Sort of... ...it will be interesting to see whether the club promotes this match now that the Crew is out of MLS Cup.
Dumb question. If the Crew do win the US Open Cup, does that get them automatically entered into any other 'tournaments' next year besides the Open Cup? Just curious.
I asked the same question on the MLS forum. Of course, no one has replied, because they're all worried about counting heads to see if they have 10,000 for the MLS Cup final, or debating "rumors" that LA Galaxy are seceding from MLS or something. There are four possible scenarios, I just need to figure out who qualifies for CONCACAF Champions' Cup based on each one: 1) Supporter's Shield: Los Angeles MLS Cup: Los Angeles (runner-up New England) Open Cup: Los Angeles (runner-up Columbus) 2) Supporter's Shield: Los Angeles MLS Cup: Los Angeles (runner-up New England) Open Cup: Columbus (runner-up Los Angeles) 3) Supporter's Shield: Los Angeles MLS Cup: New England (runner-up Los Angeles) Open Cup: Los Angeles (runner-up Columbus) 4) Supporter's Shield: Los Angeles MLS Cup: New England (runner-up Los Angeles) Open Cup: Columbus (runner-up Los Angeles)
Well, I'm pretty sure the Supporter's Shield doesn't get you in. I think it has something to due with the fact that the League doesn't recognize it as official. I would think that the MLS Cup championship is an automatic bid. As far as the Open Cup is concerned, I have no idea. I would like to think, yes. I am sure someone on here has a clue.
Honestly I don't think MLS and/or USSF know at this point. With the expanded CONCACAF champions whatever, MLS had four teams this past season. But, since CONCACAF canceled the Giants Cup last year before it finished one US representative was DC United. I think the other three were San Jose (MLS Cup 2001), Kansas City (MLS Cup 2000) and maybe Chicago (US Open Cup 2000, MLS Cup 2000 finalist). If they have to fill four slots for the next edition I hope the Open Cup champ gets in.
Now that I think about it, I think you're right...this year's participants were: San Jose (2001 MLS Cup winners) Kansas City (2000 MLS Cup winners) Chicago (beats the hell out of me) DC United (beats the hell out of me) I have no idea how the 2003 format will be (i.e. how many US teams there will be). But, should Los Angeles do the treble, they're going to need some way to fill one or two or even three more US spots, I would think.
if the galaxy win the mls cup and the supporter's shield, then it would be more likely that you guys would get one of the additional slots but i believe the winner is suppose to get a slot... but looking back to this year and seeing that the galaxy got the boot makes one wonder... of course they were alos supposedly doing some rectification for the past... so i would imagine next year that you guys would get a spot if you win
Hey All - Who gets what invite aside... Good Luck to the Crew in the Open Cup Final - Here's a Revolution Supporter hoping that the Revs and Crew get a nice peice of hardware for their cases and that the Gals end up with Jack S*** Nothing.
also heard that the Crew is off until Wednesday. Hopefully the few days off will be good for them and that we still have that self-help guy.
Nobody in the history of the Big Soccer Boards has better expressed their stupidity using fewer keystrokes than this. This is not a poll.
Frankly, based on the semifinal and Rochester-Colorado final, a crowd of 5,000 would be a drastic improvement.
I might be a little off on this, but based upon what I remember, I can say that Jim Smith has a policy that whenever it is a soccer game, even if the Crew are not playing, to open up the whole stadium. Sometimes though he does go against this policy (HS games, for example) and downisizes the stadium. For those of you who were at the 1999 final, management opened up the entire stadium and eventually were pushed over to the lower east side. Anyway, I have a nagging feeling he should have started with a downsized stadium (lower east and 137) and opened up other sections as need be. I hope i'm wrong.
No, the entire stadium stayed open for the '99 Final. I was just over at the ground to buy tickets for the Open Cup. From what the guy in the ticket office said, there haven't been many sales.... ...another bang-up job by Ned Flanders & Co. in the area of promotion.
You're correct, it did, but they asked everyone in attendance to move to the lower east side. Some did, some didn't.
Maybe Ned IS doing something to promote the game Page 3 of the Dispatch sports section had a single column ad on the right hand side ... some of the highlights include: HappyHour from 5:30-6:30 - $2 draft beer Buck-A-Brat Night!!! Tickets ranging from $18 to $34.
