"Jurgen Klinsmann wary of unpredictable, fearless Paraguay in Group A finale" (MLSsoccer.com - Thursday, 6/9/16) (Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! GO USA!!! -G
Any chance Jurgen gets fired if we don't win? I was all for hiring him before we did it. Now, I think it was a mistake. Go Quakes!! Go USA!! - Mark
I find it humorous how the pundits are always trying to proclaim games as "must win" for Klinsie to keep his job. I mean let's say they lose 1-0 to Paraguay. Paraguay gets a lucky rebound goal and the U.S. dominates but can't find the goal. You're going to fire him for that? Playing a competitive game against on of the world's top teams, Colombia, destroying a pretty good team - Costa Rica, and then an unlucky loss to a decent team? Maybe you fire him on the basis of his body of work but if it was just for the Copa performance, in the scenario I described, it would be pretty harsh. And in fact if they tie today I think they'd probably go thru anyway.
So you see, all you Quakes haters who wanted to fire half the team after they failed to score, being up for a half a game against 10-men Portland. It isn't always so easy to score against a 10-man team, especially when you are down a goal. Haters gonna hate, JJ gonna e-du-cate!!
The final score is: 1 - 0 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! GO USA!!! -G P.S. = Please don't post results of other soccer games and other sports' games in this thread until at least 24 hours after they've ended.
Is it just me, or doesn't John Brooks now look and play like Bernardez? Can't believe Brooks is only 23 yo, he had some terrific saves today
I believe so yes as they go by goal difference not goals for or goals against. Head to head also doesn't count for tiebreakers at least not initially (see below). Costa Rica now leads 3-1 over Colombia! Per wiki..... The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows: Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches Goal difference in all group matches Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows: Greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned Greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned Drawing of lots
You know I've been waiting forever for the USMNT to have a competitive squad. At this level, I seriously doubt the "jogo bonito" really applies. If anything, as far as national team tournaments are concerned, l can care less how they play as results and progression are what matters. As famed AC Milan coach Nereo Rocco used to say when asked , if the best team should win? "I hope not , I hope we win"!
Meh, I don't know about that. The results were all over the place. Colombia beats the U.S. who beats Costa Rica badly who beats Colombia. By that logic, we simply apply the transitive property: Colombia > U.S. >> Costa Rica > Colombia So....???? Who really deserves it? And I don't think Colombia played great soccer in their loss to Costa Rica and just got unlucky. Costa Rica held their own and then some.
USMNT played and grinded to the final whistle of the third game. Colombia thought they could coast in and it cost them. While no one is disagreeing that Colombia is better than the US, but the US definitely deserves the Group win.
Costa Rica fell apart against the USA but credit should go to the Americans for responding from their loss to Colombia and came out swinging. They will have scored more tonight if Yedlin didn't get the red after the half. When you go back, they played horrible against Colombia but both goals I believe came off of set pieces. That pk sucked the life out of the Americans but if it weren't awarded, it could have been a different game. Maybe they will have lost just the same but maybe the scoreline would have been closer which will have definitely changed the game.
I actually feel pretty good about their performance overall. As Klinsie said, the Colombia game was not as one-sided as the score made it out to be. It did not look like a U.S. vs. top 5 (or so) team game of the past, where the U.S. just bunkers has very little meaningful possession and hopes to eke out a 0-0 tie or a miraculous 1-0 win. It played a little more evenly, which makes me feel like the team has progressed a bit. Anyway, unless Peru beats Brazil, the U.S. will play Peru next - a beatable opponent.
Sorry guys, I am not in the Winning is Everything camp. Yes, the team held on for 40 minutes a man down despite crazy Jurgen making his final 2 subs after the >80th minute. Exemplary effort and heart. But the USMNT play is so slow and low skilled compared to the other Copa teams. It's like watching recreational tennis, where one player has an attacking get-to-the-net game, and the other player is all chops and back spin and can't hit the ball very hard. You always laugh and feel sorry for the net player when the back spin guy wins the game, but you seldom admire the back spin guy. I really think USMNT played a faster skilled game before JK. I don't remember the players looking this badly before.
