I didn't see a thread on this game. I know most of our attention is gonna be on the senior game, but I think this game is a least worthy of its own thread. Here's a link from ussoccer.com: http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=24323&itype= The U.S. did not make qualification easy on themselves, going down to ten men in the 19th minute when Santino Quaranta was shown a red card for a violent foul on Escobar. Quaranta, as well as head coach Thomas Rongen, who was shown a red card for entering the field of play in the 87th minute, will both miss Sunday’s clash against Canada. I hadn't seen any mention of Rongen being sent off before. IMHO, this could affect how the team plays today. They've already qualified, but I'd like the US to beat Canada just for pride. That way we can say the US is better than Canada at all levels, Senior, U-20, and women's (but no U-19 girls).
With the result of the Haiti match, Canada could lose 2-0 (hopefully not) and still qualify. I believe if Canada loses 3-0, a coin toss would be needed. Canada needs to score a goal....
looks like the USMNT matchtracker will carry updates of the U-20s; hopefully now that the last match has started Fox will post its schedule of the U-20 replays.
According to a post on the Voyageur board, Canada 1 USA 0 (goal by Hume) video of the goal www.canadian-soccer.com/post/u20/humegoal.mpg
3-2 Canada with 15 minutes left Clips of the goals are available on the Voyageurs site. They will be deleted a few minutes after the game is over.
Canada had a fourth goal called back because off an offside. Match now into ET (3-2 Canada) Game over, 3-2 Canada. Canada wins the group and advances to the U20 WC with the USA.
From US Soccer: Scoring Summary: 1st - 2nd - Final United States 0 - 2 - 2 Canada 0 - 3 - 3 CAN – Iain Hume (Kevin Harmse), 55. CAN – Chris Lemire, 70. CAN – Iain Hume (Wyn Belotte), 71. USA – Frank Simek (Bobby Convey), 73. USA – Ed Johnson (Bobby Convey), 76.
A defense that hadn't given up a goal for 200+ minutes gives up three in a 16-minute span. What happened?
Thanks very much - I return the best wishes to the US in the UAE. I think its safe to say that the two best teams qualified from this group, though I feel a little sorry for Haiti who played well but will go home. If their program could get an influx of cash they could return one day to their halcyon days of 1974, as they have the raw skill & athleticism required, just needs to be developed.
I believe they were deleted because of copy right laws. I doubt anyone in the US gets Rogers Sportsnet, but they are showing the game at 3pm EST.
They've already started to do that...when this group was U-17s they had an 18-month training camp (with a French coach IIRC) and according to CONCACAF played in over 30 countries. I believe they made something like six tours of Brazil. The results seem to be pretty clear...this is the best youth squad they've had in a long time. Now to see if the players can continue developing, and if the youth investment wasn't a one-time thing.
