Just curious to see if anyone knew how much money US and Mexico soccer makes from an event like Wednesday night rivalry match. With a turnout of 70K+, you have to think that both squads made significant money. Does anyone have ballpark figures?
LA Opinion estimated 3 mil in ticket sales only, add TV rights, comercial adds, parking fees, concession stands ( I understand that beer flowed like a river at 8.50 Dlls. a cup), jersey and memorabilia sales, thats a pretty penny. Republican demagogery notwithstanding; for football lovers, doesnt seem so bad to have so many mexicans this side of the Rio Grande, I understand that some people drove a long way to see El Tri in person, If you forgive me a bit of sling and arrows, I heard that you guys seated 15 K at the HDC in your game against Sweden. US vs. Mexico is big bussiness, with US Soccer getting a good slice of the pie
Nice post overall, but c'mon jq... That was "Sweden" in name only. Look at our other friendlies for a better idea: Ecuador, Brazil, England, Japan, etc. Just like so many places throughout the world, fans will go to see better teams. Colombia in Uruguay in Montevideo the same night was like a morgue! And compared to the above-mentioned matches, Mexico is indeed a whopping commercial success. One related issue that I think ppl forget to consider is that the more that Mexicans -- no matter where they reside or what their passport -- are exposed to USMNT and MLS, the more that it benefits our nats and MLS. It becomes a lot easier to sell Red Bull tickets and promote RB games on tv now that Jozy has scored, for instance.
Hey Charlie... Mr Villagran, the futbol "analyst" from LA Opinion said that mexicans would probably fill stadiums when the USNT is playing if it werent for the memory of ******/Korea..... Is a nostalgic trip for us, which benefits both sides...cant wait for the next game.
