Todays Boston Globe said that the USA-Portugal match is on for June 5th at Foxboro( 1st annniversary!). Will be announced this week. Portugal's other games were cancelled because of SARS, so this is supposedly on!i

I don't buy it. There is no way that ESPN would miss the opportunity to r broadcast this game.

Ha. You don't know ESPN very well, do you?

That said, the rights should be pretty easy to get from SUM/USSF, as opposed to the Gold Cup or the Confederations Cup (which involve CONCACRAP and FIFA, respectively).

I know my math is a bit rusty, but a soccer game is two hours long. Cheerleading starts at 8:30. WNBA at 10.

Guys, chill out. They prescribe medicine these days.

If they dont air the game, just pop in the old tape, watch game one of the WC, and get all excited pretending its the game that is actually going on.
Throw in a few beers and you'll never know the difference. Throw in a few extra beers and you'll never remember the difference. :)

    Calling Fox Sports World!

    SOS FSW! ... --- ... !!!

In a (nearly) perfect world FSW could step up and show this match. If it were Mexico-Portugal you know Telemundo or Univision would be ready to go in real time -- none of this tape-delay crap.

... on the other hand, the cheerleaders get tossed around as much as Cobi, and they are cuter, even if they all look like Jenna Bush, regardless of race or color or dress size.

A media mentality that can't see the importance of an international friendly like this and a cheerleading tournement is one reason why we get little respect around the world. Remember the last World Cup, and that we beat Portugal? They might want a little payback -- hello?

It's a matter of priorities, and the knowledge that there are more fans for cheerleading than for soccer doesn't help.

If any of you listen to World Soccer Weekly thru their internet broadcast, or is able to get it in NYC or LA on the radio.

They have talked to them and their answer from ESPN was "They would rather put up the Cheerleading then soccer so that guys can wanker off over the girls".

    So there you have it.

Yes, because BBC really cares about things like that we put Rob Stone in the announcers booth (do you seriously believe that anyone cares? think clearly, focus on me now, both eyes, yes, that's right). Or more importantly, that ESPN decides to give coverage to the Stanley Cup Finals from 7:30-8:30 over a meaningless friendly, one year from the Olympics and three from the World Cup.

For someone who's been practicing their sarcasm, you think they'd at least get the facts right. Maybe the Smirnoff Ice threw him for a loop.;) The Stanley Cup 'coverage' is only from 7:30 until 8:00, not 8:30. PTI from 8:00 until 8:30.

The game is the second game of a double header.

The Revs game will probably start at around 7:00pm which means that US game will probably kick off around 9:30pm or so.

The author of the Globe article is completely clueless when it comes to TV so ignore his statement for now about it not being on TV.

My guess is that it will end up on Univision or Telemundo.

Guess what? That's not English. Call me crazy, but there's just something special about watching a game involving my national team in the language I actually speak. What the hell could FSW have on the air at that time?

    wrong day?

You nitwits! The article says the match is for June 8!

    ESPN2 says:

    USA MEN'S SOCCER TEAM
    PORTUGAL VS USA
FOXBORO, MA, USA 1:00 pm to
    3:00 pm

Look for yourselves if you don't believe me:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tvlistings/schedule?date=20030608&network=2

If anybody got exercized enough about this to send "strongly worded" messages (of certain sort I'm sure we're all familiar with) to ESPN suits complaining about this... well... I'll be quite embarrassed about this on all our behalfs

on second thought... perhaps it's better they know how demanding and crazy we are... if the hint, and an erroneous hint at that, that they would skip our match is enough to send us into paroxysms of anger and cursing...

    at any rate, enjoy fellas

If you are talking about the Globe article you are the nitwit.

Here are some pieces for you to re-read

"The US could rarely promote ''revenge'' matches until recently, because the national team simply did not have enough history of success. Now, the US is preparing for a ''Revancha en la Cancha'' against Mexico tomorrow in Houston and ''A Vinganca ao Campo'' against Portugal June 5 in Foxborough."

"The Revolution meet Dallas in the opener, in a match rescheduled from June 8."

"The US will also play June 8 in Richmond, Va., in preparation for the Confederations Cup"

I assume the ESPN schedule may be a misprint which instead should be showing the game in Richmond.

Either that or Frank blew this completely.

How does crow taste anyway? Here is a hint, if you are going to be rude, actually read the article in question before calling anyone a nitwit.

Well... I was wondering when this thread would improve!

Thanks for setting me straight, there Andy.

    I guess ESPN were wrong.

    Nitwits.

  20. So let me understand this: ESPN had already planed to show the USA/New Zealand game on June 8, but not the potentially more popular USA/Portugal game ?

They seem to think that Portugal are playing June 8 and not New Zealand.

I think it would be terrible if the US/Portugal match isn't televised. After all, this was one of the biggest upsets in the WC last year (Senegal over France was bigger) and it should be televised. I hope it can at least be on FSW if it isn't going to be on ESPN, but I would rather an ESPN channel have it just because more people would be able to see it that way.

  23. It would be a tragedy if this game is not televised. Maybe we should all write to our congressmen and..... hey, wait a minute.... why am I getting all riled up about this??.... I just remembered!!... I'M ONLY 45 MINUTES AWAY FROM FOXBORO!!!!!

    Bwahahahahahahaha

Too bad some of you can't watch it... Nyahh Nyahh Nyahh Nyahh Nyyaaaahhh Nyahh!!

I think all of this confusion stems from the long-rumored US-Portugal friendly around the time of June 5th. For a short while it seemed on and then off when Portugal decided to play Japan. But I believe they cancelled that trip due to SARS related worries. After that happened Scolari said something about playing the United States.

ESPN might have been lost in the confusion somewhere. But it is Portugal on the 5th and New Zealand on the 8th. I'd have to tape the Portugal game if it is on, cause thats the night I graduate.
