Everything Clint Eastwood said is correct. My anger and frustration knows no bounds. We should have been giving opportunities to academy kids a few weeks ago at least.
Not that I'm giving up on the guy but we have like a dozen U-23 goalkeepers and the World Cup is only a year and a half away... not sure how Slonina makes the roster from the third division when MLS is the same level as the second division. He doesn’t seem to have a handle on when to come out and when to stay. And if he does come out, clear the ball and everything in between! This is the complaint of Barnsley fans: he doesn’t understand how to play the position properly yet.
Still good potential, just a later developing position and good he’s getting the opportunity to play and learn and get better.
In a way, I think if a young keeper is going to have problems, "not knowing how to play the position properly" is a good one to have. If he has the basic shot-stopping and athletic abilities, he should in theory get better at his decision making with more reps. The thing that is starting to concern me with Slonina is that even though he's young, he has had a good number of first team starts for such a young age--33 in MLS, 34 in Belgium, and 14 so far with Barnsley in League 1 or Cup games. And he's apparently not improving much despite going down in league quality.
I agree I was just hopeful he could clean up his game enough to be viable by '25, and viable for camps by late '24, but it doesn't look like it. I imagine we are going to white knuckle things with Turner and Schulte and pray they bring in Freese to see if his numbers are sticky in the international game.
Luccin was coaching for a full time job. The Hunts are talking about his 1.5 ppg now. Maybe other coaches were also in that tough spot. I also wanted Carrera to get that but Maurer is likely retiring and going to a FO position. I get why he was the starter. Just business and understanding the owners.
We haven't heard at all. I'd say that if Poch (and his GK coach) wants to learn the domestic pool, then that's the best way to do it. He's not going to be calling up those types of players in the November window. At least I don't think he will. I personally am in favor of skewing young at January camp. And I wouldn't call in the keepers that he's already worked with. So I wouldn't call in Schulte and Steffen. If we do that camp, he needs to use it to expand the net. Maybe two mid-career guys and two youngsters. Something like Freese, Celentano, Brady, and Beavers.
Bravos got smoked this week, but looking at FBREF advanced gk stats and they have Benny Diaz as the #7 starting keeper in the LigaMX Apertura.
Nothing has been announced but it was Klinsmann who said he wanted to cancel but couldn’t because they needed to fulfill the TV dates. Which I assume is still the case.
Yep, if there's someone I imagine had no idea what's happening in MLS it would be Poch. I would use the camp to evaluate: *The best no longer Prospects (the Ferreira's, Morris and Arriola's of the world) *I'd call in the best young prospects age 17-22 period. *I'd call in the pile of interesting goalkeepers: Beavers, Brady, Schulte, Celentano, Callendar. Not sure, but to me, it would be most valuable for him to find out: *What vets actually have utility (the Arriola, Ferreira, Morris, Walker Zim type guys) *What youngsters are actually on the cusp of having utility/going to move....guys like Luna, guys like a Guti on a bounce back under Berhalter (he does play the position that usually garners production in his typically neutered attack) etc *sort through what goalie prospects are interesting to make up the #'s/compete with Turner.
old man Guzan not looking like a geriatric arthritic polar bear tonight... he's got like 4-5 great saves
Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke backs loanee Gaga Slonina to improve after his ‘dip in form’ Gavin Beavers “From Monarchs to RSL, to the (youth) national team, every step has been a part of this journey” pic.twitter.com/sHGY6PpKg4— Real Salt Lake (@realsaltlake) October 25, 2024
My rationale in boosting Guzan has been simple. Odds are you won't need him. So leadership and things like press relations are valued. If you are down to playing a third keeper , then the difference in quality is less important than not choking because the stage is too big. Guzan has big stage experience for club and country. If you go with Guzan at #3, then you know Turner is 1 keeper, &then it's just settling on the other from a few candidates. It simplifies things and saves time for other positions.
So I jumped off the train 72 hours before it went off the bridge and into the canyon waters below lol.
