Some of these cards are being advertised on eBay and elsewhere as "run of 50", "run of 20", and "run of 15." Does this really mean that Upper Deck is only issuing that tiny number of these cards? Or am I reading this completely wrong???
Happy to see that after a several year hiatus, Upper Deck is making MLS cards again this year. Typically most card sets in all sports consist of a "base set" as well as what are called "insert sets". The base set consists of a selection of many players from all over the league while the insert sets are usually much smaller in number, but are also somewhat rarer and more difficult to obtain. For example, if there are 5 cards in a pack, 3/4 of the packs will have 5 cards from the base set, while 1/4 of the packs might have 4 cards from the base set and 1 card from one of the insert sets. Quite often, some insert sets are much rarer than other insert sets. The idea is that is someone desires to have a complete set including all of the different insert sets, they have to buy a LOT of trading cards (including a ton of the less expensive "common" cards.) It's so bad in some sports card sets that some people open a pack of cards, keep any insert cards they find (if any) and throw or give away the base set cards. From the desciptions on Ebay, it looks like the 2004 MLS cards appear to consist of a base set of 90, and several different insert sets. Right now there are a few listings for various sets on ebay, and some of the insert sets are many times as expensive as the base set.

Is it true that some of the insert cards were only manufactured in quantities of 15, 20, and 50?
my grandson and i have got into collecting these now. is there someplace online where you can trade cards with other folks? would it be possible to start a thread here where people list what they have up for trade, then both parties can arrange the deal through PMs?
I would be interested in trading cards as well. For instance, I have two Pat Noonan jersey cards. I only need one. I have a few duplicates from the MLS Cup Challenger series as well as from the MLS Stars series. Perhaps we should start an MLS Upper Deck Trading thread in the Collectors and Collectables forum. I will do that when I get home tonight and I take inventory of my card collection.
I ordered a box from here for $59.99. You can also buy packs of 5 cards at comic stores and at your local MLS stadium (e.g. HDC).
Here is the Upper Deck page that discusses these cards. http://www.upperdeck.com/collection/newreleases.aspx?sid=6 This should help you determine set size etc. you can print out a checklist to help collect a complete set.
Didn't see the card trading on the link but thanks for the links to better card sites. I keep getting Twellman cards but at least they aren't dups. So far my dups are: #30 Quill #59 Kirovski #65 Guevara I'm looking for Galaxy stuff - especially Gato. Maybe willing to switch cards with someone (i.e., an autographed Kirovski for an autographed Twellman). After my trip to SJ, I plan on buying one of those boxes (if I have any money left). You can e-mail me at lpickle@ci.santa-ana.ca.us
i found the 2004 mls cards at Target for $2.99 that is the only place i found them: no walmart, kmart, or any comic stores
