Pep Guardiola confirmed that Zack Steffen will start the League Cup final against Tottenham."Yeah, he is going to play the League Cup final. For sure. He made a good save and with the ball he was brilliant. Unfortunately, we could not be more clear in the final third." pic.twitter.com/ezJLMpVIGU— USMNT Only (@usmntonly) April 18, 2021
Indeed. The salient point is exactly WHEN. I'm not sure we've reached it just yet, but we'll get to see them both this summer, I'm almost positive. The situations won't be identical, but we can nevertheless compare...
This, of course, assumes that Berhalter rates Turner, which we have no indication of as far as I can recall.
We can rephrase to say................."there's no indication whatsoever that Berhalter favors Turner (or anybody else for that matter) over Steffen." We haven't had a fully combined domestic and foreign roster since the Nations League in Nov 2019. We can't be 100% sure, but as of now there's no evidence to support Turner being Berhalter's #1.
By the way, just as an aside about Steffen starting the League Cup final. Multiple USMNT keepers have won the League Cup. Kasey Keller; Leicester 1996-1997 Brad Friedel; Blackburn 2001-2002 Tim Howard; Manchester United 2005-2006 [Started in the 3 early rounds, but van der Saar started the final.] [Howard won the bigger trophy as the starter. The FA Cup in 2004.] By the way, Brad Guzan also made the League Cup final in 2009-2010 with Aston Villa.
Matt Turner For the MLS crowd, Matt Turner is better at goalkeeping than everyone else. #NERevs https://t.co/eUn9Jk9H0h pic.twitter.com/6Td2FVvBeJ— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) April 23, 2021
Zack starts and wins the final with Man City. He had one very good save but wasn't really needed beyond that.
Alex Borto signed a contract at Fulham. Damian Las, their other American keeper, was recently loaned to North Carolina FC. Goalkeeper Alex Borto has signed his first professional contract.Big congrats, Alex! 🖊️— Fulham Football Club (@FulhamFC) April 23, 2021 Also, just because it amuses me..................another picture of FCD's youth beast Julian Eyestone. He'd be a strong candidate to start for the US U17s right now. Not just 6'5"... 6'5" and athletic.Although I'm starting to think 6'5" may be an undersell. https://t.co/i7q5zGhFAZ— 3rd Degree (@3rdDegreeNet) April 26, 2021
Is Eyestone really 6'5"? If so, FCD is very bad at updating their player info--they have him listed at 5'11" and 140 lbs. Also, the kid is 15! If he's actually 6'5" at 15 years old he might well end up too tall to be worth anything. EDIT: He looks like he's 11 years old in his profile pic, too.
It's either the site hasn't been updated for a while or the kid is insane as his favorite player is Jesse Gonzalez.
6'5" is probably an underestimate. It's realy difficult to evaluate Julian Eyestone. His FCD academy team is such a powerhouse right now that he's barely tested. When he is tested, he seems to make all the saves. He's got a long way to go. And if he grows much taller, you wonder what his future is. There are some 6'7" and taller keepers out there, but not many. He does seem fairly athletic for a kid his size. On his twitter feed you can see him dunking a basketball with ease as a 14 year old. 1316573076872626176 is not a valid tweet id

He had a rough opener at Dallas. Wasn’t quick enough to the ground on their first goal (anticipating a shot in traffic) and made another mistake in being indecisive for Dallas’ second goal. Growing pains.
And also because Steve Clark is nursing an injury otherwise he wouldn't be on the gameday roster at all.
