This was reported about 3 months ago. It became official this morning: http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.c...on-an-english-language-channel-for-hispanics/ "UnivisionABC News 24/7" will originate from Miami (non-union) and will be in English, using Hispanic talent. == Not a surprise to see Univision getting into English-language pay TV, as growth of Spanish-language TV in the U.S. has slowed in the past 3 years. One cannot rely on immigration to support TV channels forever, especially in a down economy. The likes of Univision was having trouble connecting with 2nd and 3rd generation Hispanics. Let's see how Univision will be involved with the bidding for the U.S. rights to the English Premier League in 2013-2016 this summer. I just can't see Univision sitting out this one without getting involved in some way.
Pay attention to this new "UnivisionABC News 24/7" channel. (Don't know yet the exact name, but Univision is using "24/7" to brand its Spanish-language news channel so one should not be surprised to see similar branding on its English-language news channel.) You might be watching the Mexico vs USA World Cup Qualifying match from Estadio Azteca during the 2nd half of 2013 on this new English-language channel in "free preview" mode as part of a "marketing event".
Speaking of which...have you guys heard about that "Mundo Fox" channel about to be launched? What do we know about it? Any footy to be expected? Huhe: what's the scoop??
Mundo FOX (U.S.A.) will be loaded with Colombian telenovelas from RCN. It will be a relatively "small" operation to start. No Mexican futbol on Mundo FOX (U.S.A.) unless FOX were to attempt to outbid Telemundo (Comcast) for the U.S. rights to Chivas Guadalajara home games for the 2013-2018 contract cycle. One should expect Jorge Vergara to ask for no less than $100 million/year for the rights, up from the reported $50 million/year during the current (2008-2013) contract cycle. RCN is keeping Futbol Colombiano on its TV Colombia (U.S.A.) pay TV channel, which now airs 5 matches each weekend.
But not in HD. I am not sure why Univision and Fox are launching channels in SD only. FPC on TV Colombia is mediocre at best, at least on Goltv it was in HD.
Mundo FOX is supposed to be free-to-air. Good luck in finding an affiliate in your area. A Spanish-language TV network with Colombian telenovelas is NOT an easy sell because the established competitors will have Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Peruvian, and Brazilian content. The .2 or .3 subchannels of MyNetworkTV affiliates would be one possibility especially those that are owned by NewsCorp.
Univision and Disney are getting cozier and cozier. And I didn't realize ABC already has a digital 24 Hour News/Lifestyle channel.
ABC has a 24-hour news channel (ABC News Now) and a 24-hour lifestyle channel (Live Well TV). The new channel will be operated by Univision from Miami, using Hispanic on-camera talent.
