No doubt. Joe's stock must have went up big time in Arena's eyes after those saves. The more pressure, the better the guy seems to perform.
Yeah, it may be part of the game, but for a game in which there was a dramatic lack of physicality (thanks be for that) that tackle came damned close to injury material. Goodsport's much earlier comment had a tinge of irony that just fit the present situation.
This is not the NE Board.. Its bad enough with the Landon gaga, we dont need Twellman gaga also... Albany, im sorry Donovan wont date you..
Wise up nibshits! Donovan brings in the fans. That's what's important. That really seems to stick in your craw, but that's life and that's the way the game is played.
He had that shaky start by venturing off his line, and allowing the Landon goal (who will probably yak at him for the rest of the season on that). However, he looked solid towards the end, and Arena has to give him a chance at some point. Right now for 2004, the all MLS set of keepers should be: Howard Cannon Thornton If a player is hot in MLS, as Cannon is now, Arena better be impeccable with that and give him a look. Note to the Bruce: Don't pick your cabana boys to fill the roster. pick the player best qualified to play for the Nats. Cheers!
The women of the halftime-show (except perhaps for the guitarist wearing the MetroStars jersey) =       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Should have been like Woodstock 1999, but without the hooliganism and debauchery that reeked the event. The mud, yes.
Is it just me, or does anybody else thing Marco won the hardware because the game was in DC? I thought either LD or Joe had the best chances due to their performances.
http://mlsnet.com/games/02/as0803allstar.html I will have to admit there was a bit of homerism in that. The way he got the goal was symbolic, especially since the one off Vaca symbolized the new guard of the Bolivian side (Vaca) making a pass to the old guard (Etcheverry). You can give it to Donovan for that one goal and effort in the game. Cannon allowed 2 goals in so it's a bit hard to give him the award, but take that away and focus on the saves and it's a legitimate case for MVP. No one mentions Chris Klein who could have been MVP for his two assists, including the game winner. Also Jason Kreis for the goal and assist, and remember this is one person who's been trying to get a chance with the Nats, but seems to be off when he plays for country--maybe, the Steve McMamanan (sp?) of his side--good English club player despite playing in Spain but off for the England side. Debatable yes, but with that goal why not for El Diablo? More importantly (especially after seeing Kovalenko go after Run DMB), good to see everyone going off the field unhurt, especially since this was an All-Star Game. For LA 2003, keep the format, or have a US/Canada v International Side. Cheers!
What I did find annoying was the either Rob Stone or Jack Edwards mentioned something about LD's agent, MLS officials, and BL officials meeting, and then wouldn't give details. If they don't know anything, why bring it up, because there are so many fans waiting to hear if LD is staying or going.
i agree!! after they had that little discussion, i was waiting until the end of the game to hear what the results/details were of that dinner meeting...ANYONE know?
The principals don't need to divulge what went on, unless they feel it is their best interest to announce what's going on. I'm speculating each side is checking with each other as to what they think by far. BL04 will not announce anything until Landon finishes his season here in San Jose unless there is a sense of urgency. So maybe no news is good news.
Interesting drivel in the MLS section: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=4787&perpage=15&pagenumber=1 from cpwilson 80: Ever since NSync and Christina Aguilera tried to be halftime entertainment for soccer matchs, it seems that the focus has been on that to reel them in instead of the game itself. Lucky this time, the focus was on the game and the quality of play. Who can forget J Lo (yes that J Lo) performing at halftime at the Women's World Cup Final. I can't say anything else except there was some extra entertainment going on during that... For the game in LA next year, maybe get Carson's Finest to perform? Cheers!
Seems to me that Joe does best when the pressure mounts. If he hasn't got that pressure, he hasn't got the intensity. "If he do not puke, you must rebuke."
Fair point. I think it was also one of those awards of sentiment, like when they gave John Wayne an Academy Award. However, El Diablo's performance as a soccer player has always been far better than the Duke's as an actor.
Santa Cruz tournament this weekend. Set the two VCRs. Yippee, a full day of soccer! At least I set the timer for 3 hours, but the game ends for me at 70:27. USA 1 MLS 1 Just when it was getting good. gRRRRRRRRRR
Did Jack 'n' Ty make any mention at all of our rain-delay pitch invasion?? Apparently somebody got arrested for mooning the crowd, the rest of us just ran around in the penalty box until they herded us back into the stands. I was in the La Norte section, me and my girlfriend (who I made wear a Mulrooney Quakes shirt) were the only non-DCU supporters there...I did my best to defend our honor, altho I think my presence brought on a few extra anti-San Jose chants (all in good fun of course, La Norte are great guys)! But I did get the whole section chanting "LA Sucks" and "Fvck LA" on several occasions which was cool. Alex
Re: Re: US National Team - MLS All-Stars (Saturday, 8/3) Pre-Game/In-Game/Postgame Thread [R] It was a titty bit nippley at half time
Is any one else as disgusted with ABC's coverage of the game as I am? Switching stations in the middle of the game for most of the country and taking a comercial braek and missing the second MLS goal for those west coast stations that continued to cover the game? Disgraceful! Can you see either happening in baseball, hockey, basketball? I don't think so. F$#@ the Mouse!!!
I certainly was ... as I'm watching the beginning of the first half, all of a sudden the game gets cut off by a commercial. I was like, "Noooo!!!" I HATE missing parts of a game. It was like 15 minutes before a sign on the screen said that ABC was having "technical difficulties". I'm thinking to myself... Dammit, soccer always gets screwed over! Then, when they had to switch over to ESPN late in the secong half ... I was not a happy person after that. But besides all that sh!t, I thought it was an exciting game
Speaking of which: Foxy Cleopatra's long lost sister. Thanks to Andy Mead for the pic! Reminiscent of the chicks in the Robert Palmer video "Addicted to Love/Simply Irresistable"!
I don't think all of Uncle Phil's money could get Johnny to come out of retirement for MLS All-Star Game. MLS Cup? Maybe...but not the All-Star Game.
