It would completely transform the team. Berhalter got a lot of shit for looking continually for a regista. While he tried to force it too much, there's a reason for it, but of course, in the constant discourse, people went nuts against it. One understated consequence is that players like Johnny and Musah would suddenly be much more effective as they could play their game and their weaknesses would be less noticeable. Right now, our effective ball progression in the middle is most often via the dribble, which can create defensive imbalances (see: Tuesday). Get somebody who can hit a pass without leaving their defensive space and suddenly everything will look better.
Should that not be " 'keeper cesspool?" We are currently the poorest we have ever been at the GK position except, maybe, before 1980.
Given our inability to score goals, and the lack of dudes across the front line that can create them, he’d be on most people’s roster if they had to choose today.
That's a healthy Reyna or possibly Tessmann with more experience to do the defensive work from deep. Every player one could think of right now has questions. Are there any younger players about to enter the fray that can do that?
Except that he’s not the player right now and he’s pretty clearly been lacking in terms of physical output. If he gets that figured out he’s definitely on the roster. But unclear that he has.
With this group...Pair Tillman with Adams or slightly ahead of him and LDT at acm...Luna as a false 9...need to get LDT and Luna connected higher up field to combo and actually give us some time on the ball and verve in the attacking third.
See for example the Athletic’s current World Cup projection from today https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/64...d-projection-pochettino-depth-chart-position/
McGlynn, but the defense becomes a question. I think Tillman has the skill, but he'd need experience. Maybe Paxten with more time? Cavan if he ends up sliding back -- certainly the passing is there. I don't think we have a guy who really combines the defense and the offensive components. But we do currently have an able bodyguard in Adams.
People said this exact same thing when he came into camp in March 2024 after having not started a game since November 1, 2023. Then he provided both assists in the NL SF 3-1 win and scored the 2-0 in the final. It's complete nonsense.
You know I am only engaging other people discussing this topic right? Funny how you're not criticizing them.
I am not criticizing - just trying to move the dialog along to something productive - lord knows this team needs help. Most on this board realize how productive Gio can be - but he is not on this current roster due to the CWC. Tell you what - maybe we can go back to asking about Gio for the WC roster during the fall season - after the GC is done - wherever he ends up?
gomichigan has said that Reyna's physical performance in the 24-25 season is measurably worse than it's been in the past, and he provided a link to that info. He's very obviously not saying the same thing that people were saying in March 2024, unless those people had time machines.
Ah, the Rick Davis years. I had to look at the roster. Loved the name Boris Bandov for some reason. Went to NASL Games back then, but no national games (not sure they came to the SF Bay Area).
Yet if you actually look at the data from that season compared to this season there’s very clearly been a physical drop off. There’s been a very measurable decline. https://www.espn.com/soccer/insider/story/_/id/44603290/is-usmnt-fans-give-gio-reyna
The only relevant data would be data from March 2024 (when he was masterful with the US) to March 2025. This article communicates physical decline over the course of his career but doesn't not show me any data on the decline between March 2024 and March 2025.
Cite the data showing the difference in Reyna's physical capabilities between March 2024 and March 2025. That's the only relevant data. Just don't allude to it or say it's in the article. I read the article and it wasn't that clear. Because Reyna was masterful for the US in March of 2024. How much did his physical capacities suffer between March 2024 and March 2025? That's the only thing we need to know.
Literally the article talks about the fall off in terms of max speed and average sprints per game bottoming out this past year compared to past seasons. The physical output isn’t the same as it was in March 2024.
So where is the data? How am I suppose to assess that? My conclusions will be different depending on the variance in the data. Was there a marked decline between March 2024 and March 2025 in his physical capabilities or was it a negligible decline? In how many categories? You're just trying to be as broad and vague as possible to suit your purposes. We know Reyna had a series of injuries and suffered physical decline from 2021 - 2025 but what was the difference between March 2024 and March 2025? That's the relevant part. Because he was masterful for the US in March 2024 even with the declining physical capabilities.
Then why can't you cite it? I did read the article. Copy and paste it. I don't see it. Show me the data concerning the physical decline between March 2024 and March 2025 or even the 23/24 season and the 24/25 season. This isn't a gotcha. Just show me.
This is the post-game thread. Why can't we all just enjoy talking about a 0-4 beatdown that has left the entire MNT program in tatters?
If Gio was injured they would not have him on the CWC roster. Speaking on a Zoom call, Kovač responded to a question about Reyna, saying, "Gio is a player of Dortmund since four or five years. He is a part of my team at the moment. Gio is for sure a player who didn't play so much, but we know exactly his strengths but we have top players here in the squad. So the confidence is very big, so hopefully every player can get minutes, but I can't promise you this is depending also on the results, also injuries, but my ambition is to give every player minutes. But this is always in relation to the results." https://fansided.com/gio-reyna-left-off-usmnt-dortmund-bench-too
