I didn't see an Austin thread so let me know if this should be posted at another location. I caught the story at the BS home page that the possible venues for the US World Cup bids that Austin and DKR are a possible host site. http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_13762562.html I know its probably unlikely but that would be great. Anyone from Austin going to be in Chicago for the USMNT v Honduras match on June 6th? That would be a fun weekend. trip.http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_13762562.html
If I'm able to see a World Cup match at DKR, then I could die. Of course DKR would look like this by then, and it will probably be the largest capacity stadium in North America @ 115,000! UT should F#cking persue the Sh!t out of this opportunity. I mean, can you imagine how big it would be for UT, Austin, and our Aztex. If it's going to be the largest stadium in North America, then it should be were the final is played. Or at least semi-final. I'm trying not to get excited about this because the odds of it happening are very little.
Like, zero. ...unless some of those bottom rows of seats on the sides can be removed to allow a FIFA/WC-width pitch. And they'd be willing to replace the FieldTurf they're about to put down with real grass. Of course, any US World Cup is still 9-13 years away, so anything could happen by then, I suppose. But, considering how stingy UT is with letting any non-UT event sully their soccer/track stadium, I think the odds are pretty close to zero that they'd let any soccer players set cleat one on their hallowed football shrine.
Thank you for bursting my bubble. Better sooner than later before I become obsessed with this for the next 10 years. But this is the World Cup we are talking about. Probably the biggest event on the planet. The isn't the same thing as Mexican league friendlies at Myers. And if the money could match the prestige of the tournament, UT just might try to work something out for a change. If they were to let anyone use their stadium, it would either be for this or the Superbowl. But realistically, I agree with you. Knowing how anal UT is and how much pride they have about longhorn football, they would probably spit any offer from Fifa.
I also read somewhere that WC bids required chair back seating. DKR is 90% bleacher/terrace seating. Between the turf and the chair backs, I don't see UT making a serious run at this.
For this reason they will have to consider and debate being a host site. It is more than just UT, they will have pressure from the community leaders because it will bring more tourism dollars than any event Austin has seen. It is discussed in this article in the Statesman. http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_13762562.html Having said all of that, it is a long shot. I do think has Austin has a chance, since DKR is on the list.
You're welcome. And, I guess it does say something that the newspaper found it worth writing an article about. And it's nice that we happened to have a USL team in town, and that they were aware enough of it to contact Phil to get his take.
Disappointing, but not surprising. From what we know of Austin's general attitude towards soccer, and UT's specific attitude towards allowing non-UT use of DKR, this was a long shot at the best. However, we do have 13 years to change minds (I'm assuming 2018 will go to the UK).
When the US gets selected, lets hope that Texas gets a site. It was unlikely for Austin to host considering the hurdles of getting a proper pitch on DKR. When I sat back and thought about it, I figured that Dallas or Houston would make bids to top Austin's effort. Especially considering that the university probably has no interest. I would have love the WC here but a few hour drive is still well worth it.
You can bet your last dollar that Jerry World will get games, and Reliant would be likely to as well. Both great stadiums in big, easily accessible cities, with roofs to protect the fans from the summer heat.
Hopesully this will be considered a national classic by 2022 and we will all be singing it for our USMNT. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1cSngpUiow"]YouTube - America ******** Yeah We Stand As One[/ame]
Ohh, that song makes me warm and fuzzy all over. I can see me chanting that at the next national team game. America F*ck Yeah! Coming to score some M.F. goals! repeat x 3 Aztexs F*ck Yeah! Coming to score some M.F. goals!
"It's like people did not listen to it and it was so upsetting. I'm not Metallica. It's not Slipknot or Marilyn Manson. It's not even, like, Nickelback. It's nowhere near rock. The only thing I got was [when people said] 'Never Again' and 'Hole' [were rock]. Other than that, there were dance songs like 'Judas' and 'Yeah,' which is almost like Sly and the Family Stone. And then there was 'How I Feel,' which is probably the most pop song I've ever written. That's why I was like, 'What is happening?' That's like finding out how things can spin out of control and it's nothing like it actually seems."---Kelly Clarkson
