Agreed. Trying to tap the market without giving something back to the local league is just a slap in the face and another reason not to have any respect for ManU. It's ridiculous.

ridiculous? tell me what man u or any other team owes mls just for playing some games that are in the same country? just the fact that they are coming here and bringing their stars with them it would probably help spark an interest in football for some fans and that could have a positive affect on mls.

No. It will not. At all.

And no, they don't "owe" MLS anything. But it's called courtesy. You want a piece of the US market for purely financial reasons?? You want to buy our players that we spent time and money developing?? Then let's have a business relationship and show each other some courtesy.

I remember some NFL teams playing exhibition games in Ireland one time. Purely for money. There is no difference here with the ManUtd tour.

This ManUtd tour does NOTHING to help soccer to grow in the US. But then again, ManUtd PLC is a business and wants to make as much money as they can and they have that right. The only way a tour like this ends up putting money back in the the local game is if USSF stipulated that a percentage of profits from these games goes to the USSF or else the game would not be sanctioned.

But I'm sure Championsworld and ManUtd would not agree to that.

It's colonialism. Sell your product to the colonies.
Let the natives put money in your bank.

Read Kipling. How's it feel to be a Fuzzy-Wuzzy?

    (Fuzzy-Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy, was he?)

You can be like the Clash and play several shows in one small venue so everyone can see well, demand only small local bands open up so they can get exposure, keep ticket prices low, and then sneak kids in the back door once the show is sold out. Or...you can be someone like the Rolling Stones and charge $80 for a 1000th row seat and $50 for a t-shirt, and have no opening bands at all (despite the price), and allow the parking lot to charge $10 a car, etc, etc, etc.

One big diff. The NFL played over there as a novelty; there is no professional league of American football in Ireland, and no NFL Europe side in Dublin or any where else in Ireland.

There are professional Assoc. Football leagues in the US -- including MLS, regarded as the 'top flight.'

The NFL wasn't slighting an Irish American Football League by not playing the Dublin Dublets were they? There is the difference.

I remember a similar game at Azteca between the Dallas Cowboys and Huston Oilers. A boring tractor pull that just plowed up the pitch something fierce.
I think it was a damp field from recent rains.

What an ad for the NFL that was!

Wasn't there supposed to be a MLB game in Japan this spring? - got cancelled because of Iraq, iirc.

And funny how this has turned into a bash Man Utd thread. Are they playing against their reserves whilst over here?

Supposedly the contract for the tour insisted on a first team.

Actually there is, since American football is not played in Ireland. We have a league. Man Yoo et all should recognize that. That isn't too much to ask is it?

Some US Fans ARE VERY Bothered at Missing Becks

The original post was "US Fans not Bothered at Missing Becks."

Now, while I would agree it's a shame that Man U isn't facing any MLS sides, I am most definitely bothered about missing Beckham.

I spent just under $300 on 2 good seats for Man Utd vs. Juventus with the understanding that Beckham WOULD BE ON THE TEAM! And, I'm a starving college student! ARE YOU LISTENING MANCHESTER UNITED?!

Probably not on BigSoccer. Your $300 or Madrid's $35 million?

OK Kipling is off topic but it's a silly topic that nobody stuck to anyway

I don't think this has turned into a bash ManU thread, per se, but there is a lot of support for MLS here. We are bashing the concept of travelling road shows that ignore the home league. At least one match with an MLS team would have shown some respect for our efforts here -- and would not have hurt the till a farthing, I'd wager. (Especially since we don't trade in farthings here.)

ManU is like the Yankees, GM, Microsoft: people either love them or hate them. Not much middle ground out there.

I could care less about Man U. How would they ever explain it back home if they lost to an MLS team?

Yeah, you're right. I shudder to think what the tabloids would print if Man Utd lost a friendly. I'd be front page news no doubt.
