The 2012 US Open Cup Final will air on GOLTV USA. FOX Soccer passed after noticing that the US Open Cup Final will go head-to-head against Real Madrid vs AC Milan on ESPN2.
I'd cancel Fox Soccer right now, if I wasn't watching on someone else's cable system. I don't understand how you can claim to be a Soccer anything, and pass up on the final of the oldest tournament in the country, which has a berth in the CCL on the line because you don't want to go head-to-head with an exhibition.
Bingo. The U.S. Open Cup just doesn't sell. ESPN2 has it in the 1990s and gave it up (after Rochester beat a whole bunch of MLS clubs to win it one year.) FOX Sports World/FOX Soccer Channel/FOX Soccer had it for over a decade and couldn't get viewers to tune in.
I bet you could get some viewers if you promoted it and showed more than just the final so that people know a tournament is going on in the first place. Would be awesome if NBCSN would pick up the USOC next year.
We don't know that's actually the "because." Also, this is apparently a three-year deal. I doubt very seriously FSC knows what the final will be up against in 2013 and 2014.
Considering GolTV has the final for the next two years, unless they go out of business, doesn't look like it will happen. Also, I'll bet you that a tournament final on a Wednesday night in late summer/early fall will not be a ratings grabber, given the amount of resources it takes to get people to watch the actual league at decent viewing hours.
Correct. 3-year deal through 2014. No one knows yet whether FOX Soccer will still be FOX Soccer or "FOX Sports 1" by this time next year. FOX Soccer is in no position to cut any new deals for minor products or a newscast beyond 1 year until the EPL situation resolves itself by the middle of October.
So if USSF was interested in a three year deal (perhaps so they don't have to go through this every year, perhaps because they're realizing the importance of their own tournament - tee hee - but for whatever reason) and GolTV was interested in adding programming because they're losing quite a bit and potentially adding American soccer programming can help them boost their fortunes, and if FSC couldn't cut deals for more than a one-off..... ...then what the hell does it matter what game is on ESPN2 next Wednesday?
What will be on ESPN2 next Wednesday night mattered. Blame U.S. soccer for scheduling the open cup final on the same night as Real Madrid vs AC Milan. There was no way in h--- FOX Soccer would pay more than $1 for the 2012 US Open Cup Final knowing the way the likes of Joshua Glassel operates, as he is always looking for $1 deals (as he did with Canal Plus Events for Ligue 1 in 2010-2012, and he apparently has done with SPORTFIVE for the Scottish Premier League in the next 2 seasons.) Can't imagine that GOLTV paid much if anything either for the US Open Cup Final. $1000 might have been enough. I know that I personally wouldn't pay $1000 for it.
Everybody wins, then. Because you'll never have that responsibility. The worst part is - with Phil's departure - we're likely to get the clowns who did the Brazil/Argentina match back in June.
Juan Arango and George Metallus have been confirmed as English-language talent for the U.S. Open Cup Final on GOLTV. The Brazil-Argentina match on GOLTV in June was primarily targeted for the Spanish-speaking viewers so Arango and Metallus stayed behind in Miami while Diego Pessolano was at the Meadowlands. The U.S. Open Cup Final should be different, as the primary audience will be English-speaking.
Because they like money more than they like the idea of trying to best promote their domestic club cup competition? The (money-making) friendly on Aug 8th at Yankee Stadium was sanctioned long before USOC knew the exact date (and time specifically) for the 2012 USOC Final. (What's shocking is that US Soccer selected a Central Time Zone host for the USOC final and to have the game kick-off at 9pm ET, when they could have pushed that game back an hour, or opted to have the game played in the Pacific Time Zone. Maybe US Soccer just really wanted to have the USOC final played in an appropriately sized venue and not on artificial turf.)
I'm reading the GOLTV deal as follows: FOX Soccer would rather throw in the towel and show a repeat broadcast of something instead of a live event, assuming that most people will be watching the European friendly.
I can't see NBCSN picking up games that involve second division teams, unless they can do so for super-cheap OR it's part of the package deal, but I would like to see them pick up MLS v MLS games. Someone, somewhere knows how to promote this tournament.
There USED to be a rule about not being able to host so many games in a row and your team actually had to travel once a in a while. And then Seattle came along and the rule was changed, or they play by their own rules, or whatever it is. Making Seattle play on the road?? *gasp shock* I know that's some sort of soccer sacrilege, but it only seems fair for the rest of the competition. This game is set for Tuesday? Wednesday? Whatever day it's set for, would it be really so hard to change it to the other day and totally avoid this European match?
No, there wasn't. DC and Rochester have both hosted the vast, vast majority of their games at home. Going back years. Well before "Seattle came along." A) At this point, yes. Logistically, it would be complicated (but not impossible), but why do it because.... B) It's a friendly. It's not a European match per se. It's a Money Grab Match. And... C) ******** them anyway. People in Kansas City are going to go. People in Seattle will (bitch and then) go watch it somewhere. Very few people in the rest of the country will have access to it anyway, being on GolTV (which isn't going to change if you change the date), but likely wouldn't watch it if it were being played across the street from their houses. New Yorkers (who were unlikely to watch the USOC Final anyway) who want to will go to Yankee Stadium. And Europoseurs wouldn't give the USOC Final the time of day, either.
I believe the format was set to have the USOC Final played on either 8/7 or 8/8, pending the participants' preferences. With Seattle playing a league game (home to LA on ESPN2) on 8/5, I believe the reasonable decision was made to play the USOC Final on 8/8.
Meh, I'm a legitimate American soccer fan and won't be going to watch the traveling circus but watching something of importance.
George Metellus tweeted on Tuesday that he will be working with Gino Fuentes instead of Juan Arango. -- There are rumors that GOLTV USA will be bumped off the DIRECTV Sports Pack by August 17 to make room for beIN SPORT 1 USA. We'll know soon enough one way or another.
thanks for the information about the broadcast. i had checked fsc and didn't see it there, hadn't even thought of gol tv. long live gol tv! ps-only fans of rm or acm might be interested in the yankee stadium pick-up game.
What happens if the Little League World Series doesn't end in its time slot (which knowing baseball it never does)? Does the Real Madrid- Milan match go on ESPNews?
