VAR also did not notify him. The ref had problems with his communication device so I'm not sure if they are also at fault.
I'm not discounting New Zealand or Guinea but we need to beat them handily to get past this result. 3-0 puts us in quite the hole. Especially if France takes their foot off the pedal in the third game knowing they have advanced.
I think the obvious answer is Celentano, who is a much better shot stopper than Schulte. It’s hard not to feel like up to the 60’ was heavily influenced by luck and stopping one or both goals and finishing the Tolkin chance makes this a much different game.
Their goals weren't really scored when we were bunkering though. Really think our MFs failed stopping danger right at the top of the box for their first two goals. We really should have scored 1 or 2 as well.
closest 3-0 loss maybe ive ever seen 1 french goal was off a french foul 1 us goal was called offside but seemed fine even just a 2-1 loss would be so different right now 1 point blank header from the us off the post.....how did tolkin not score that?!?!??!!??? the one area where this french team outclasses the usa is with the ball in counter attacking situations....they are lethal still every single french goal was scored right down the middle basically you would EXPECT the chemistry of zimmerman and robinson....and tessman and busio.....to be stronger there! im not really seeing the benefit of the zimmerman miles pairing....... i think tessman is the type of player who will always be better for club than country.....i think he has a very high ceiling for club and not that high for country....he is a system player that needs to know where he has space and where he doesnt and where his teammates are etc.....wont have that with national teams, most likely....but will with clubs if you arent getting a strong middle from zimm miles busio tessman.....then you have serious problems and this team is doomed, imo if you cannot get crosses to mcguire hes useless......too many players for the us are too poor in possession but still it was curious how the usmnt came to life after france got 1-0...they were very unlucky not to score.....to make it 1-1 idk france is very good on counters.....so an open game is always a risk......but this game was there for the taking, still i still think the us couldve won this game....and I wouldnt be scared of a rematch in the knockouts if it happens what would scare me is the refs..... it was eerily reminscent of the copa......the french were overly physical.....unnecessarily roughing the us players at every single opportunity...with impunity...no cards and at key moments.....on 2 of the goals...the ref conveniently sided with the french...... seems to me the coach didnt go with his stringest 11 to start...to have some firepower off the bench....not sure what the best lineup is.....but the overagers dont seem like assets i want to see more ore booth and yow....they need to play....aaronson is also a must start seeing a forward out there that needs crosses but never gets them has me hating the berhalter influence on this team....im assuming he had a lot of input on what we're seeing....mitrovic did say he talked to gregg every day.....smmfh
We had guys get into great positions to score but didn't. They didn't really get guys in good positions to score but did. Too many errant passes from guys who play professionally. The Eurosport announcers thought Tessmann was the best American in the first half but I was underwhelmed by his play overall. His lack of technical ability at times made me long for the days of Michael Bradley. Finally, WTF with VAR? I was watching on Eurosport and didn't get a great replay, but it looked like they pushed off on one of their goals and a defender kept us onside for the one we had called off.
We've got Schulte, Brady, Gaga, and Kochen (as long as we lock him). You don't write off a keeper for a ---- game. You do write them off for oodles of ---- games.
Yeah, but Henry got an incredibly flattering 3-0 scoreline, which I find far more concerning as related to the USMNT manager search.
Another US team that's inept in the final 3rd and weak in their one versus one defending. Another US team that's weak on the ball and yells for fouls that they're not going to get. Another US team whose goalkeeper is a net negative, a situation that you can't have if you're going to upset a group favorite. Another US team whose set pieces are largely useless. Another US team that doesn't realize it's a 90 minute game. Another US team that doesn't know how to handle goal difference in their first group game. The difference in the overage attacking players was stark. How the Hell do you hit a sitter header off the post? I didn't expect much from Maguire at the # 9 and that's exactly what I got… Anyone know why we didn't get a VAR review on the goal that was called back? Are they using the lines or the computer review? Must win next game, otherwise they might as well spend the rest of the time sightseeing the Eiffel Tower or something…
Schulte is very solid, but his agility is questionable. Gaga would have stopped at least one of long distance shots, but would have made mistakes. Brady would have stopped both, and would have made even more mistakes.
Soccer is such a game of moments. We played them well for an hour but then they get a goal on a decent enough shot that Shulte probably should have saved. Then we miss our chance to get back into it and are left having to push forward against a stronger, faster more skillful team and now we're in a hole due to a poor goal difference as they took advantage of our having to come out of our shell. It doesn't matter if you play well for the majority of the game if you can't make the most of your moments and the other team can.
[QUOTE="Lloyd Heilbrunn, post: 42414707, member: 19864" Anyone know why we didn't get a VAR review on the goal that was called back? Are they using the lines or the computer review? [/QUOTE] How do you know there wasn't a VAR review? He looked offside from the camera angle.
#1 Seems a bit harsh. They had some chances, but only .77 or so of xG. #2 I saw multiple calls that were ridiculous, multiple non-calls in particular. No VAR on our goal, foul in lead up to their third not called, and foul on their 3rd not called. It's one thing to be refs for help on 50/50 calls, this, much like the Copa, was a match drenched in crap conmebol reffing. #3 I agree Schulte sucked, but I also think Schulte's got a long cv that's interesting, and I don't think we should decide Schulte sucked because he crapped his pants at France against France in their olympic opener. I don't know if I'd start him after that, but I also don't think we should throw him in the failure bin w/Steffen, Turner and the rest. #4 I saw some good ones. #5 That's a shrug emoji for me. #6 90 min thing is a point. They should have been tightening up late and did not. #7 Well, it was always gonna be awful, but the fact that we got no one released that we wanted, NOBODY, and they got elite guys released? That's on the club teams involved not releasing our guys. For whatever reason France had pull, and we had none. #8. Because its what we do, in the friendly in March we blew multiple early chances too . #9 Agreed which was why going w/him alone was a problem, and not getting Vasquez or Pepi released was a disaster.
