Thanks for the link, that line up looks pretty solid.
I see Pablo didn't miss this call up? Hanki must have been asleep when the phone rang :D

Not that it means anything but for the first time in a long time Convey is listed as a mid not a defender. Interesting to see that Gavin gets a well deserved call up (Convey's call up against Brazil)

Looks like Arena is going to field a strong side. At least with Convey out - Gros starts. I think we'd all like to see him get more playing time.

Also, what's the deal with Zavagnin? Why is Arena so high on him?

Being that it's only a friendly, I'd guess that Bruce figures there's no reason to take Walker or another keeper away from an MLS team just to ride the pine. This gives Thornton someplace to train while he looks for work, and if Bruce feels like giving him a half, it gets him some exposure.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was very impressed with Zavagnin in the pre-world cup qualifiers. He seamed to show good judgement and above average skills. A poor mans Reyna if you will.

Don't Release Convey for July 11

From today's Washington Post: "Midfielder Bobby Convey was named to the U.S. national team roster for the July 11 friendly against Poland in Chicago."

I am one of Convey's biggest fans, but this is getting ridiculous. It's time for DCU/MLS/Kevin Payne to say no to Bruce.

World Cup Qualifier - fine, miss a DCU game or two.

Friendly during a key stretch for the team leading up the All-Star break - No thanks.

Now, I'm assuming that Convey will miss DCU's game on the 10th. If he's going to play for us then head to Chicago then I guess I can live with that (as stupid as that sounds).

I dont think that sounds stupid. I think I see where you are coming from (I am guessing you think Bobby being called up all the time is hurting DCU -- which I think is probably true).

Sorry but even as a ardent Bobby appoligist I have to disagree. I have made my fellings clear on club versus country. If he is going to spend time playing left back for the Nats he needs every chance he can to get game action back there. Gros is more than a sutable sub for one road match in KC. Besides every game Gros gets helps him when Bobby is called in for full World Cup Qualifiers later in the season.

Re: Don't Release Convey for July 11

DC United cannot force Convey to stay. They can hold him until 48 hours before the friendly but as DC doesn't play a game during that time, I don't see the point. The US National Team has the leverage from FIFA to do this. If DC refuses to let him go, Convey would be unavailable for league matches - see sanctions against Mark Viduka as an example.

Re: Don't Release Convey for July 11

That all depends on whether July 11 is a FIFA sanctioned date. It may be, but i haven't checked whether it is or not. Can someone tell us, and end all of the debate?

Remember what happened last time somebody tried to do this to Arena? Its just not worth it.

Also, didn't there used to be a rule about Clubs being allowed to deny friendly call ups a certain number of times per year? I seem to remember that. Is it history?

exactly, I think DCU can cover for Convey a lot better than KC can cover for Josh Wolff

Re: Don't Release Convey for July 11

As far as I can tell, July 11 is not a FIFA sanctioned date. Thus, DCU is under no obligation to release Convey, correct?

Re: Don't Release Convey for July 11

I hope DCU releases Convey for the game. Gros is more than capable to start in his place and the experience earned will more than help later in the season when Convey is gone for the Qualifiers.

Yeah, I know this is a similar post to one earlier in this thread but my sentiments are exactly the same.
