@dark knight could you edit "USMNT Gold Cup Discussion" into the title? That's what I meant this for. Should have specified. Then a separate thread could be started for non USMNT matches.
The general USMNT talk that isn't specific to 1 game gets crowded out by talk about other teams in the tourney, and vice versa. Traditionally it's been separated and worked better.
Again I disagree. There is already the individual match threads for the USMNT. Why do we need, or want, more? And I do NOT agree it worked better before. It was not better, just different.
Canada is hilarious. Jesse Marsh starts the tournament in a booth, spews machismo and braggadocio, gets slapped, then they produce a laughable result. Pretty funny to watch this hoccer team flail about.
MEX v CRC getting spicy. I appreciated the all-women reffing crew in the early game; seemed to temper the conca.
The US would be underdogs against either of these teams if they asked me. So much more turning on the ball and good running.
CR will be tough... but they will be missing their leading scorer Ugalde .... not sure if anyone else earned a suspension tonight
Costa Rica will be missing four regular starters. Forward Manfred Ugalde, who has three goals in the tournament, and midfielder Carlos Mora are suspended for yellow-card accumulation. Defender Ariel Lassiter has a fractured left hand and forward Warren Madrigal a broken left leg. https://www.espn.com/soccer/report/_/gameId/735337
If navas plays out of his mind again yeah, it will be a long day for the US. It took a 'golazo" (I know it was called off) to get past him By mexico.
Mexico has only scored one goal from the run of play against Suriname, CR, and DR, so maybe they are not the best judge of whether it will be so difficult to score?
yet their place at the top of their group shows maybe its best not to judge a team based on one aspect of the game?
I do not think De La Torre will make the WC cut this time. There is too much competition and he does not advance the ball. No special qualities.
I can't understand why it was offsides. The CR player hit the ball that Gimenez scored on! I guess to ensure you're "onside" you'll have to make sure you're onside for the pass before the final pass, just to be sure...
The law basically says that you are offside if you are in an offside position when the pass is made and deflections do not matter. That is deflections do not impact any offside determination.
The rule on this is so poorly written that you can drive a truck through the differences in interpretation. It starts out by saying offside is reset by a "deliberate" play on the ball by the defense, and that header was clearly intentional. This isn't an accidental deflection. But then a sentence or two later, it talks about controlling the ball, which is a completely different level of interaction, and even mentions this is hard to do in the air (which does leave open the possibility of control with a header, so?). So it's a deliberate play for sure ... but not really controlling the ball, just hitting it. They aren't even really intentional in which way it goes. So that's offside ... or not? Good ol' FIFA rules. Can't just pick one.
