Really looking forward to the CC and in particular this matchup.
Brazil will have a mixed team of WC Champs and newer guys that are VERY hungry to show work. Though they will not have the your phenoms Kaka, Robinho and Diego. From Brazils 3-0 win over Nigeria yesterday you can tell that the team isnt calling it in as the WC Veterans were doing recently.

So this adds up to a very very interesting challenge for the US. Brazil's forwards Gil and Luis Fabiano are in an extremeley hot moment in their carreer and Ronaldinho Gaucho will be there to keep that WC Champions respect on the field.

A US Win against Brazil will open many many eyes and truely confirm that the US has really arrived and 2002 WC was not a fluke. Lets just hope they hold their own against the tricky Turks and dont go into the Brazil game from a defeat.

If we take the game seriously and play like in the friendly against Nigeria, adding Alex (who is in a great phase) to the foward, I predict a 5 x 0 score for Brazil.

5x0.....!! No way...that would be horrible for US soccer.

If I HAD to make a prediction..I would say 3x1 Brazil.

    But my heart is split.

The US doesn't lose 5-0 to anyone in the world.

    For reference...

USA's last 3-goal loss: 1-4 to Denmark, Jan. 22, 1997. The USA has played 102 matches and appeared in two World Cups since that match. Opponents have included Brazil 3 times, Germany 5 times, Argentina twice, Netherlands twice, Mexico 12 times, Italy, and Portugal, among others.

Last loss by a 4-goal margin: 0-4 to Mexico, July 25, 1993. It's been almost a decade since that match.

Last loss by a 5-goal margin: 0-5 to England, June 16, 1985. That's 18 years ago. And we've played Brazil 8 times since then.

Brazil will probably beat us, but NOT by 5 goals.

I'll be happy if we're competitive with them and we don't look out of place playing against them. All I want is to say that we had a good chance of winning this match after 90 minutes.

We have a good chance of winning.......the days of us showing up to 'not get embarrased' are over....we aren't going to win every game but, I think we can go into every match thinking we can/should.....

I'm going on a limb and saying 1-0 Brazil. Which seems to be the score almost every time we play them.

Of course we should have tied them in the 99' ConfedCup but Joe-Max missed a PK.

    EDIT:

US history vs. Brazil over the past 10 years:

    3/3/2001
1 : 2 US Men Brazil Pasadena, CA Friendly
US : Mathis 40; Brazil: Ronaldinho Gaucho 24, Ueller 56

    7/28/1999
0 : 1 US Men Brazil Guadalajara, Mexico Confederations Cup
    Brazil: Ronaldinho 12

    2/10/1998
1 : 0 US Men Brazil Los Angeles, CA Gold Cup Semifinals
    US : Preki 64

    1/18/1996
0 : 1 US Men Brazil Los Angeles, CA Gold Cup

    7/20/1995
0 : 1 US Men Brazil Montevideo, Uruguay Copa America

    7/4/1994
0 : 1 US Men Brazil Palo Alto, CA, USA World Cup

    6/6/1993
0 : 2 US Men Brazil New Haven, CT, USA World Series of Soccer

Christ you guys are so negative. If we lose to them at all, it will be by one goal. Nobody ever beats us badly. I predict a scoreline of 1-1. Who gives a crap what this nimrod MIGKiller says anyways. He either has never seen the US play or he is just another fu#!in' troll!

Well, if even the powerhouses like Argentina (5x0 to Colombia in WCQ 94, in Buenos Aires) and Germany (5x1 to England in WCQ 02, in Germany) can be beaten by the score of 5, why not the US?

Sure theoretically it could happen, but I will bet my house that it doesn't. Especially to an inexperienced Brazilian squad. If you guys were fielding Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Lucio, Cafu, Kaka, etc. against this relatively young and inexperienced US squad, then your argument would have more credibility.

Honestly, we have to remember these types of stats. There are so many idiots,...er, fans from other countries who automatically think the US will get creamed at every match that the only way to get them to shut up is to show them the numbers.

HOW WRONG YOU ARE! You got it backwards pal. If all the star Brazilians were there it would be 1x0 MAX because those guys have been calling it in since the WC Final. These "inexperienced" Brazilians are very hungry and all in good phases of their careers. Look what they did to NIGERIA IN NIGEIRA 2 days ago...3x0. Meanwhile the star Brazilian squad couldnt score against Mexico a few weeks ago and hadnt won 1 game for coach Parreira yet.

The US should be in MORE than max alert , these Brazilians are going to come out swinging. I dont think it will be 5x0, but the chances are better to be 5x0 against this team than against Ronaldo, Rivaldo etc... Also dont forget a few STARTERS are there like Ronaldinho Gaucho, Lucio etc...so its a lethal mix.

I think the USA team will hang in there with Brasil. The 3-0 scoreline doesn't represent the game in Nigeria well at all. Nigeria had numerous chances that they could not put away and Brazil did their job of finishing the chances they were given.

I wouldn't be surprised with a scoreline of 0-0 in the confed cup.

I'm really looking forward to this game, but I doesn't mean anything of how far we've come. If we do beat them, those that don't like the US will say its because they didn't have their full squad. And if we don't beat them, then everyone will say they are right about the poor US side. We will only get respect when we beat a Brazil/France/Germany/Italy/Argentina at the World Cup and do so in a very convincing mannor.

African teams are known for being tactically naive. In other words, Nigeria could not play defense if their life depended on it. Bruce Arena is a very tactically savy coach. He will have us ready. Unlike other footballing nations, we never underestimate anyone.

OK - by good ole MIG's thinking: Why not 5-0 to the US?

Course I am not expecting either side to score more than 2 goals.

Why not put Brazil on the back foot?

Everyone that plays Brazil fears thier ball skills and attacking flair. So it's bunkerball and hope for your goalie to have the game of his life (like Keller did in the Gold Cup victory over Brazil). Why not just risk taking it to them? They might expect that from an African team, but the USA?

Play an attacking triangle of Mathis, Donovan and Convey. Put Beasley at left mid, and have Eddie Lewis play left back. DMB and Lewis can switch off and overlap each other. Stevie C can work the right channel and push forward as well. Counter fast and hard with numbers forward. We did this to great effect against Portugal and Germany in the WC, plus I also remember a big upset in Copa America against Argentina where Steve Sampson turned the offense loose. If we get ahead, then bring in Vanney and Mastro late for defensive help.

At some point, Arena has to be given credit for installing confidence in his players. They believe they can take anyone.

Pretty much. There is no shame in losing to a world power and if you have your chance to win whats the problem? All anybody can ask for no matter who they play is a chance to win.

I seem to recall another Portuguese speaking team that thought they were going to beat us pretty handily because their players were "hungry" and had "something to prove." I think we can all remember what happened there.

I feel very confident in our ability to score on Brazil. My concern is keeping them out of our net.

Exactly. I think Turkey showed how to scare Brasil, and it's only becaue of that questionable PK that Brasil won that game. We should definitely follow Turkey's model on how to beat Brasil.
