    US Defense vs. Turkey [r]

As much as I HATE watching us lose I'm glad something like this happened: We were horribly exposed defensively. Bruce has stated that defense is our weakness and it showed today. Call it an educational loss if you will, because this problem needs to be addressed. Turkey made some brilliant runs and they drew our center backs horribbly out of position, see: 2nd goal. This is how we'll learn.

We aren't going to be able to fix this problem tactically unless we play in games and get this type of experience. It's one thing for Bruce to say "hey Califf, if Berhalter follows his man checking back to the ball, you have to stay home in the center of the defense" or "Hejduk, when the ball is on the opposite side of the field, pinch in dammitt," but it is different (and more useful) for us to get punished for not knowing how to defend. Boca was on the bench and I hope Arena was in his ear the whole game saying "One central defender has to stay at home no matter what kind of runs the strikers are making." I'm anxious to see how we resond.

And much credit to Turkey's off the ball movement. Our backline and center mids had no idea how to defend them. Let's not forget that we are in this tournament to get these hard knocks and remember them.

Also, our anemic offensive output can be attributed to the back line as well. When you spend an entire game on your heels, it is tough to mount an attack.

Oh yeah, if people think that Turkey's fans were tough, oh baby wait 'till CONCACAF Qualifying.
