Yeah teams don’t make scouting decisions off a single game. It’s a data point but in context with all his other performances. More critical is his performance from here on out against tougher competition where the path would like be Costa Rica, Canada, and Mexico.
No one can disagree with what you wrote. It is the type of mistake that is disconcerting. I do not watch much MLS, so Freese is fairly unknown to me. I did not get a good impression.
Anyone who is interested will watch all of his games. They will get a bad taste from that mistake. However, they will look at the whole body of work.
And who can forget the great Marc-Andre "Derp" Stegen against our very own JJ. He seems to have done okay for himself.
Our keepers in the 90s would be getting piles of red cards and PKs i n today's hame. They routinely got the edge of the box and dared the ref to make acall.
Thoughts from Herculez Gomez https://www.msn.com/en-in/sports/fo...mnts-starting-gold-cup-goalkeeper/ar-AA1Hh9Rc
Freese has performed better in MLS than any keeper since he locked in a starting role amongst the US keepers that aren't 8000 years old (Sean Johnson is on a heater currently but he's as old as the Giza pyramids)....Turner and Steffen have made how many WPIOTBGW screw ups since '19? In the shirt at least 4 or 5, club and in the shirt at least 8-10. Horvath is a notorious Gaffe machine, and statistically is horrific on top of that (same with Steffen). So its pretty simple, turn to a worse MLS goalie (and young prospect) Brady, turn to a teen like Kochen, turn to a prospect tumbling to nowhere like Gaga, or already nowhere like Beavers, or yet to advance like Eyestone, or to a patently obvious disaster in Turner, or go with the guy who through vividness bias, made a big boo boo on Sunday night but has otherwise been quite good for years. Seems simple enough. Btw, next window I'd bring Freese, Schulte, and Kochen. Steffen's been done for years (I will bring him back in the winter if his MLS season is strong but considering he's hurt, I doubt it), Turner sucks, the kids are too young, only Freese and Schulte have multiple good seasons in a row, and then there's Kochen. What I expect is Turner, Steffen and mystery guy between Freese, Schulte, Kochen and Brady....I would love it if Turner is just flushed period and only brought back if he produces a great season in France, and I emphasize season, not window.
Turner has not convinced that the job is his for quite a while, simple as that. And Herc wanting him to act like he’s above a Gold Cup bench is the mentality that could get him dropped completely as long as Poch is in charge.
Horvath has been a below average keeper in the Championship in terms of shot stopping the last three years and has his share of US and Club gaffes as well. Freese has been one of the better shotstopping keepers in MLS since he became a starter. He also plays on a possession team that does a lot of playing out of the back and is more comfortable there. We don't have an old Faithful to go back to. Much like in the 2018 cycle, we'd be better off riding whatever hot hand we could find. We had a fading Tim Howard then, and probably should have used Melia instead and it cost us. Matt Turner isn't even Tim Howard and Ethan Horvath isn't even Matt Turner.
Keeper position is in a rough spot. U.S. just needs to keep developing lottery tickets and once one hits it can set up the program for 15+ years.
At this point does Diego Kochen have a shot? Haha, jk. There are a few young GK's who have done well at a World Cup. Iker Casillas was 21 for Spain at 2002 World Cup. (Made quarters, lost to South Korea on penalties.) Courtois was 22 for Belgium at 2014 World Cup. (Made quarters, lost to Argentina.) Diogo Costa at 23 was Portugal's starter in 2022. (Made quarters, lost to Morocco.) Lloris was 23 for France at 2010 World Cup. (Went out in first round).
turner was awful last summer so I guess its steffen and schulte because someone has to play who hasn't made any mistakes and the only way to do that is to not have played before haha.
Kochen would need to establish himself as a starter somewhere to have a chance. Which won’t happen at Barcelona since they just bought a new starting goalie. So seems unlikely.
For the record (and the newer fans)... Friedel played for Premier League clubs from 1997-2015 including the #1 shirt at Blackburn and Villa for a run stretching over 10 years. As Rog Bennett would say... I'd bite my arm off for a Brad Friedel right about now.
That is a ridiculous statement. The Giza pyramids are roughly 4,800 years old. Sean Johnson is, at most, 4,000 years old.
Lyon could be relegated to the second division over financial problems per ESPN. Maybe Turner to Lyon is not the best idea. He is better off going to MLS. Lyon will appeal. This does not look good. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/45576509/lyon-relegated-ligue-2-financial-issues
Turner is not at the top of his game because he does not play. Hello, McFly! This will be remedied this summer. There is enough time for him to reach his WC2022 level, which should be sufficient... Or maybe higher.
i look forward to the surely genuine and consistent with previous opinions comparisons mls options (freese, steffen, schulte) and a ligue 2 (turner, pending appeal) keeper. ...and thats assuming turner wins and keeps the starting position.
Yeah--at this point Turner is in the doghouse (deservedly) but by no means out of the running to retake the #1 shirt, and even if he doesn't I think he's a near lock to make the WC squad both because I think you want some experience in the GK group even if it's not the starter and because he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will cause problems if he's asked to be the backup or even #3. If he does start causing problems, all bets are off...by all accounts that's why Steffen wasn't in the squad for Qatar.
