Wow, I was watching the highlights right now.

I counted the REAL scoring opportunities (regardless of shots on target or off-target; I'm talking about real almost-goals), not just dominance in more attacking volume and more possession. The REAL times when the ball could have reached the back of the net.

Mexico had 5 of these. We had 7 + 1 that did go in! And one of these was a post hit.

I'll rewind and play again and give you all the minutes and descriptions.

    10'44" - Mexico's #11 heads the ball - great save by Matt
25'22" - USA - post hit by Arriola
30'24" - Mexico's #11 gets close to right post, shoots, Matt saves
    37'42" - Mexico's #11 shots strongly from mid-distance, Matt saves
43'43" - USA - Hoppe heads the ball, it goes above the crossbar by inches
49'32" - Mexico's #10 shots strongly, ball goes wide left by inches
51'38" - Mexico's #10 taps the ball inside the small box, goes above by inches
59'34" - USA - Zardes all alone, shoots wide right. Off-side called but wrongly
70'45" - USA - Hoppe shoots from short distance, defender deflects when ball is about to go in
73'18" - USA - Zardes falls in small box, ball gets to Arriola who misses left (actually I think their goalie deflected this one with his head - confusing, hard to see - yes, it's credited as a goalie save)
95'05" - USA - Gioacchini gets an acrobatic shot, goalie barely saves
106'53" - USA - Zardes dribbles through the box, shots, goalie saves
117'37" - USA scores in a header by Miles

So, actually, the USA created MORE opportunities and fully deserved the win, despite Mexico's futile bigger volume of play.

After minute 59, ALL scoring opportunities, the real ones, were by the USA. Real goalie saves, 3 for each team.

So, no, Mexico's dominance was misleading. Like I said when I posted before the end of the game, this game was a lot closer than it seemed, and the replay confirmed it.

    Maybe they were supporting Mexico.

    Just a thought.

    Does not matter to me.

I watch A LOT of Colombian soccer and all of their commentators Yell "Gooooooooooooooooool" no matter if it is Colombia or their opponents and no matter what the situation is. They try to keep it as professional as possible.
No excuses in my book for such a weak call of the goal.

    Indeed.

It's time for Mexican-Americans to become American fans and dream of being American players.

I wonder if Mr. Ochoa has decided to change his mind after today, or if hes thinking "holy crap, these guys really need a keeper"

I'm going to guess the latter, because he's got to know that he isn't going to be in our top three anytime soon.

Rats and idiots, if memory serves.

Which led to a lot of referring to the Mexican National Team as the Green Rats.

Also: maybe it's time for us to treat Mexican-Americans like Americans.

Has there been a more perfect tournament? Forget beating Little Tri, but to find guys like Miles Robinson, Turner, Shaq, Gioacchini, Hoppe aren't afraid of the big time and even Zardes looked skilled and technical on the ball. Some light switches flipped for a lot of guys in this tourney. What more could you ask for. Credit to big G.

Were you watching Televisa, Canal de las Estrellas from Mexico? We get that channel from Tijuana along the border. They are really homers, unprofessionally so. During the Mexico-Canada game they were complaining about throw ins that were clearly for Canada. They lost all credibility a long time ago.

Well, I think that I always treat Mexican-Americans like Americans, whatever that means. But when one yells "Ole!" when Mexico is passing the ball around against the USA, one is not really acting like an American. It is also pretty stupid to do that when the game is tied.

So, one of our announcers breaks down in tears over the win, but we're complaining that the Mexican announcers weren't objective enough to get excited for our goal? I think we have enough blatant cheerleading in our announcing teams for these games that maybe we can overlook something less than strictly objective from others. Glass houses and all that.

    Bad comparison.

That was not a play-by-play guy.
It was an analyst who used to play for the USA.
    Big difference.
    But nice try.

Oh please, our whole productions are cheerleading for the USA to a massive degree, but feel free to draw imaginary distinctions so you can feel aggrieved.
