US-Turkey (Landon played) [R] 2-1, Turkey. Both their goals were questionable, but the sound was off at the Brit, so it was hard to tell the announcers' perspective. Turkey's first goal was a dubious looking PK called on Captain Frankie, and their second, the winner, was on a broken play in front of the US goal. Superb assist from L-dog to DMB for the US goal. Weak crowd, though. Relocate France.
I just watched most of the game, with profuse use of TiVo enabled slo-mo replay. Landon's cross to DMB was superb, curled in nicely Eddie Lewis style from deep in the left corner to DMB running far post behind a defender and the keeper. DMB ripped the header into the upper right corner. The keeper never had a chance. The penalty kick call was a terrible injustice. The Turkish player may have even been offsides, though they didn't move the camera quick enough to tell for certain. However, he clearly played the ball with his upper right arm back down towards his feet in the box. The assistant ref should have had a clear view of this. It wasn't until after the handball that Califf appeared to slightly clip him from behind. That foul was a 50-50 call. If the foul was called on Hejduk, that's absolutely ridiculous, as he barely brushed up against him. Anyway, the Turkish player should have already been called for an intentional handball. Given where he was in the box and how he played it with his arm to his feet, he should have gotten a yellow. What's even worse is that Kirovski got knocked down from behind in the box in the first ten minutes on what should have been a clear penalty call. How the ref could not call that, but then award Turkey a PK for their own illegal handball followed by a dive makes me think the ref is moonlighting from the MLS. The second Turkish goal looked clean, though. Califf didn't pull up, thus keeping Sanli onsides. Mathis took a great shot that was headed off (or from inside) the line. Since the Turkish defender was moving backwards into the goal and the camera angle wasn't inline with the goal line, it was hard to tell if it completely crossed the line. The Mexican announcers were split on whether it should have been a goal. I thought the US totally dominated for the first ten minutes, but then were mostly on their heels until DMB's goal. The rest of the game that I watched was more even, with Turkey maybe having a slight edge.
Not sure Kirovski's was a PK, but clear foul. Ball was clearly played off the arm, should have been called there, but then Califf took a moronic swipe at the Turkish forward which is what I think got the whistle. Ball looked like it was headed before it fully crossed the line. 2nd goal was on Berhalter iirc, not Califf.
