With four weeks until the Jamaica matches (Nov 14 & 18), perhaps we should take an inventory of our injured players. Would someone care to create a list?
Adams in training Weah in training Wiley in training McKennie late October Richards late October Balogun December Dest January Reyna January Cardoso? De La Torre? Paredes?
Carter-Vickers too, but Celtic hoped to have him back after the international window. And I'm assuming the players you haven't mentioned who were ruled out for the Mexico game at some point after the Panama game (Steffen, McKenzie, Fossey, and Pepi) all have very minor injuries, if that, but I'll just note those 4 for now for the sake of completeness.
the whole situation will be a repetitive framework ... get some players healthy ... integrate and train and evaluate ... get more players healthy ... integrate and train and evaluate ... lather rinse repeat .... it will be like this for the next 12 months ... it could actually work very nicely in the build up to the big dance .... 1. Poch will get his full assessment done (some fringe players get their chance to prove their worth to him .... or not) 2. Poch will get the whole squad training and playing the way he likes 3. the club teams will appreciate how Poch understands their needs and demands 4. over time we will get our A squad fully healthy (will Gio and Tyler ever be 100% is a big concern as is - and who will our keeper be?) .... I think it will just require patience from the US fan base .... and alot of travel from Poch .... these injuries don't happen overnight and they don't get resolved overnight ... patience is key.
I have a gut feeling that if this past window was REALLY critical, a bunch of guys would have been there. Johnny seems like he's just being rested. CCV has a toe issue. Weah will be on the bench this next game for Juve. In need of some good news, there is some.Tyler Adams and Tim Weah will return from injury right after the October international break, and should be available for their next club matches (Adams vs Arsenal & Weah vs Lazio). pic.twitter.com/89UMbDTnaA— USMNT Otaku 🇺🇸 (@USMNTOtaku) October 16, 2024
Diego Kochen will be back sooner than anticipated. https://t.co/TyRP8Nujqr— barcacentre (@barcacentre) October 15, 2024
NEWS: Bournemouth midfielder and #USMNT international Tyler Adams has returned to fitness and could feature against Arsenal on Saturday.“He has trained very well. He is ready.”More details:https://t.co/eM4bVlHpFw— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) October 18, 2024 May this return not be ended quickly with another injury.
Tim Weah is available for Juventus-Lazio this weekend after an ankle injury kept him out of #USMNT duty, Thiago Motta confirmed. Weston McKennie won't be risked, but should be available for Champions League against Stuttgart next week. pic.twitter.com/Asy6Y24D7c— Larry Henry Jr (@lhenry019) October 18, 2024
I mentioned this in another thread, but considering all of Adams' injuries, some people might be surprised to learn just how consistently he's been available in competitive fixtures for the US over the past 4 years. He's been available for 10 out of the last 13 competitive international windows (not counting B-Team Gold Cups). The 3 he missed were all in 2023. And he's started 22 out of 33 competitive A-team games in that 4 year period. By my count, he is one of only 6 USMNT players that have started two-thirds of our competitive games in that period. (The other 5 are Pulisic, McKennie, Jedi, Turner, and Musah. Jedi's 28 competitive starts make him the most consistent starter in that group by a decent margin.) On the other hand, it does seem at times that his push to make himself available for the bigger national team games has contributed to his overall injury issues. Especially this year, he has been available for both competitive international windows we've had this year (and may very well make it 3 for 3 soon), but it seems like his push to make that happen has contributed significantly to the injuries that have ruled him out for almost every Bournemouth games this year.
118 minutes is crazy 🇺🇸 Tyler Adams available for selection this weekend for the first time this season, Bournemouth announcedAdams has played only 118 Premier League minutes for Bournemouth since joining in the summer of 2023Hopefully a run of fitness upcoming 🤞🏼 pic.twitter.com/gVGbubFLwE— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) October 18, 2024
In the last World Cup cycle, he played in 13 of our 14 World Cup qualifiers, started 12 of them and played 90 minutes in seven of them. At the World Cup itself, he played 90 minutes in all four games.
The last World Cup cycle was two-to-four years ago. That was back when Gio Reyna was in his prime, Pulisic was a wingback, and Tim Ream was only in his mid-30s. Times have changed.
Berhalter called Adams in all the time when he had fitness question marks, and he often delivered. That's why he kept doing it. Like when he hadn't played in forever, came into the Nations League this past spring, and scored a bomb of a winner against Mexico in the final. Adams, lest we forget, was USMNT captain. He captained every game at the World Cup. I know we had that "leadership council." When it mattered the most, though, it was Adams who was captain. And yes, the captain is sometimes given special treatment. Is leaned on a little more than others.
You were implying that Adams was called in when he was "not fit to play much, if at all". If that were the case, how did he play all those 90-minute games?
So what's the threshold if you are going to call a player with limited minutes. Only the World Cup? The Copa seemed sort of important.
There's a balance between playing 90 and getting injured from overuse and being a little more tactical on when to give those minutes. To be fair to GB the team has only recently found more players who are or near ready to help out at defensive mid. A few years back Acosta was the main backup.
Weah played today for Juve. Came on in the 54th minute. He's excited. We're excited to get one guy back.............. No McKennie as expected. [1-0 win over 10-man Lazio] Tim Weah was fired up. 🔥🔥🔥[🎥: @juventusfcen] pic.twitter.com/oIYSwMM8or— USMNT Otaku 🇺🇸 (@USMNTOtaku) October 19, 2024
Johnny Cardoso started for Real Betis today, so that one is also off the list. [2-1 over Osasuna] 💚🤍💚¡Nuestro once inicial para el #OsasunaRealBetis!#DíaDeBetis pic.twitter.com/tvhesV3j1h— Real Betis Balompié 🌴💚 (@RealBetis) October 19, 2024
Patience Weah is back Adams was on the bench Jonny is back Three in one week perhaps Wes in 2 weeks Gio in a few more I hope tick tock tick tock
A couple that didn't play yesterday that we thought were close to a return. Cameron Carter-Vickers didn't play. He has a toe thing, and is just nagging apparently. Wiley didn't get in the 18 for Strasbourg, although is apparently in training. Good thing. They got absolutely demolished by PSG. He didn't have surgery or anything. Being rested with some knee tendonitis.
