While trying to get on USSF, which bumps to ussoccer.com and then crashes, I did my own searh and found the following - Founded in 1912 by Sir Thomas R. Dewar when he bought a trophy for $500 which then became the actual cup first awarded in 1914. for the full story - http://pointme.to/soccer/usopencup.htm Check the past winners from this area! Clearly the Cup belongs back in our (NY/NJ) neighborhood where it started and where it belongs! We Want The Cup Back ! we should email this info to the sports editors, would make a nice local NYC human interest story.... If we don;t do the leg work, they certainly won;t do it...
NYMetros - Thanks for the great suggestion. I just emailed it to a few that I know. If you're gonna talk the talk, ya gotta walk the walk. I never knew the Open Cup had so many local winners. It really does belong back here.
I was at the 1991 Final in Brooklyn. Funny stuff. The honchos of the Brooklyn Italians SC were completely puzzled when my girlfriend (now wife) and I showed up to see the match. They had no expectations whatsoever that spectators would show up for the match and a comical debate ensued among them as they tried to decide on the spot what, if anything, they should charge for admission.....
Great work. You missed a couple of local champs though. 1921 Robbins Dry Dock F.C. (Brooklyn, NY) 1937 New York American F.C. In addition the following area clubs were runner-ups: 1914 Brooklyn Celtic 1915 Brooklyn Celtic 1922 Brooklyn Todd Shipyards 1933 New York Americans 1938 St. Mary’s Celtic (Brooklyn, NY) 1948 Brookhatten F.C. (New York) 1957 New York Hakaoh 1975 New York Inter-Giuliana 1976 New York Inter-Giuliana 1981 Brooklyn Dodgers 1989 New York Greek-American 1990 Brooklyn Italian S.C Also of note is that New York Greek-American is the only club to have won the Cup 3 straight years.
Come on now! Where are the moderators? No red card for studsup for leaving out the [R] in the thread title? I just bought a book on US soccer history and by posting all the results, he spoiled it for me! Just kidding. That's interesting stuff. One wonders who sponsored all those teams.
If I haven't pumped the Open Cup Ale Up enuff, I should mention that our very own publican at Nathan Hales : Carl Christian, played for the NY Greek Americans in that '89 Final!!!! He and his Dad (Live From Leeds, don't ya know!), and Publican Ritchie will ALL be coming with us on the bus. THIS TIME HE WILL COME HOME A WINNER!
This is awesome stuff folks! Wouldn;t that be cool if some of these teams could be reunited before the 2003 US Open Cup Final?
This just goes to show how much history this cup has and the honor of winning such a storied tournament. It would be fanatastic to bring this cup home in dedication to all those former champions from the metro area.
GhostofBillR4 - "One wonders who sponsored all those teams." Many were sponsored by the local industries the players worked for. Larger industrial plants had their own teams and liked the recognition amongst the immigrant work force. Some were local clubs with more of a grass roots neighborhood feel. The term corporate sponsorship had yet to be coined. There was a good bit of bragging rights at stake and the rivalry was pretty intense. I can almost picture the teams taking the field like the opening scene in "Gangs of New York". Very nice of Sir Thomas Dewar to spark this sport here for us. He'd be real proud of the intense fan support his very expensive cup has generated amongst us yanks. And he'd probably notice that those of us from this coast, this NY/NJ neighborhood have taken to it "rawther well indeed" Thanks, we'll take good care fo the cup for you and we know all about bragging rights! Go Metro! We Want The Cup, Back Where It Belongs!
actually, that's the old trophy, that was retired 3 years ago. the one the teams gts now is a glorified flower vase looking piece of crap
Oh... does anyone know where i can see the glorified flower vase looking piece of crap... before we see it on the 15th..
