The much bigger name abomination are parents who name their kids with the same 1st letter. Roger Clemens had many Ks as a pitcher. So what did he do? Roger Clemens has four sons with his wife, Debra Lynn Godfrey: Koby, Kory, Kacy, and Kody. All four names begin with the letter "K," a tribute to the baseball notation for a strikeout. Athletes & rich people are one thing. But I've seen Normals also do it.
More, I’m being frivolous. I mean, this IS the unpopular opinions thread. And apparently this thing that bugs me is unpopular. I knew kids who were Juniors growing up, and none of their dads or themselves were called Senior or Junior.
Then, for one example, you never had to answer a landline and try to figure out who they were calling. Of course, here's one of the more famous Juniors:
My mother's initials were ABC. My brother's initials are ABC. His daughter's initials were ABC until she got married. And my son decided his daughter should also be ABC. Tradition! (Also, my first name starts with B and, had there been any additional kids, they would have been C and D. My brother also did this; his second child's name starts with B. I have not done any of this nonsense.)
I am going add to this. When using John Doe III and you start going that route, then for god sakes call it a day at II, or III. you step into IV +. Territory, you’re getting into medieval royalty stuff. Creepy IMO
I went to college with a guy who was a "V". This guy hadn't accomplished much on his own, but you would definitely recognize his name - "I" especially, "II" and "III" were only known because of "I"'s fame (and fortune), but "IV" - the dad of the guy I was at college with - was a US Senator within our lifetimes. Wikipedia says the guy our age has a son who is "VI". (in this case "went to college with" means we were in the same graduating class, not that I knew him personally.)
Used to have some neighbors—the Jones family—who named their kid Indiana. He was a classmate of my son. Kid ALWAYS went by his middle name. I don’t think he was amused.
Some parents have a weird sense of humor. We have the Dutch soccer player for Go Ahead Eagles with the familyname James. His parents named him Dean.
I find it weird certain American families appropriate the European royal families custom to rank offspring by a number. Is it an effort to fake a "noble" lineage?
I find it weird too. Stranger still is when you see people living in New York or Minnesota flying a Confederate flag. We’re a weird ********ing country, what can I say?
I worked with a kid when I was in my late 20’s back in NYC. Parents named him Preston Death. he must have a hard time explaining that to women in bars, or at parties
I don't see them as supporting a region so much as supporting the power relationship between Whites and POCs that existed during the era of slavery.
Meh, there are a lot of stupid things about the English language and its naming conventions, but I don't see this as one of them.
Two things on that: 1. Was that the wife who supposedly kept the roids in her gym bag? 2. I thought that was more of a white trash, and/or southern thing, no? (I envision 10 kids roaming in and around a double-wide in Virginia, all with the same 1st letter names.)
Well, he was from Texasistan, which is from the confederacy. Which tracks my theory. Got any examples from some WASP-y types up north?
In the Northeast it's lacrosse names. Which are more Southern sounding with last names used as 1st names. 2017 was a banner year: Men’s FIRST TEAM A – Shackleford Stanwick, Jr., Johns Hopkins A – Keyveat Postell, Fr. Penn A – Bear Altemus, Sr., Princeton M – IV Stucker, Jr., Roanoke M – Brickman House, Sr., Utica M – Griffin Woodfinlevine, Sr., Montclair State D – Sky Dupree, Fr., North Greenville D – Coy Broderick, So., Hanover D – Braylen Sampson, Jr., Byrant G – Fitzhugh Lee, So., Air Force SECOND TEAM A – Tate Beason, Sr., Florida Tech A – Blaine Stottlar, Sr., Lees-McRae A – Robbie Betchley III, Sr., Furman M – Brewster Warble, Fr., Brown M – Broderick Vitalie, So., Holy Cross M – Holden Rosen Grupp, Jr., Tufts D – Alistair Berven, Sr., Princeton D – Rich Mix, Jr., Benedictine D – Stone Sims, Jr., Albany https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/2017-lacrosse-all-name-team/48030
Huh, I would have thought the southern, white trashy sounding names would have included at least one "Mason," "Cooper," or "Baker."
Names are just names. I know plenty of Black folks with the names you mention, so an integrated concept. Now, prep culture? Yeah, different. Remember Ryan O'Neal's Oliver Barrett IV role? It stems originally from schools in the Northeast, like LAX, crew, hockey, fencing, badminton, etc. Remember Reade Seligmann from Duke LAX? He's not from Durham. He's from Essex Falls, New Joisey.
