Good Lord why was Vanney taking free kicks? I've seen better shots in a high school girls game. And why didn't Mathis take that one late in the second half, instead of going for a weak ineffective cross. Why doesn't Mathis, with that cannon of his, take all the shootable frees? At least from where a right-footed shot would be best, and let Eddie Lewis work on those lefties. Other teams know that we are incomptent on these frees and have no fear about a hard tackle just outside the box
Mathis does not take long fk's. Watch his approach to the ball a couple of steps. That is good for about 21 yards and in. Plus he has not hit one in a relatively long time even with the Metrostars. If I had to guess why that is I would say not enough time doing them in practice, and on his own time. Longer FK's require a longer approach. Usually it is better to pass, and another player tries to put it in on that second touch. For us right now that is a better way to go. Vanney has a far unacurate shot, what good is that? What's he going to do? Score on one fk every 6 yrs like Agoos did once.
