Mexican president just 2 days ago said her government was going to do everything possible to host the 2029 CWC. Brazil also wants it along with other countries. If MLS can't win CCC to get a spot in the CWC at least hosting it guarantees one MLS team in it. Cut off date for CONCACAF CWC representatives is the 2028 CCC.
Maybe let’s have some tournaments outside the US for a while. Also, FIFA should either give a much bigger percentage to the players and clubs or stop grinding players into dust by forcing them into yet another tournament during the off season.
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez says the confederation is working with Concacaf to create a new club championship based on sporting merit. “We are working with Concacaf to create a club championship… like relaunching the Interamerican Cup with more participation.” Another successful joint competition would deepen the relationship between the Americas. A step closer to an eventual Concacaf-CONMEBOL union? It was suppose to happen about 2 or 3 years ago. It never did. Either scheduling, TV rights and/or location were the issue. They are bringing it up again. Let's see if they follow through with it this time. If they do then I assume it would be like it was initially planned; one country host (more than likely US), each team plays 2 games. Leagues Cup Champ vs Libertadores Champ and Copa Sudamericana Champ vs CCC Champ. Winners meet in the final. Losers play for 3rd place.
There is also the fact that the "Copa Interamericana" (i.e. Derby of the Americas) now happens annually at the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
And the proceeds from that matchup go to.............. FIFA CONMEBOL partnering with CONCACAF to create a mini-tournament directly benefits them.
It was announced before the Club World Cup was expanded and finalized I believe. Then when the Club World Cup announced the amount of prize money it just slowly faded away to we will talk about it in the future. I also thought it was going to involve the woman's leagues as well.
Yeah, they talked about a 4-team tourney (with the Copa Lib + Sud winners) but once they were able to shoehorn Miami into the expanded CWC it died down. If Miami win something (anything) this year they can build the qualifying criteria around that
I don't think Miami is the key going forward but the schedule as all these leagues don't lineup right now. When would you play and will it make you money or cost you money is the problem. Haters want to get rid of Leagues Cup but the prize money is more than CCC right now. Now add in more travel and expense plus time needed to play, that's the problem.
At least to me the scheduling seems to be the problem. We already have a CCC Champ. Was known since May. Leagues Cup Champ won't be known till September. Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana Champions won't be known till December. And on December the CCC Champ and Copa Libertadores Champion need to play in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. So when can they schedule this to get all 4 Champions?
