USA V. EL SALVADOR RFK STADIUM, WASHINGTON D.C. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 17, 2002 15:30 EST ESPN Yeah, its early, I know. But I can't wait any longer for our boys to play a real match. I've heard enough about the sallies notorious fans, but what can we expect from the team itself?
Couldn't agree more. MLS confidential reported possibly 6 revs players making the squad. Included Twellman, Brown, Ralston, and three others I don't recall off the top of my head.
It just said they were to be invited to camp, right? Since the season will be over, Arena might invite a good number to the camp. As for El Salvador, they lost by a goal to Mexico and upset Guatemala before going out 4-0 to the US in a downpour. They are currently ranked 92nd in the world by FIFA. A preview of the team from the Gold Cup (complete with a sentence or two about each player) can be found here: http://www.concacaf.com/news/article.page/532 Their official roster for that tournament can be found here: http://www.concacaf.com/news/article.page/563 Recap of their 0-1 loss to Mexico (Group A): http://www.concacaf.com/news/article.page/565 Recap of their 1-0 win over Guatemala (Group A): http://www.concacaf.com/news/article.page/591 Recap of their 0-4 loss to the US (Quarterfinal): http://www.concacaf.com/news/article.page/603 According to the search of 'A' matches at the FIFA website, their national team hasn't played since the Gold Cup (http://www.fifa.com/alist/index_E.html). Two Salvadoran clubs, Alianza (vs. Motagua of Honduras) and Aguila (vs. DC United), will be playing at RFK in the coming weeks, so some DC-based people might be able to give some info on a few of the players. I was at the game against them in January, but, honestly, none of their players stood out for me (I guess I was concentrating on cheering for our team, getting rained on, and drinking beer). Among the familiar MLS faces, Cerritos and Rodriguez played in that one. Mark
You can forget about Diaz-Arce and Ciefuegos as EL salvador will try to look at younger players so I would not be surprised to see Eliseo Quintanilla of DCU on the Salvadorian sqaud. If the Salvadorian fans want to go ape ************ than it does nothing but reinforce all the bad stereotypes that currently follow them. I know they are proud but acting like an ass cause your team gets killed or you despise your opponent brings no honor to your team. I am sure this is what most salvadorian fans want .Maybe they will get their ************ together and field a good team. I am not looking for any problems going into watch my team play and won't bother anyone else but if someone goes outta their way to piis on my day the roll of quarters is in the fist.
Except that Quinanilla, like Bobby Convey and Santino Quaranta for the US, will likely be playing at the qualifying for the World Youth Championships down at Charleston, SC. Qualifying for the World Youth Championships is likely more important to El Salvador than a full national team friendly, so I doubt we'll see Eliseo.
I'm a DC United season ticket holder and about that I can say a) I've certainly never seen that, and b) I've never even heard the slightest rumor of such a thing.
US 4 Sallies 1 Hopefully ALL the fans will behave decently and no one will go out of their way to embarass their team or country. I am looking for a big game from Clint Mathis, and am sure Twellman will be doing everything he can to steal the spotlight. I don't think we will have a very experienced back line, thus we may even give up 2 goals. It should be fun to watch a bunch of newbies and young uns start the battle for a place on the '06 WC squad. Hopefully, I will be in Charleston with Santino and Bobby, et al !!! Maybe we can all watch the game on tv together ....
Here is what I hope is the starting 11 Howard ??? Pope Bocanegra ??? Mastroeni Buddle DMB Donovan Mathis Twellman
I don't care too much about who plays. I know Arena will make some good choices and we'll see some younger faces on the pitch. But most of all, I'm just glad to see my boys back in action!!!! ps- anyone know what channel the game will be broadcast on? Much appreciated ~Carmen
Howard Petke Pope Hernandez Jolley Mastro Ralston Donovon DMB Mathis Twellman I know both Petke and Jolley had a bad 2002 season, but they also didn't have any midfield support like they did in 2000 and 2001. I think Brad Davis should also get called up.
i predict a 1-1 draw from a game that ends up being very similar to the match against tunisia in spring 2000... with a US player getting his first international goal. also, i think the tighter security measures being taken at lagre events these days will supress most of the behavior described in numerous threads of the el salvadoran supporters.
lol, the match is more than a month away. If this thread survives until then, I will be quite impressed. Here's doing my part, I guess. It figures to be a fully MLS team - who do you see getting their first action on the National Team?
Akwari How about Nelson Akwari? I watched him play a few games, he looked very good, especially in the game verus L.A. The Metros lost, but it wasn't his fault. His job was to defend Cobi Jones, and he did that well. If Kenny wasn't the ref, Cobi would have been ejected for his reactions after Akwari beat him time after time.
Twelve days. Poor Zadie, had to settle on Jamaica. At least it's not Barbados. Wonder if the Fish will be playing? Oh wait, wrong country. They need to have a friggin match in Phoenix, dammit.
I think we can look for Twellman and Mathis to both try and light it up. Twellman to prove that he can score on the international level and Mathis needs to show he was underutilized at the Cup and is the top scoring threat for the US, like he was in qualifying.
