One good thing I can tell you is that he played behind Chilavert for one year, so that must've helped him. He's getting up there in age, but with goalies, 30 is a perfect age. Let me ask in the Penarol message board and I'll get back to you

Solamente hablo un poquito en español, so I'll ask my question in English instead.

I'm planning a trip to Montevideo in May and would like to see a game at the Estadio Centenario, or at least take a tour of the historic ground where the first World Cup final was played, if that's possible. Does anyone know when they will announce the match schedule/fixture list? I'd like to start making my reservations.

    Gracias por su asistencia.

Not yet. We still don't know the exact date the next tournament will start in, so its impossible to know. Also, a year or two ago, the tournament was postponed for a few weeks in the middle of the season because of political problems between the teams. You would be catching the tailend of the season which could be a lot of fun. Since you're planning on visiting Estadio Centenario, you would be watching Peñarol play as we're the only team that plays pretty much every game there. I will let you know if I can find any information. You might even catch "El Clasico" if you're lucky. And yes, tours are available. There's also a museum you can visit. Keep checking this thread and I'll update you

Cool! Thanks very much for your help. Any idea when they'll make the announcement?

One other question: Can you point me to any good resources online about Uruguayan fútbol, either club teams and the Selección? (Preferably in English.) I'm kind of adopting Uruguay as my second team for the World Cup.

On TyC Sports they're showing Nacional-Peñarol on that friendly tournament of Montevideo on Friday, however how do you uruguayans rate that kind of friendly matches?

In my opinion they are okay, but they're more or less a glorified waste of time in the sense that for an unofficial match it may not ease things for teams, since regardless of it being a friendly it's still a classic.

We should know within the next week. Let me know which week of May you would be in Montevideo.

I doubt there's any english resources on Uruguayan soccer, but a good spanish site you could "google translate" is www.ovaciondigital.com.uy That's all sports, but mostly only soccer. Another one I use is www.tenfieldigital.com.uy

Peñarol, we have a forum at www.redmanya.com/foro and you can post in english and people will be very friendly to you. Just make a post in "Presentaciones" saying your from the States, and mostly everyone would love that other than some jackasses.

This Friday at 4PM California Time, GolTV will be broadcasting El Clasico.

I don't like these tournaments, because in the last 2 or 3 years, nacioMAL has won all of them. It is not a waste of time, we take it VERY SERIOUSLY. Last year, our head coach "resigned" because of losing this match(I think he was forced to resign even though we loved him).

Starters play in this game(other than 2 years ago when our coach but in the youth players and got fired). It's a full crowd, with some new sizzle as its the only night clasico which means lots of fireworks and other picoternia.

This one will not be the funnest to watch as a Penarol fan as we're almost completely repeating the same starting lineup with which we got dominated last time.

    Thanks for the info (again).

I've got some flexibility with my schedule, so I could either be in Montevideo on the weekend of May 15-16 or May 22-23. I'm really starting to look forward to this -- Uruguay has so much footballing talent in proportion to its population, it's quite amazing.

I'll set up the DVR to record El Clasico.

I'll let you know when the official schedule(subject to change like I warned you) comes out.

Last year, El Clasico was played on May 24th because of the suspension of the tournament.

Depending on when you arrive, you would either be watching El Clasico, Peñarol vs Danubio(awesome game), or Peñarol vs Atenas(Atenas is a mediocre team). Maybe you could catch a couple other good games as well. Peñarol is the one that play at El Centenario. Maybe you will even catch a National Team friendly.

I also recommend Punta del Este if you have time, even though it will be cold.

Any of those games would be great -- Peñarol/Danubio would be fun in particular because I had great luck with some Danubio players in a Football Manager 2008 game once. But either way, it will be great just to be there.

Thanks for the tip. Would you recommend Punta del Este over Colonia? I'll be flying in and out of Buenos Aires, so it might be hard to get there in any case.

El Clausura will oficially be starting on January 23rd. There's really no way to know what game you will get as sometimes, out of nowhere, they choose to play games in the middle of the week which ********s everything up. And this year, they're in a very tight schedule with the World Cup. This could mean that if you get VERY lucky, you might even be able to watch the Finals(Clausura vs Apertura Champion). I just can't tell you right now. Just send me a PM as we get closer to the date. Danubio also has Recoba this year. Will be fun to watch how his situation develops.

As for Punta del Este over Colonia, I would say yea. I've only gone to Colonia once or twice, and that was a complete bore. Its more of a historic place. Old buildings, etc.

Punta del Este is best during the summer as the beaches are gorgeous, and its the place to be seen in South America, but in the winter there is still a lot to do and it would be more fun in my opinion.

Looking forward to El Clasico tonight as well.

Sounds like I have a pretty good chance of seeing a match in any case, and if I'm really lucky I could see the Finals. I wonder if there's any chance of an international friendly happening?

Thanks for your help and tips. I'll definitely be in touch when we get closer to May.
