Chicago Locals.... Where's an inexpensive ($100 or less) place (hotel or area/district) to stay from which you can take public transport downtown to Soldier Field and Ginger's Ale House. I don't want to drive in the traffic during the weekend, esp. if drinking. Thanks in advance.
I just saw something on Expedia or travelocity that had summer hotel specials with some great rates. Good hotels for under 100, and close to the El stops. The EL is all you will need to get around the city if your looking for Gingers and Soldier Field, you will have no problems whatsoever. Last year Gingers always took a bus to the Fire games, so I would think that this would be the case this yr. great deals, something like 6-10 dollars and that included beers. For Gingers : if you will be staying downtown most of the places are within walking distances to the EL (downtown, gold coast), you can get on either the redline or Brownline, if you get on the redline you will have to transfer to the brown line at Fullerton or Belmont, and then get off at the Southport stop and its about a 6-7 blk walk from this stop, with tons of watering establishments along the way. Like I said I saw this special on the internet where you have to book by April 15th, search around and you whould be able to find it, if you guys have ?'s on quality or location let me know and I will do my best to help you out. One more thing, if you are staying downtown and close to the El, get on the redline heading south, i think it would be pointing towards 95/howard?? You will get off at the Roosevelt stop and follow the traffic towards soldier field, its about 1 mile away not far at all. Actually I just found the link, hope this helps: http://www.expedia.com/daily/vacations/chicago/hotels.asp?rfrr=-12475
Sit tight on this one. We're hoping to set up a block for hotels in the area. $100 or less in Chicago is damn nearly a myth. Worse comes to worse, if someone's willing to put you up for the night, are you game? We'll have something posted regarding accommodations no later than next Tuesday April 6, 2004. Cheers, Fonsos
Thanks for the information. I found a place thanks to the Quigley and Co. chicago travel soccer guide. There's a pretty good deal at the red roof downtown (162 E. Ontario). Rates as low as $80USD per night for Saturday and Sunday. Pass on that information. Of course I'll consider rebooking if there's a US Soccer special elsewhere.
I spent about 2 hours on Saturday checking on Chicago hotels, and the answer is, they are pretty expensive. July 11 is a big holiday weekend so I would not count on too much in the way of discounts. I will be doing my usual travel tips piece for the Sam’s Army webpage but if you want to book something now, here are some ideas. The Red Roof Inn at 161 East Ontario is recommended. http://www.redroof.com/reservations/inn_details.asp?innNumber=281 This used to be a jewel box hotel, the hotel Tremont. Motel 6 bought the property and did extensive renovations, and then Red Roof Inn took it over. I think that the Screaming Eagles stayed here for the playoff game against the Fire, so any comments on it would be appreciated. The rooms are small and singles cost around $80, with doubles around $95. You can have up to 5 people in a room and that goes for around $120 The location can’t be beat. You are 2.2 miles north of Soldier Field and the walk is magnificent. The Magnificent Mile is 1 minute away. Coco Pazzo, a good Italian restaurant, is on the first floor, and features Modigliani-like murals. There is even a sidewalk café .Trendy bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance. I called there and the rates you get on the Internet are a little better than the phone prices. Modigliani did not answer the phone. I know a lot of people are not as crazy about youth hostels as I am, but the Chicago HI Hostel at Congress and Wabash http://www.hostelz.com/display.php/2456+HI+-+Chicago is quite possibly the finest city hostel in the U.S. I have never seen a better city hostel anywhere in the world. Each room has a new, private bathroom and it has every facility you could imagine, including a Mexican restaurant. It is a 20 minute walk to Soldier Field and a 20 minute walk to the Rush Street area, near the Red Roof Inn, where you can find plenty of bars and restaurants. It is close to many attractions, including the Bar Louie, a Barn Burners favorite. This place is always booked. Bunk beds are $24 and they used to offer private rooms for around $85. Check if you are interested. I have lots of other possibilities. My notes are at home but I will put them together and post them.
i have stayed there before... prices begin at about $120 a night with a AAA discount. nice place, and location is excellent.
