I remember reading something similar is that for Australia, the guy everyone wanted to start wasn't picked as the coach wanted the no.1 to feel secure in his role. So I can imagine this could be somewhat legit.
I didn't expect his return to MLS would have gone so poorly. I mean he was average at Middlesbrough but could have remained there had he cut his wages.

Every time I mention him here, his play drops, But this is his best pro accomplishment so far: Benny Diaz, FC Juarez keeper, was named as the keeper on the FotMob Liga MX Team of the Week. for his game against a curiously bottom of the table Santos Laguna this past week. I didn't reallze this, but it seems like Benny has re-won the starting job a month or so ago and has improved each week. Hopefully he can hold the form, and maybe earn a call to January camp. To quote another member:
I didn’t but he’s been clearly worse than his previous tenure in MLS. I thought he’d replicate that level.
So, Turner still king of the mountain. This is just who we are now. Just gotta hope for him to be at his best.
If Turner isn't rusty his shot stopping is at a level none of the other current guys can reach Incredible double save by Matt Turner 🧱Watch USA vs. Panama live on TNT and Max 📺 pic.twitter.com/09ImM3hLZC— B/R Football (@brfootball) October 13, 2024
Gotta give him his flowers, that was superb, especially considering his view was partially blocked on the first shot and he still pulled that out of his rear. If he could just focus on shot stopping, I'd be a happy camper in terms of the #1, and just worry over how to order Schulte, Freese, and my developmental project guys (Gaga, Kochen, Brady, Beavers).
It's not just that he made that double stop, he is the only our keeper capable to do that. Like Pulisic he is another guy who needs to feel comfortable to play well. And obviously he felt comfortable, he looked differently, he communicated with the defenders differently. And, of course, he had less unneeded back passes to deal with.
Glad to see Turner have a good match… Maybe he can figure something out at his club this winter, or maybe, at least, next summer, and find a place where he can consistently play.
I'm not sure if he's the only keeper in the pool capable of pulling off the double save (and others) last night. But he's the one that did. Good, confident, assured performance from him. The type of performances we've seen from him in the past. It'll be very interested to see who starts against Mexico. If its Turner again, then we have a clear sign of who Poch thinks is #1. If its Schulte, then the competition is ON (as we presumably want).
Yeah, not much to do but that double save was excellent and he had a nice moment showing really sure hands on a cross in the first half. AS much as we've all been feeling nervous about Turner, he showed up last night.
And the reason that double save was necessary (his failed distribution), tells the tale of why we need better.
Eh, this is a lot to put on Turner. It starts with McKenzie unnecessarily passing back to him, and he already knows he's created a chance for Panama to press as he runs away -- he's immediately moving to create space in a hurry because the pass was dumb. He really just should have sent it out to Ream himself directly. Turner's pass does hop to Ream, and perhaps he'd had been better off booting it. But Ream does get it down, and instead of booting it, he makes a bad decision and a bad pass that gets hit up in the air. Aaronson (Morris?) loses an extended duel for it, and Busio misplays his man. Musah is overcommitted as well. And Morris and Jedi are slow to the rebound on the first shot. Turner's pass isn't great, but it's hardly a duck and about four people could have snuffed it out afterwards.
Turner is now top five all time in wins... If Turner cannot drop Dean Henderson by Christmas, he's got to GTFO of Palace. Go down one level. Whatever it takes to get playing time.
Turner just tied Brad Friedel for 5th all time in wins. Last night's dub moves @headdturnerr into the top five all-time in #USMNT wins 🧤 pic.twitter.com/lL8dhy87Jx— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) October 13, 2024
Just for context, Turner is 6th in all time USMNT appearances among GKs. He actually moved into 6th about a year ago, less than 3 years after his debut. All of the players above him on that list played somewhere between 12 to 18 years for the national team. 1. Tim Howard - 121 (2002-2017) 2. Kasey Keller - 102 (1990-2007) 3. Tony Meola - 100 (1988-2006) 4. Brad Friedel - 82 (1992-2004) 5. Brad Guzan - 64 (2006-2019) 6. Matt Turner - 46 (2021-now) 7. Arnie Mausser - 35 (1975-1985)
I don't see him getting 100 caps but I can see him dethroning Guzan if 1) his rivals for the no.1 jersey are weaker or 2) he gets enough appearances for Palace. Out of all of our keepers, he's gotta be the one who's had the most unexpected success and in such a rapid amount of time.
I didn't mean to but that;s Monty Python meme material. Just four things! Thanks that's awesome. Maybe Turner can find a team like de Gea did with Fiorentina where he can make a bunch of saves and be man of the match without being a passing legend.
