http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2003/05/01/204186 The US has just added Taiwan to its list of territories to be weary about visiting due to the recent growth in the number of cases in the island. While the number has increased, the only area to be concerned about now is Taibei in the north. Where I live in Taichung, there have only been a handful of cases and people are living pretty much normally. In reality, if you stay away from Taibei, Taiwan is as safe now as it is normally. You are always in danger of mosquito borne diseases here anyway.
It depends on how you define "Safe". As I understand, a trip to Taiwan is a sure-fire way to contract lung cancer or emphysema from the 2nd hand smoke......
