Notice when the anti-US trolls show up in a "strictly moderated" "neutral" post-game thread, the mods disappear?

Bruce said if we lost today, it'd take 4 points in the last 2 games to have a chance at advancing. Well, given today's GD, it will take 6 points.

It would be too easy to get on the negative badwagon right now, so I'll just say that the US can still beat Italy and Ghana. It can't get much worse, can it?

Thanks to whatever Simpsons website I grabbed that from.

To paraphrase a USFL legend, We sucked, it was a horsesh!t performance. Johnson was the only player I saw who played halfway decent. The Czechs outclassed us everywhere. MOTM: Rosicky, of course. That's why he gets to get Miss Czech Republic.

I think the Czech Rep. was really impressive today. They are a great team and I think they'll top the group (if Koller comes back in time for the Italy game). But the US also made it easy for them today.

As for Germany, I don't think they're any worse than the Czechs, but this is not the right thread to go into detail.

I actually think this result isn't as bad as some are making out. If you think back through the game, the US was playing reasonably well until Rozicky's first goal. If Reyna scores instead of hitting the post, we're having another conversation.

After Rozicky's goal, however, the team just collapsed. Arena's second half subs were a mistake and demonstrate his limitations as a coach, his lack of tactical nous. Players in particular who were absent include: McBride, Mastro, Donovan, and Convey. I'd bench McBride and Convey for sure in the next match.

In general, as I said above, this game was a disappointment. I think the US is better than they showed, but they aren't as good as some on these boards have been suggesting. Simply put, they don't have the skill, athleticism, creativity, and tactical sophistication of top-10 teams. They can beat good sides on a good day, but 8 times out of 10, they're going to lose to teams like the Czech Republic, especially in Europe.

Well, this turn of events doesn't stop Toyota Park from opening
this month in Chicago, or slow the construction of at least two
other new stadiums in MLS, but, boy, it sure ouches!!!

Man, wish that Claudio Reyna strike had gone in off the post in
    the first half!

Gus Hiddink for our new coach. Leo Benhakker would also do. American coaches just aren't ready to succeed at this level. 2002 apparently was an aberration. I don't believe I've ever seen a less inspired Bruce Arena team. It'll be interesting to see what the lineup will be against Italy.

Well, I thought that after the German match in '98. I'm not feeling good about our chances right now.

I'm trying to decide if I'd like an Italy/Ghana draw, so we don't lose too much ground on the top two, or an Italy 4-0 Ghana result, so that the Italians might be a bit more relaxed on saturday.

The *real* problem is that unless the US team wins against Italy, soccer will once again be a sport of moms with orange wedges for the foreseeable future in the eyes of a vast majority of the population--a game that kids grow out of when they learn to use their hands.

What a difference between an Australia team playing with fire and joy, igniting a country to a sport which they had only embraced recently, and the American people feeling like the wool's been pulled over their eyes by a quasi-sport that does nothing but fill some time in their 8-year-old's schedule.

I don't think the US were that bad, they passed the ball around nice and neatly but just lacked that killer punch infront of goal.

We were certainly schooled by more technically advanced players (and coaching), but what really concerns me here is the complete lack of urgency on our part, in any segment of the match. There was no pace, none at all. The Czechs simply sat back and watched us do the same thing over and over again. They had us boxed in by the 10th minute.

How good was this win???? Haha, Rosicky should have got a hat trick, the scoreline should've been 4 or 5 to nothing. I always hear people criticizing the Czechs for being a team with a bunch of old men, yeah, Czechs showed the world why a bunch of old men should still be feared.

Perhaps. Its hard to compare. Soccer is a weird game.

I think it is too easy to fall back on how great the Czechs are. They aren't going to win the world cup, although I could see them making the semi finals.

Sorry, it is already the seventh page and this is the first mention about the trolls. I am sure if US fans were trolling anywhere else, it would have been faster. However, kudos to you and the other mods if they can get this under control like a good ref takes control of a rough game.

    ... mod's note ...

All the US mod's we're busy contemplating suicide.

But now I'm back and angry. So don't piss me off by trolling.

    :)

    ... anyway ...

Oh ... god ... that was pathetic. Awful. Awful. Awful.

Sad really. It didn't have to be that way. We can play better but Bruce realy didn't give us a chance with that lineup.

    Just sad.

Not really, any true sports fan watching the USA v Czechs wouldn't have wanted to see the US getting a hammering. (Unless they're visited Bigsoccer and seen comments by certain US posters).

The thing is, I don't want to see the USA get their ass handed to them. I want them to do fairly well and that the sport continues to grow IN America. And that's speaking as an Englishman. Having soccer as Americas number 1 sport would be great. and I mean that truthfully.

Just my thoughts on the game:

The Czechs looked good, but no more so than they have in the past. They'll tear apart teams who don't perform but they'll struggle against a well organised defence or a top quality attack (their defence looked like it will struggle against top quality).

The US just didn't turn up, but I was impressed with my first viewing of Eddie Johnson - he just seems to have something about him in the final third. Hopefully he'll start against Italy because regardless of how well he does going up against Nesta and Cannavaro will be the best learning experience of his career to date and can only serve him well for the future.

I think you underestimate them too much. They could possibly pull off an upset against Almighty Brazilians, but I would rather ITALY do that. Italy and Brazil would be a classic.

BTW - With Italy's new powerful strikers, you just have to wonder how they'll lose to USA.

that's fine, but at this level as a defender you simply can't be beaten. gooch vs. henry, rooney, shevchenko? he's not really up to that. i hate to say agoos-like, though.

eddie johnson looked good. donovan is a midfielder, not a forward. reyna is a holding midfielder not a playmaker. out of position. we need a little wing play.

i wish the starters had played some games together before this. they looked like the were just introduced in the tunnel before the match.
